I did sew stuff as needed around the house over the years. I have had to put new zippers in everything from jackets to sofa cushions. Kids are tough on things. I am interested in improving my skills. Just found your videos. Not planning on quilting anything but it fascinates me to watch someone who knows what they are doing. Thanks!
My daughter told me to be sure to watch this video as we purchased some waxed canvas. I am a little shy in using. We did purchase some wax from Fabric Fun House to try to wax our own. Would be great if you would do a video on waxing if you have tired or have a interest. And I so appreciate all the comments. TY!!!
Totally enjoyed your video. My son is almost finished with his veterinarian degree and he asked me to make him a "doctor bag". I am going to try it out of waxed canvas. Your tips were so helpful and encouraging!
Nice. Love your presentation style, and your sense of design. Many people use a hot air heat gun to re-melt the waxed cotton. Non-contact, easy to moderate heat and area of aduustment.
Great video! By the way, I have used my blow dryer to heat up my waxed canvas to remove creases and white marks. I just keep the nozzle moving. I have also heard that a heat embossing tool can be used instead of a blow dryer.
With the waxed canvas it is the top stitching and contrast colors that make the difference. My daughter had made the Wristlet Clutch out of some waxed canvas. She didn't have any contrast coloring. In relooking at the video the Wristlet Clutch or the Paradigm bag would look really nice quilted.
handy tips there - thank you. I have worn wax jackets, coats, jerkins and chaps for over 50 years and they are great. I soon learned that re-waxing is easy to do and saves a fortune if you make your own wax mixtures. In a lot of cases, it is easier to make the garment or bag before waxing. I would recommend fitting removable linings for jackets and the like. Makes for easy cleaning but if it is fixed in place, re-waxing requires skill and experience if the wax is not to bleed through. Wax is water and windproof but it does have a very cold wet feel to it and you do need an inner lining if you are going to be comfortable. Thanks for not adding annoying background music. So many folks do, and it makes impossible for my old ears to hear what they are saying
Never apologise for dogs playing, in the background or anywhere else, just be grateful that you won a prize in the canine lottery. Also really nice work, planning to use something similar for my greyhounds new waxed coat.
It’ll leave a build up one your machine bed too. Fabric Funhouse should offer to send on a roll. Yes more expensive but then you don’t have all the fold marks. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talents with us!
I have almost a yard of canvas left over from lining a bag. The pattern said I needed 1.5 yards of 54” fabric for the lining but I somehow ended up with almost a yard left over so I thought I’d make it into waxed canvas and am looking for something to make out of the waxed canvas. You’ve given me ideas!
I enjoy & appreciate your RUclips posts. Can you tell me if the orange bag in this video is your design. I love the cross hatch you did on it and love your work.
Another awesome video! And just at the right time for me. I’m making the same backpack and out of waxed canvas-both firsts for me, so I really appreciated all your tips. Can you tell me what you are using for a lining? Would using waterproof canvas be a dumb idea? I was thinking it would give the softer outer bag a little more structure???? I really enjoyed all your info! Thanks. 😊
I made one with a WC lining and it wasn’t stiff at all due to not having any interfacing. If I were to do a WC interior again I’d use a sew in stabilizer.
Thanks. Very nice. Truly educational and pleasant to watch. I am making a waxed canvas knife bag. Adding some rivets. Will use your folded in-strap technique for the ties. Thanks.
Great video thanks. I've just purchased some waxed canvas so I thought I'd use foam and try a bit of quilting like yourself and sew on foam at the back as an interfacing in the hope that this would give it structure. Not sure yet if I'll use waterproof canvas for lining. I'd like to see how your one turned out.

Hello - thanks for the great tutorial. Why is the reason you fold the fabric in the grid pattern? I was trying to figure out if this just adds a cool effect to the fabric or if you used that instead of a marking tool. Thank you.
Very cool video. Very insightful. I teach wilderness survival skills and am planning to make waxed canvas haversacks and some backpacks for some of my students. But my question is, is the foam you used closed cell, in that it won't absorb water, should any happen to get to the foam?
Thank you for the tutorial. When seeing straps from waxed canvas, you used two different colors, which I liked, however, I do not have enough of one color to use as the accent. I’m wondering is it ok to use the same color for both the inside and outside straps?
You can eliminate all the folding by just using the quilt ruler attachment that comes w most domestic machines. You can adjust spacing to whatever you choose. Always start quilting in the middle :).

What kindnof needle are you sewing with for waxed canvas please? One good tip for you is to use a heat gun on low rather than your iron for re-melting the wax 😊
Hi, you can always find that info in the description box of each video, but in this one I used a size 14 schmetz. Generally I use a size 18 now (this is an old video)

Hi Nicole!!! One of my first bags I made was inspired by you and using cork fabric. I made two Dollie mini crossbody bags and they came out beautifully so thanks! Now I'm making a sling bag with waxed canvas and want to quilt the front panel. It has a zipper so how do I accomplish the quilting with a zipper in the middle? BTW, LOVE your tattoos! Thanks!
Yes, quilt b4 zipper. So the zipper for pocket is to be added in the middle of the front panel going from left to right, making a "whole" for the zipper. Won't that process cut the stitches of the quilting? Thanks for responding so quickly!

No, waxed cotton is cotton fabric and waxed canvas is canvas fabric. Waxed canvas is made of a linen/cotton combo so it has a slightly different hand feel, and is generally drier than waxed cotton. Both are great to use!
Can I use waxed canvas for the interior of a toiletry/doppelganger kit bag? I'm making one for my brother and he wants a interior that would be more water resistant. And if so, what should I interface with on the canvas? I'm using cork fabric for my outside (from fabric funhouse)
Hi Ellen, waxed canvas is a great material for lining! I personally wouldn’t interface it, if I did anything I’d quilt foam to the cork or baste spray some interfacing. Unfortunately interfacing won’t stick to WC.
@@SewGnar Thank you so much! As you can tell, I am very new to sewing, especially with the different fabrics. I've been having lots of fun with bag making, wallets and such but still learning. I ordered my cork based on where you do as I recently started with your videos. Thanks for teaching me!!
@@SewGnar ok, one last question. What kind of foam or interfacimg would you use with the cork? And my machine is a domestic sewing machine as well. Any of your suggestions I would gladly take😀
Hello! I finished my brother's dopp kit/toiletry bag today. It worked great I thought using the waxed canvas for the interior so thanks for your opinion on that. Sure hope my brother likes it! I had watched your video on your dopp kit as well. Very helpful. And I found a new place to order from for the cork...fabric funhouse!
I always learn a lot from you. Thank you! I like that you are not an ‘expert’ but, like the rest of us, kind of learn as you go. I appreciate you sharing what you learned. It seems like every time I make a project, my biggest learnings are about the textiles I’m using so it helpful to see these tips.
Joann has 4 available in store. I assume it’s the “naked” foam, no fusible or interfacing foam, correct? I’m so excited to dip into my waxed canvas stash now!
I use the fusible foam but it doesn’t fuse to WC cause you don’t want to iron it on (I spray baste it on WC) but I do buy fusible in case I use it on fabric.
If you treat your wax canvas the right-way you never have to wax-it ever again, I wax my own and treat it for 3hours in a drier, and yes u can use 808 interfacing on waxed fabric, bad information you are giving once its treated the right way you should not have wax film on your hands. Crazy info
If you iron 808 onto waxed canvas it’ll melt the wax 😂 sew in is entirely possible. If you don’t like the channel/info, then you can easily turn it off. I guess I’ll ask the people who produce & sell this waxed canvas why they told me it’d have to be re-waxed eventually and why they sell bars of their wax 🤔
My entire channel is about bag making so I’m not sure why that was confusing to you. Is it necessary to be rude? You actually took time out of your day to comment that, hilarious 😆
Clara - I “covered” my tattoos only because I put on a sweater because I was cold. If you don’t like my tattoos then I suggest unfollowing or not watching my videos because I’m only getting more and more! Also - it’s extremely rude to comment on how someone looks on *their* page.
Any of your suggestions I would gladly take😀
@@ellenbritton1540 I use flex foam 77 and 808 stabilizer by Pellon
Soy de Argentina...Espectacular trabajo me encanto
Thanks for watching!! ❤️
What sort of thread do you use for waxed cotton bags please?
I used the same thread on everything I make, gutermaan mara 120!
What weight of waxed canvas did you use?
I’m not sure but it’s from fabric funhouse - you can check their website!
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Curious about the foam, is that something I could get at a fabric/craft store?
If they sell Pellon products then yes!
What type of foam interface is that?
Flex foam by Pellon!
Nice ty
can you link, what kind of foam is it?
It’s pellon flex foam 77, you can Google it and find the price you’re comfortable with. I don’t have one place that I purchase from.
@@SewGnar thanx
What pattern is the green and orange bag please?
That is the Range Backpack by Noodlehead
Love it! 😘
Thank you! 😊
Obrigado! 💛
do you sell your stuff??
I do, yes! www.SewGnar.co
I just got my first order of waxed canvas and I’m afraid to touch it and ruin it 😂 thank you sooo much for the tips!!
You got this!!
Wow i thought this was about wax canvas not bag making
My entire channel is about bag making so I’m not sure why that was confusing to you. Is it necessary to be rude? You actually took time out of your day to comment that, hilarious 😆
Thank you for covering your tattoos. Your tutorial is good, but I couldn’t take thr tattoos.
This is a really weird comment.
Clara - I “covered” my tattoos only because I put on a sweater because I was cold. If you don’t like my tattoos then I suggest unfollowing or not watching my videos because I’m only getting more and more! Also - it’s extremely rude to comment on how someone looks on *their* page. My tattoos are my business and if you don’t like them you can easily see your way out! ✌🏽
Not really tips and tricks, more how I make my quilted bags. I fast forward through most of the waffle.
What?
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing all you’ve learned
No problem!
