The I7C sets are very comfortable and they accelerate just as fast as what they replaced due to the formation length.

I've been to Inverness twice in my life, both times by train. The first time I left Inverness on the direct train to Kings Cross (a HST at that time) - and one of Britain's longest single train journeys - which was very impressive. The second time was a single day return on Class 158s which I enjoyed immensely. Both trips were more than 20 years ago...I need to do this again!

Be grateful to my 3x great uncle, William Roberts[on], Engineer in Chief of the Highland Railway who doubled sections of the line between Perth and Inverness. British Rail removed them, but they were later reinstated. He also designed the stations at Pitlochry (Down platform), Newtonmore (demolished), Kingussie, Boat of Garten and the station and 4-bay engine shed at Aviemore. Both of the latter are now listed buildings. You would have got great views of the Culloden Viaduct from the other side of the train.

This is meant to be a mainline. Much of it is single track, it's slow, prone to delays, and none of it is electrified.
If anyone wants to know what's wrong with British infrastructure...

I just did a trip on the Class 170 from Edinburgh to Inverness, although mine took me through Falkirk and Stirling instead of crossing the Firth of Forth. But still- this is one of the most scenic train journeys anywhere in the world.
Overall I liked the Class 170's, as the ride was fairly quiet and comfortable however I found that the luggage racks (both overhead and standing ones for larger bags) were severely undersized for long distance use. Larger and better baggage storage options and better tray tables are fairly simple fixes but they would drastically improve the trains in my opinion.

I was fortunate to be able to sit in a first class seat, because when some of these units were transferred to EMR, first class was declassified. It was my first time in a first class seat and was very comfortable. Sadly, they'll be refurbished soon and have first class completely removed, so I won't be able to do that trick forever.

I'm actually going up to inverness on Monday. However going up I booked on the LNER service that's runs through Stirling and Dunblane. I'm going thatcway because living 8n Fife and know the Fife lines well and wanted to try a different route. Also, I managed to get first class for £30. That's using my railcard though. Coming back it will be Scotrail through Fife. I'm hoping it will be oef the intercity 7s. If it is, I'll let you know what it's like. The reason I go from Edinburgh rather than Fife even though I live there is the bus I get from the Waverley to my home is more direct and quicker than any of the buses from Fife station's.

Could ScotRail inherit the Class 170s from Transport for Wales or does ScotRail have enough Class 170s to operate in the North of Scotland. As some of the Ex-ScotRail Class 170s have been cascaded to Northern.

ScotRail are looking to electrify more lines around the Central Belt, which will allow them to cascade the trains and replace the 156s in due course. Although I'm not sure that 170s are certified to run on all of their routes in the far north, so it may be a while yet.
