    Bringing quality and cunstomer managers into the field to fit a door is genius marketing work for Todco, shows everyone who buys and installs the doors that the guys on the end of the emails and the phones know EXACTLY what issues you may be having, what parts might solve your issues, and that they speak your language. It's also really cool that they chose to make it historically accurate for you, showing they can support any overhead door anywhere. Really really massive and lovely gesture by them, and shows they're a great group of folks.

    40 year career on the road so I'm intimately familiar with TODCO products and have to say a big thank you to a class act bunch of guys. Age of the guys pretty much confirmed my initial suspicion when it was revealed that management was coming out to install the donated doors they were of an age to be the wide eyed crumb crunchers watching Knight Rider and jumped at the chance sort of like if I'd have been offered ( and going to show my age here) a chance to help in restoration work on Black Beauty or the Batmobile.

    This door, to me, seems to be THE key factor in maintaining a weather-tight seal when the inside will be made to look like the studio set, making this trailer a real-life version of what they only dreamed of during the filming of Knight Rider. Without this door, its questionable that this entire project, interior-wise, could even be done and made to last. The ramp door alone, to make it look exactly like it did on the show, probably wouldn't be good enough without serious modification. This rollup door makes our tv show a reality. So awesome.

    One door closes. Another one opens! What a great gesture from TODCO! Only a slight compromise concerning the necessary modification on the brackets to facilitate the functioning of the roll up door. This door was in situ during the Knight Rider era but, though never used in the show after and due the studio adaptations. The re instated brackets are still there but you now have the option to use the inner door giving extra security. Its amazing what you have achieved on this project so far in regards to research, finding the original truck tractor and trailer and sourcing exact replicas of other items to re instate and restore the semi to its 1980s Knight Rider era appearance. Ma'vellous! as Mr Miles would put it!

  • @bigtrucker26
    @bigtrucker26 Год назад

    It's great that Todco donated a door and installation!
    I am noticing one difficulty, or complication in using both doors. That is that the cables necessary for lifting the top-out reaching end of the ramp door will have to be run through the roll up door, and you will not be able to lock the roll up door and operate the ramp door. If you close and lock the ramp you could roll down the roll up but not lock it.
    In order to use both effectively you would have to re-engineer the cables to run above the roll up door, and pass through the door header; or, somehow pass through the walls to go around the roll up door tracks... either of which invalidates the original cabling/bracketing designs at the back of the trailer.
    If you install a second roll up door latch and catch on the inside of the door, then you could theoretically lock the ramp door shut, then pull out the cables with enough slack to shut the roll up door, or put quick releases on the ends of the cables at the door to disconnect them.
    I guess the question becomes, how faithful, as the custodian/restomodder, do you wish to be to the screen used designs?
    I'm not taking a stance on this particular question, as I see it both ways.

      @@CK01989 Exactly what I was thinking.

    • @Mainyehc
      @Mainyehc Год назад

      @@CK01989maybe the cables can be disconnected at one of the ends or have sort of a split with quick-release and engage hardware for safe storage, or something; don’t forget the ramp, once lifted, can actually be held up by the locking bolt/pin thing, and when the semi is parked, it may very well be strong enough to stay put and hold the ramp’s weight on its own. While driving, it should obviously be held by the cables as well, as yet another redundancy, just like during the show; also, as long as the team is careful enough about checking forecasts, weather-proofing is not as important in that comparatively rare scenario.
      Also, in the unlikely and sad event that KITT dislodged itself inside of the semi while on the road, the wooden roll-up door wouldn’t provide much in the way of impact dampening and just be ruined in the process, whereas the ramp, with those redundancies (five points - i.e. the two cables, the locking pin and the two pivot points, if indeed there’s gonna be just two of those - should be enough), would definitely hold it inside on its own.
      Since there’s already this precedent of not keeping the semi 100% accurate (by definition, as it never even included the lounge area in the first place) and the new parts are all as bespoke as the ones designed to Universal’s specs, don’t underestimate Joe and the team’s ability to come up with a solution even better and more versatile than the one in the screen used design.
