This song doesn’t make me want to fall into bed and close my eyes, as it does our host. It makes me want to cry, because it is such a deeply felt declaration of love without embellishment. The melody is sublime and gently articulated, as if he is lying by your side and almost whispering. The lyric evokes someone we’d all be in love with. But what ultimately immortalizes this classic pop ballad, in the end, is Lightfoot’s voice. You can tell the audience is hypnotized by it. As a singer’s voice, Lightfoot’s is nearly flawless: on pitch, with perfect phrasing and intonation. But beyond that is its intimacy. This simple song is straight from the heart of a man who is without peer in his ability to write and perform plainly-spoken parables about love and life.
I am a Canadian so have been listening to GL all my life it seems. I bought this record album when it came out so that is a clue to how old I am. Yup vinyl. He is considered a national treasure here and much loved. Thanks for taking me to a lovely memory. of listening to this when I was a dreamy eyed romantic way back then. I think the song you were thinking of was by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush.
And you almost got us, too! "If You Could Read My Mind" is beautiful, but "Beautiful" is truly beautiful, too. Love songs are something Gordon does so well. Thanks for the reaction!
Beautiful was played at our wedding for my wife. A story about Gordon Lightfoot. We were at a concert of his. I had the engagement ring in my pocket to pop the question at dinner after the concert. As we were walking out, he was signing autographs. Blocked my wife (then girlfriend) so she couldn't see what I was doing. I asked him to sign the ring case. He said sure, then I asked him to hand it to my wife. He said "Naw you should do it." I said, "I think it will surprise her and make it special to her if you do". So I moved aside, and motioned her up. He handed her the case and them looked at me. I proposed right then. She said yes after getting over the shock. He smiled and thanked me for letting him be a part of it and then said, "You two better stick together." That was 30 years ago.
One of my favorites from Gordon Lightfoot. My husband sang and played guitar, often singing Gordon Lightfoot selections. We saw him in the mid 90s. We were sitting on the grass at an amphitheater in Nashville. The consummate performer. His delivery so smooth and beautiful!
I have been a fan of Gordon Lightfoot for about 50 years and have attended nearly 40 live concerts. This song is especially significant because it was the song chosen by my daughter at her wedding reception for the Father-Daughter dance. I had no idea that she would choose that song so every time I hear it, I remember how happy we both were at that time.
To me, this song is incredibly romantic. The melody is superb & I had the DJ play it at my son’s wedding. Perfect wedding reception song. Have you listened to Railroad Trilogy? GL is a true storyteller.
"Sundown" is another one of his popular song. I was lucky enough to see him in concert 3 times. I sang this song to my girlfriend while we were sitting in my car listening to my 8-track. Gordon is 80 years old and still on tour.
Gordon Lightfoot is one of the most iconic singers ever to come from Canada. He's still touring. This was our wedding song and my wife is still beautiful.
I had forgotten about this beautiful gem of a song 😀 I love his smooth as silk voice 💚 love every song Gordon does, they are golden!!! I agree awesome melody Ty 👍
Thanks for this. Haven't seen this one in a long time. Have listened to Gordon for going on 60 years and really appreciate his all around talent . Glad you have found what Canucks have loved for years.
Ty, I have been a long time fan of Gordon Lightfoot and saw him in concert a few times, always a great performance. I played this for My significant other when it came out some years ago and got a big hug and kiss.
Man what a great song! Probably my favorite by him though he has a lot of great songs. I remember hearing it on the radio when very young. Kind of hauntingly beautiful and couldn't get it out of my head.
Ty for this had never heard it but have it on my favourites list now as i love his voice so very much, such a soothing warm voice and what a talented songwriter..I have found so many new discoveries since subscribing to your channel so TY..Keep Well Keep Strong My Friend
I guess if I had to choose, this is my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song. I grew up in Illinois and had a job at a record store when I was about 16, and we had Gordon Lightfoot on pretty heavy rotation. I’ve never heard it live, and he did a fantastic job. Thanks!
He sings very much in the style of the folk songs of the sixties. The heavy vibrato and the catchy melodies transitioned into his 70's stuff beautifully. He's one of my favorites of that era.
A favorite but I still listen to several of his songs regularly on my playlists. Another awesome gentle one is Softly, and a more recent one is Stay Loose.
Back when 8 tracks were the thing I had Gord's Gold. It's a 2 album set of his greatest hits. Not a bad song on it. I wore the 8 track out and got it on cassette. Song For A Winters Night is my favorite! You should really give that one a listen.
The Beautiful song reminds me of when I was young in my teens wanting someone to tell me I am beautiful. And still today to me this is God in Christ telling us we are beautiful and cherished.
Gordon is a writer/singer... anyone who writes understands too that you write truthfully and about things you know. The reason most people are not writers is they keep things inside. Imagine how hard it truly is to sing to the world all that we go through as humans? Here in Canada Gordon is one of our many natural treasures.
Thanks for being so well rounded my Brother. I've played this song at many weddings ! It's Beautiful LOL. PLEASE React to David Phelps, No More Night, The Dream and many more..... Live only, as he is better live then anybody in the studio ! Please
Beautiful ranks among my favorites. When it was released it was sooo underrated. You went right by I you could read my mind. Rush to judgement! As a Christian I’m going to do what you suggest before subscribing
Gordon has so many great songs..I love his song "If You Could Read My Mind" and of course the one you reacted to already..''the wreck of the edmund fitzgerald.''
I know exactly what you mean about hearing certain "sounds" in the music. Oftentimes, a song hits you in a certain way and there are many instances where you can't immediately explain why a certain song affects you so much. Over time you can identify what it is, but you just love certain songs from the get go. Keep up the great work !!
I have followed many different genres of music all my life. This is an amazing love song Gorgon Lightfoot is a great composer, singer. Very underappreciated.
This song came off of Gordon Lightfoot's 1972 LP Don Quixote album; Don Quixote is another good song. This Beautiful song is in itself, so Beautiful! I really love that Gordon writes his own music.
I’ve dedicated this song to my wife so many times, ever since I heard it the first time. My son now dedicates it to his wife. Gordon Lightfoot is a great story teller, but he puts a lot of feeling in this song too.
Now to get really deep into his music please react to ‘The CanadianRailroad Trilogy, one of the best songs, musically, and lyrically ever done about the natives of Canada. It could easily be about the natives of this country to though Lightfoot is part native Canadian!
I saw him do Canadian Railroad Trilogy live -- several years before the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald even came out. It was just Gordon Lightfoot alone with his guitar --- sounds filled Boston Symphony Hall and was probably the best concert I have ever attended.
Listened to Lightfoot a lot in the 70’s, when I was a bohemian 6th former in the UK and trying to find an alternative to punk. I had forgotten what a poet the man is. Time to revisit. Cheers Ty🥰
This took me back to when i was an Altar boy many years ago, this song was sung at soooo many weddings i began to know the words just from serving at weddings (and before anyone asks sarcastically since i was an Altar boy, no, never)
I've enjoyed hearing this song for years but I did not know what the name of the song was or who was singing it. Eventually after hearing on the Muzak in a store,. I remembered a fragment of the lyrics and Googled it, and was able to come up with Beautiful by Gordon Lightfoot.
Thanks for reviewing! This is my parents wedding song. Could you review some of the Dramatics? They are truly hidden diamonds. Lead singer Ron Banks had one of the finest falsettos. Just shopping, and their cover of Me and Mrs. Jones are two good ones to review.
Mr Smith : The 1st time I heard this, was on my wedding day, 8/15/76. It was my wife's favorite song & it was played as we made our vows. ----------------Though I lost her on 6/15/92, this song has always & will forever, be dedicated to her. ------------WolfSky9, 73 y/o
I have been enjoying your reactions so much!! This one is great fun, glad you like Gordon. Now you've been introduced to the Righteous Brothers. Roy Orbison and Aaron Neville - I would like to introduce you to one more golden voice - Johnny Maestro. (and his group the Brooklyn Bridge) It's hard to choose a song, but whatever it is, it has to be live. Worst That Can Happen is their biggest hit, and there is a beautiful live a capella version of I Thank the Moon. But I'm going to suggest Blessed Is the Rain (2005) posted by redbird Danielle. I just put all that info in there because you said you don't like people to post links. You like high notes and harmony, you'll get a bunch of that here.
Great reaction Ty,my favorite by Gordon Lightfoot is "sundown" but really, you can't go wrong with any of his songs... PS, please react to Rare Earth,I know you will like them.
After watching Aaron Neville and Linda Ronstadt, for your listening pleasure, I recommend James Brown and Luciano Pavarotti singing "It's a Man's World".
Bullsharks are found worldwide in coastal areas of warm ocean, in rivers and lakes. Also in shallow waters. They are very aggressive. They charge you like a bull by surprise then when you are disoriented they come for the bite.
I don't know what you meant by, "This one almost got me." Whenever I listen to the song, it brings tears to my eyes. I'm wondering if that's what you meant.
This is a beautiful, romantic song about how when you truly love someone, they look so perfect to you and are perfect for you. I have no specific memory associated with the song but it's about loving someone perfectly (like Jesus does) when intelligently you know they may not be. ❤️🎼💋😊
Nice song, I hadn't heard this one before. I love Gordon's voice, but this one didn't affect me like others have. You should hear "Mary In The Morning" (1967) by Glen Campbell.

Remember him back on the Tommy Hunter Show , etc.?
he should be a Canadian treasure and a Rock Hall of Famer - I also loved listening to the Guess Who - more phenomenal performers from Canada
And you almost got us, too! "If You Could Read My Mind" is beautiful, but "Beautiful" is truly beautiful, too. Love songs are something Gordon does so well. Thanks for the reaction!
My favorite Lightfoot song...and probably one of my favorites of any artist.
Beautiful was played at our wedding for my wife.

I discovered this song on You Tube during Covid. And I’ve been playing it ever since. As you expressed, GL’s song Beautiful is extremely beautiful. 🥰
One of my favorite tunes from Gordon Lightfoot! A great song that will be remembered many years from now!
I love all of Gordon's songs, but "If You Could Read My Mind" is in my top 10 favorite songs of all time. Simply gorgeous.
Gordan's voice is not quite as strong...but he is still touring at age 81.
Saw him a couple of years ago. Very frail and leaves some of the guitar to others, but still enthusiastic, sounds good and interacts with his fans
Saw him in London Ont a week after his 81st bday
Still sounded great
Saw him at Casino Rama about 7 years ago. Front row seats! His voice was still like butter and he never missed a beat.
To me, this song is incredibly romantic. The melody is superb & I had the DJ play it at my son’s wedding. Perfect wedding reception song.
Have you listened to Railroad Trilogy? GL is a true storyteller.
Gordon, my all time favorite! Beautiful indeed.
Gordon Lightfoot has such a unique voice, guitar style, and is a great song writer.
Glorious in its simplicity. Very much like "Color My World" by Chicago.
"Sundown" is another one of his popular song. I was lucky enough to see him in concert 3 times. I sang this song to my girlfriend while we were sitting in my car listening to my 8-track. Gordon is 80 years old and still on tour.
Ty, thank you and your your followers for keeping me company while, mend from neurosurgery.
This song tears me every time...in my top 10 from the first time I heard it. Thank you~❤️
@Gordon Lightfoot How many people are impersonating this man?? This is like... the third time! Nice try tho~
@@pamelajohnson6199. As if!
The great Gordon Lightfoot 👍😁💚
Gordon Lightfoot is one of the most iconic singers ever to come from Canada. He's still touring. This was our wedding song and my wife is still beautiful.

Oh you found a good one here Ty!!! One of the most touching songs and sung by a magical man!!!! Gordon Lightfoot is genius! More from him Ty!!!!!
Man what a great song! Probably my favorite by him though he has a lot of great songs. I remember hearing it on the radio when very young. Kind of hauntingly beautiful and couldn't get it out of my head.

I think Gordon said this was his favorite composition. And it certainly is mine.
My now ex husband had this played for me at our wedding. Still gives me chills, and brings me to tears.
Great artist...decades of art

Yes! Winter's Night takes you there!
Sarah McLaughlin covered Song For a Winter's Night... absolutely gorgeous rendition...

Joe Lopez. But this song is about going through a divorce.
@@PC-dc1kv I THINK you’re thinking of “If you could read my mind” THAT one is about divorce or splitting up!
Beautiful is just that, Beautiful!
Joe Lopez. Right you are. I was thinking of IYCRMM instead. Glad things are good with you and your wife!
The most beautiful song ever!❤
Wow.... can't remember the last time tears slipped from eyes....
Thanks! I had never heard this song of his before.
It is a beautiful song.
My favorite Gordon Lightfoot song
When this came out I remember so many people choosing it for the first dance at their weddings.
Great Great Music….they just don’t make em like this anymore. True singing and songwriting at its BEST from an era we will never get back.

Wife and I are longtime Lightfoot fans. Told her years ago (married 31 years) is her song. That is how I feel about her and our years together.
MRM is my favourite! He has unique, open-minded tastes in music - REALLY enjoy his channel!!
One of my favorites, along with "Restless" and "Let it Ride"
It takes me straight back to Houston, 1973.
I have been listening to Gordon Lightfoot for a long time. I like his album Gord's Gold, which has many beautiful songs on it.
Thank you for doing this song. Loved it.
My favorite of his songs. So sad he passed.
I've always loved this song. It's beautiful!
Makes me think of my beautiful granddaughter.
R.I.P. Gordon!
Listened to Lightfoot a lot in the 70’s, when I was a bohemian 6th former in the UK and trying to find an alternative to punk. I had forgotten what a poet the man is. Time to revisit. Cheers Ty🥰
He is a Master Storyteller and the love of my life. My late husband chose this as our wedding song.

This song was beautiful just like its name!
Probably in the top five all time wedding songs!
Listen to never too close. A favorite of mine.

"Summerside of Life" by Gord would be a great reaction.. Going to see Gordon November 22 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Can't wait!!
Canada's greatest singer/songwriter.

Listen to A Winter's Night by Lightfoot. Evocative, especially the recording. 🌧 P.S. You're funny!
Play this one for the special lady in your life and see if that don't work out just fine

I am a terrible interior decorator so take this with a grain, but I love the color scheme of what you got going on behind you. Oh yea Gordon's great.
Nice song, I hadn't heard this one before. I love Gordon's voice, but this one didn't affect me like others have. You should hear "Mary In The Morning" (1967) by Glen Campbell.
Good morning Ty & family 😁 have a blessed day 🙏💚
Killer song. Solidified me as a Lightfoot fan.
This is our wedding song.
Rainy Day People, my favorite Lightfoot song.
