@JohnBartholomewChess, if you can and will, please don't take so long between standard games, I bet a lot of people think like me. They are the most instructive videos, because you have the ability to translate your chess reasoning into words, it even makes it look easy, you have a gift for teaching and it shows the most and best through the standard videos.
CIA agent #1: Ok, how do we plan to break the prisoner? Waterboarding? CIA agent #2: No, no, we have something much more effective. CIA agent #1: Really? What is it? CIA agent #2: Making them watch a Bartholomew game where he's way behind on the clock in a totally winning position....
Whenever I’m feeling anxious or not confident about my chess, I pop in a JB Standard video. Not only does it get me pumped to play chess again, it reminds me of how I need to approach it, and makes me feel like I can do what John does. Not at his level, of course! 😅
John said, “I tend to over-explain and under-execute in terms of time in my games. But at least you guys get to come along with me when I do that.” This is what makes John the most helpful chess video maker in my estimation!! There are a lot of chess videos where masters blow through moves that aren’t obvious to a 1200 player. To the master, they’re instinctual. Unfortunately I don’t learn the reasoning behind moves when they’re just played on intuition with no rationale provided in the video. John’s videos help me learn so much because I get to see and hear his thought process, from selecting moves in the opening based on the opponent’s move order, to finding the right way to liquidate to an advantageous endgame. John, what you call “over-explaining” may not be the most optimal thing for your rating, but it’s definitely gold for learning players like me. Please don’t stop! ❤ Thanks for the video. This standard series and climbing the rating latter have been my favorites for this very reason: getting lots of John’s reasoning and explaining!
Good to see you back, John. So many series inspired by your videos these days, but to this day only Danya goes into the level of detail with the ease of understanding that you provide. Climbing the Rating Ladder gained me so many points a few years ago. Looking forward to more!
Much appreciated! Danya and his speedruns are awesome - I'm glad he's been producing content in the same vein. Cheers, and continued best wishes for your chess improvement!
John, I write to reinforce what others have noted. You are the best at teaching chess, and the “standard” time control format helps me the most. My wife has never learned chess at all, but she well knows both your name and my opinion of your work.
HNY John! Don't forget your good resolutions for the new year and bring more standard videos please! As I see in the comments many people would appreciate this, too.
Pumped to see a standard play video. I've been playing a lot more 15|10 games since you recommended it and have seen my play improve dramatically, including in subsequent blitz games. Although I was getting stressed at the amount of time you were giving your opponent here!! 😂
Love it, you're setting yourself up well by playing longer games online. Not many people commit to this, but it's absolutely the right way to approach improvement.
50:05 I was waiting for the realization lol, it’s a rare moment that I see a tactic John missed, so much so that I paused to double check with Stockfish to make sure I wasn’t the one hallucinating! Regardless, great video John, always love to see the longer RUclips content and hope to see more in the near future!
@@JohnBartholomewChess 10:28 "don't see a huge benefit there"; the rook hanging : 😶🌫 But as you said, the game wouldn't have been as interresting. Great video, looking forward to see more
Yes!! I l absolutely love your standard videos. I’ve learned more about chess from this series than any other single resource out there. Thank you so much for making these!
Don't worry John, I discounted the 13...d5 move but for a different reason. It's not a true fork because the e6 pawn is pinned by White's Queen, so I saw White going 14. Bxd5 Qxd5 15. Qxd5 exd5 16. Bxc3 and Black's actually down a pawn. But of course there's the intermezzo 14...Bxd2+ in that line, and Black still ends up ahead. Sometimes there's just too many options to be confident in a tactic during a rapid game!
Appreciate it! I've been keeping busy teaching the past couple years as well as going through some life changes, but I'm happy to continue creating content here on RUclips. Honestly energizes me to see how many people learn from the content 👍
Hey, John! Great to see you back on RUclips. I haven't been able to catch your streams for a long time. Life has gotten a little busy. So RUclips content is greatly appreciated. Happy New Year!
39:00 Wonderful tactics., If King goes to 7th rank, White plays Ra8 and wins. Threat is h8 queen and if tak on h7 then Ra7 will skewer rook. Turned up in one of my games
I really loved this video. This format was informative and entertaining, and highlights your natural talent as a presenter. Many thanks for taking the time and effort to post on you tube. Your videos are still the best.
If it makes you feel any better John, I too was lulled in by your reasoning and distracted from Ba1 taking the Rook! 49:34 (Love these "Standard" videos, especially when I was first getting into chess. Great to hear you have plans of doing even more!)
Great to have the opportunity to watch you play in VOD when missing your stream. Great game as well. I saw Bb7 but wasn't sure it works until the analysis.
John please make more of these, I think I’ve literally watched your entire standard playlist, watching those videos in my early days took me from 5-600 to 1200 just from watching the videos themselves. Now I am around 1450 rapid rating .
I was screaming d5 but i think the oversight was kf8 after bb5 check. John kept saying Bd7 after bb5 check there. Oh well its good to know he's human like the rest of us :). Very instructive game!

Glad to see another standard video. I'm not sure how much impact the (very good) advice to play long games will have when the example set by you and the majority of streamers is to play blitz or bullet most of the time.
Yes, it's tough to get the message across! Even as a titled player, I have to constantly remind myself that even rapid games online are *very* fast compared to "conventional" long-time control games that many strong players were reared on.

I miss the old bullet arena tourneys. There was one on Halloween. I remember everyone had to start from some weird position, and jon just wrecked everyone.
from memory they multiple the increment by 40, so 15 + (15 * 40 / 60) = 25, and it looks like 25 is the lowest classical time. I do like this series where you have time to think out load.
Thanks to those who stick around for the analysis, too! 😀
The BEST part :D
I’m watching in parts over a few days 👌🏻

It was worth it.
The d5 completely skipped my mind as well, but It's so obvious in hindsight.
incredibly instructive. you seem to be the only person out there playing slow games at their own level and explaining their thought process. thank you

Ahhh!!!! Missed this series so badly!! Getting this level of chess has been so helpful in learning. Thank you so much!!
Love to hear it! Thanks for watching.

One of my favorite RUclips series of all time, good to have you back
Thank you John for all of the educational videos, you helped me develop my chess game
I love your standard chess videos. Super comfy and I can easily follow along with your clear explanations. Thank you!

So glad to see this video, John. You're a hard habit to break. Hope this continues and grows!

10:08 - D5 would've been great because then we're attacking the queen and the rook at the same time
So good to have you back, John! Hope to see more of you on YT this year!

finally! I've been waiting for the standard series for so long

Thanks for making a standard time control video, I love this series
Excellent, really like your standard videos, happy to see one again
So great to have this series back, thanks for reviving it!
You give me heart attacks with the time management lol, 40 seconds left and you’re giving a PhD thesis.
That’s why you’re the best chesstuber.
With the 15sec increment and a premove recapture he gets 30 seconds right away, but yeah it does seem kinda wire. I was watching the clock as well
😂
the clock is a resource, if you don't win with nothing left, you didn't use it optimally, right? 😅
gotta mine the clock, like bitcoin
@@the0cool0guy Don't understand how that works, but okay
Hey John, love to see some more games in the standard series, really helpful to see your analysis especially as I get into more classical chess.

Nice - way to get over that hump! Sounds like switching to slightly longer time controls helped you take control of your improvement.
