I absolutely love blue agaves. I've gotten a copy of two of your books on succulents. Thanks so much for writing them. I have succulents and cacti growing all over. I also have three blue agaves growing next to my front stairs. If clustered close together with other succulents and cacti, would they still get huge? Wouldn't that be similar to the constraints of a pot?
I do not know if you can see the picture I sent you in the comment section but there's century plants around my apartment complex and one of them has this enormous elephant trunk like structure in the middle of it what the heck is it?

Very late to comment on the video, but never mind. I live on the Isle of Wight (off the south coast of England), these plants are getting more popular around here. Most are the Agave americana, I have Agave parryi and Agave multifilifera.
It does seem that tough, hardy and prolific Agave americana is taking over the world (not sure what that says about us Yanks). Very smart of you to grow more manageable, less aggressive and politely small species.

It doesn't grow back. It's pruning for aesthetics and to get leaves out of the way. These are not plants that can be trimmed back and regrow afterwards.
I have a BIG PATCH of these. Didn't realise they pupped because they're dropping seeds everywhere and PACKED in one area.I have the stalks collapsing on my fence and have 2 bags full of seed pods. They're TRULY BIG BIG. It's a battle to walk thru the patch. Literally have sheep eating the leaves of the smaller ones
I didn't know much about the plant, except it needed little watering and looked nice (even removed the spikes with nail clippers - it works and they don't grow back). So i planted some pups in my back yard, but soon was infested with pups, i've dug out the mother plant now but still have pups appearing even a year after (i usually dig under and try and get as much of the root as possible), but they still keep popping up else where even though there's no above ground attachment. Any tips for destroying the root system? Desperately want to have my garden back. Thanks
my friend has one that suddenly grew about 35 feet..it has a big trunk and branches like a tree..now its turning yellow and its leaning to one side...she said its been normal forever..now its grown until its huge... and has what appears to be big seeds in the branches....
It's also important to note that the insides or the juice of the plant is very very very very painful when you get it on your skin. It causes you to itch and hurt and I just dont see anyone mention that on any vids about them

I have a question... my agaves are in pots getting bigger and healthy looking EXCEPT.... they are growing downward instead of upward and they are making a sort of circle formation around the pot... how can I straighten them out and why do they do it??? (I have Americana & Parrasana)
Sounds like they're not getting enough sun. Their leaves will curve downward to expose more of their surface area to available light. You didn't mention where you live, but they should be fine outdoors spring through fall. Expose them to greater light gradually, i.e. cover them with a sheet at first, then remove it for greater periods of time until they're in full sun at least half of the day. (Similar to you building resistance to the sun's UV rays when getting a tan.) New growth should be upright, but I don't know if downward-curved agave leaves will turn back up. Will you let me know?

I have a question. I planted 4 century plants that were given to me 7 years ago. I now have 30 plus plants. They have been doing great until this year. They are turning grey and it looks like they are drying out. They look horrible. Do you know what this could be?
It depends. If they've gone months without water it could simply be dehydration, and they're struggling to survive by drawing on moisture in their leaves, which will look wrinkled. The rosettes will close somewhat, lower leaves will dry and curl, and for all the world they'll look like they're goners. But with the winter rains they should revive. You also could give them several deep soakings.
DO the pups just pop up around it or do you have to dig around big plant to find them attached to mother plant? I think My mom has 2 big ones but never seen any pups growing anywhere around it....They are probably 4ft tall now Look like the americana one bluish color
The pups are attached to the mother plant by shallow roots. If the ground is soft, when you pull the pup out of the ground, a foot or so of root will come with it. Not all agaves species pup, but americanas usually do.

Welcome nephew! Sure, I'll take the Huell Hauser compliment. Re your question, I don't see why not, especially if your climate is similar to the commercial agave fields in Mexico. But since the tequila agave (A. tequilana) is harvested when sugars are highest, pre-bloom, you'll have a long wait (7 years, I believe). Time better spent on tequila-tasting tours in Mexico?
Can you please tell me if my very large variegated agave will grow out from the center and fill out? I was in shock this morning when I saw that my maintenance “gardener” had cut off several leaves (mostly on only one side of the plant!) right in the middle of the leaves and not even at the base! They weren’t in anyone’s way. They were healthy. And he didn’t ask me if I wanted it done. I feel ABSOLUTELY SICK over this. Is it completely destroyed or will it grow out from the middle If I cut the damaged ones to their base and also cut others to balance the look of the plant??? Thank you sooooo much FOR ANY WORDS OF WISDOM!!!
Hi Kimberly -- Why would he do that?! I'd find out. It's not a pleasant task (considering the teeth along the leaves) so he must have had a reason. Unfortunately the only thing you can do to restore the balance and aesthetics of the plant is to "even it up" -- cut the truncated leaves all the way to the base and also others so the agave resembles a pineapple. It's not a bad look, really, and the plant doesn't care. It'll continue to produce new leaves from its upright center cone.
What about in the more rainier more tropical regions in the United States 🇺🇸 or Florida? Can they survive with so much rain water? I heard they were in the cactus 🌵 family
We bought 5 of these at Orchard Hardware recently to line the front of our small ranch home in FL. They are roughly about 12 in. in diameter right now which is right where we want to keep them. I didn’t realize they grew so big! If we were to keep them inside the black plastic containers they came in would it minimize the size they would grow to?
Great question! Yes, you can slow the growth of potentially large agaves if you keep them in their 5-gallon nursery pots...up to a point. As the agave fills its pot with roots and offsets, it will slowly starve. Before that happens (in three to five years), you could remove them and prune their roots, effectively creating bonsai'd plants. An aesthetic consideration: Above-ground agaves lined up in nursery pots along the front of your house will likely be an eyesore, so invest in pots that fit the site and your architecture---the larger the better. Or saw off the bottoms of the nursery pots and then bury the plants, pots and all. That way, roots can access soil and nutrients, but being constricted by a nursery pot to a depth of two feet will significantly slow growth and discourage the formation of pups. If you decide to plant agaves in the ground still in their nursery pots, cut off the rims so they don't show.

My dad has 4 that are about 35 years old and within the past 5 years they started to get little one behind them and I just started looking into and digging the little ones up and putting them in 2 gallon pots, but never knew they basically regrow from their roots I’m guessing, because the 4 have already had the giant stock grow out the middle of them, and not sure how often occurs.
@@QueenofSucculents could be a different strain of agave but I know for a fact they are over 25 years old, and it’s possible my dad was taking the pups many years back and gave them to neighbors. Cause I just started digging the pups up and putting them in pots.
I was cutting this plant with a chain saw and a lot of the plans goo made contact with my skin,now my arm looks like it has a marbling score of 6.what do I do cause last time this happens it took months to heal.
I removed three large ones from a full sun area to partial shade (75% shaded) will they thrive? I also think moving them stressed them out, will they bounce back? Thanks!
It depends. They have a chance if they have enough roots to sustain their leaves---or if they grow new roots soon enough. That must have quite an undertaking!

No question, audio is my biggest challenge. It's a learning process. This dates back to 2016. Newer videos don't have music at the same time as I'm speaking. I'm glad you were able to get some value from it.
Planted three blue century plants in June, and two out of the three have five pups . That's why I'm here at your YT video to find out what to do with the pups as you call them. What a great channel! Had no idea they grow ten feet tall.
Debra Lee Baldwin and they are very heavy. I had one that was as big around as a tire and 50 feet tall! It fell into the street in front of the house and took some big guys to haul it off. Then the plant died😞
Ok....so why are there no utube videos on how to actually plant a century plant? Are you suppose to cut a green pod off and plant? Do you cut one open and plant whats inside? Do you waot until entire plant is dead? Do you take seeds after winter when plant has split pods open 40 videos on century plants and yet nobody has a video on how to? Please does Anyone have an answer or an actual you tube video?
How to plant a century plant...if it hasn't already planted itself? The easiest way is to wiggle loose a pup from the ground around the mother plant, then dig a hole and stick it wherever you want it.
Hi, Debra I'm looking for someone to give and advice about my agave plants and seeing a few videos find you and i hope you can help me, i buy a two gorgeous agaves last summer they are outside in a pot like 2ft ×3ft, they start to growing magnificent but i left outside i think they could resist the winter,i live in North Carolina, but whit the first freezing all the leafs just start to go down, after put it inside the house but whit the air hot start to dryer and put it in the porch and see the leafs liking something like brown so in this moment i don't know if they died or if i still to make something to save it, any suggestions? ? I'm really appreciate
North Carolina is pushing the limits for outdoor cultivation of agaves. You're better off growing them in pots and overwintering them indoors near a sunny window.
I'll go ahead and warn someone so they don't go through what i did. I was going to cut down like 10 of these in my mothers yard and as i was cutting the first one i got the plant material all over my arms and legs... and i swear i have never itched like that in my entire life. luckily my mother has a pool and i jumped in immediately, thats how bad it was for me, i couldn't take the itchyness. it was unbearable. My legs and arms look like they had poison ivy on them. Maybe this will save someone and not do what i mistakingly did. be careful.. i used my stump grinder with my handy remote to finish the job like i should have done in the first place 😂. Lesson learned.
These are extremely poisonous and painful at that. I have one in my yard that I was trimming and somehow ended up with the sap on my hand...instant pain like 1000's of ant bites and now a severe rash and it has swelled. Soon this will be a dead agave in my yard.

You don't say where you're located, but here in CA, century plants are so common that succulent specialty nurseries don't bother to sell them.

They'll eventually give up if you keep after them. They do die if sprayed with Round-Up (you didn't hear that here).
Our neighbors have these in San Antonio, Texas. We don’t care for them but I was researching them out of curiosity

It's fine in pots, but after three or four years the roots will fill the pot and the leaves will start looking less vital.

No, I don't recommend it. They get too large, even in pots.

Great PSA ! As with any plant but especially with these monsters, always pick the right plant for the location. Do the needed research.
I'm guessing they also give agave syrup. Just not the kind used for tequila.

I'm a newbie agave owner...is it okay to clip the ends of the very sharp tips?
Yes, in fact I recommend it. I cut only enough (1/4-inch or less) to blunt them. If you take too much off, it can spoil the way they look.

If you decide to plant agaves in the ground still in their nursery pots, cut off the rims so they don't show.

My dad has 4 that are about 35 years old and within the past 5 years they started to get little one behind them and I just started looking into and digging the little ones up and putting them in 2 gallon pots, but never knew they basically regrow from their roots I’m guessing, because the 4 have already had the giant stock grow out the middle of them, and not sure how often occurs.
Huh? Agave americana doesn't live to be 35 years old, that I'm aware of. And it pups at a much younger age, like five years.
@@QueenofSucculents could be a different strain of agave but I know for a fact they are over 25 years old, and it’s possible my dad was taking the pups many years back and gave them to neighbors. Cause I just started digging the pups up and putting them in pots.
My century plant did not grow that large.
They need to be fed a cat or dog every so often.

I was cutting this plant with a chain saw and a lot of the plans goo made contact with my skin,now my arm looks like it has a marbling score of 6.what do I do cause last time this happens it took months to heal.

I removed three large ones from a full sun area to partial shade (75% shaded) will they thrive? I also think moving them stressed them out, will they bounce back? Thanks!
It depends. They have a chance if they have enough roots to sustain their leaves---or if they grow new roots soon enough. That must have quite an undertaking!

No question, audio is my biggest challenge. It's a learning process. This dates back to 2016. Newer videos don't have music at the same time as I'm speaking. I'm glad you were able to get some value from it.

No, agave leaves don't work as cuttings to start new plants. Pups or bulbils are the best way to go.

There isn't anything you can do to stop it. Even if you cut it off, it'll still form flowering shoots.

and they are very heavy. I had one that was as big around as a tire and 50 feet tall! It fell into the street in front of the house and took some big guys to haul it off. Then the plant died😞
Ok....so why are there no utube videos on how to actually plant a century plant? Are you suppose to cut a green pod off and plant? Do you cut one open and plant whats inside? Do you waot until entire plant is dead? Do you take seeds after winter when plant has split pods open 40 videos on century plants and yet nobody has a video on how to? Please does Anyone have an answer or an actual you tube video?
How to plant a century plant...if it hasn't already planted itself? The easiest way is to wiggle loose a pup from the ground around the mother plant, then dig a hole and stick it wherever you want it.

Hi, Debra I'm looking for someone to give and advice about my agave plants and seeing a few videos find you and i hope you can help me, i buy a two gorgeous agaves last summer they are outside in a pot like 2ft ×3ft, they start to growing magnificent but i left outside i think they could resist the winter,i live in North Carolina, but whit the first freezing all the leafs just start to go down, after put it inside the house but whit the air hot start to dryer and put it in the porch and see the leafs liking something like brown so in this moment i don't know if they died or if i still to make something to save it, any suggestions? ? I'm really appreciate
North Carolina is pushing the limits for outdoor cultivation of agaves. You're better off growing them in pots and overwintering them indoors near a sunny window.

No. Entirely different plant from a different part of the world.

Not that I'm aware of, although it wouldn't be wise to ingest it in any form other than tequila.
Agave Americana is poisonous, Aloe vera is not.
Most people get confused with these two plants when trying not to get poisoned.

I'll go ahead and warn someone so they don't go through what i did. I was going to cut down like 10 of these in my mothers yard and as i was cutting the first one i got the plant material all over my arms and legs... and i swear i have never itched like that in my entire life. luckily my mother has a pool and i jumped in immediately, thats how bad it was for me, i couldn't take the itchyness. it was unbearable. My legs and arms look like they had poison ivy on them. Maybe this will save someone and not do what i mistakingly did. be careful.. i used my stump grinder with my handy remote to finish the job like i should have done in the first place 😂. Lesson learned.
These are extremely poisonous and painful at that. I have one in my yard that I was trimming and somehow ended up with the sap on my hand...instant pain like 1000's of ant bites and now a severe rash and it has swelled. Soon this will be a dead agave in my yard.
