@@RootedTheory So many beautiful landscapes shown, very helpful. Thank you for this great content, far better than some of the AI narrated garbage out there.
It is so good to watch a clip full of info. One where I don’t have to have my thumb glued to the FF button to cut out the senseless chatter. Thank you really enjoyed watching.
We have 3 clumps of Agave Americana. Once it has pups it is a lot of maintenence. A local couple who were starting a succulent business pruned out some pups. There were Black Widow Spiders hiding underneath!
Thank you for the video. It was very informative. I have transformed our public space landscaping with desert themed succulents, with Agave at the center. With the rock flows, it looks great.
I’m always so excited to see a new video pop up, and now more than ever as I just bought a house with a blank slate of a landscape, except for a canary date palm and... a huge century plant. May I suggest two videos? One on the different types of ceonathus and their uses, and another on ceanothus vs plumbago, as it seems to me they have a lot of similarities despite their different origins. Thanks for all you do!
Congrats on the new home purchase! And thank you so much for the kind words… Incredibly encouraging, and very much appreciated. Will absolutely take your video suggestions into consideration. I’m always thinking about relevant topics and Ceanothus would be fantastic. Thank you so much for watching the videos… And have fun designing your new landscape!
Love the info, especially the low tolerance. I am in Northern Ca, Chico in a canyon and we do go down to the high 20’s in the winter and I have lost a few of my new plants. 😢 expensive and frustrating.
I'm in Maryland. Would love a tropical garden. Not sure if they'd survive our snow. Will visit your site and schedule a consult. Actually, I'm here visiting California. May drop by..thanks
Thank you for the wonderland kind words.. and thanks for watchin! Don’t hesitate to ask a question at any point along the way with your landscape project 😎
I'd love one of these. I love plants we don't have rhese here in england. We do buy oftern not good health.ive seen the blue ones once in someone's garden.
Thanks for watchin! So if an Agave gets to big for its intended space, there’s a couple things you can do. The first thing would be to transplant it to a larger space. However, transplanting agaves is not an easy task as they are kinda hard to manage. If the transplanting option won’t work, I suggest trimming off the bottom layers of the leaves so it’s more upright and vase-shaped. with that said, if it’s in a spot that poses a threat to people as they walk by because of the spine, I would just suggest to remove it and plant either a smaller non-threatening agave, or something completely different.
Hey! So there’s a few things you could do… If it’s a concern, you could simply just clip off the sharp tips with pruners. I’ve also seen a little less orthodox methods… People putting bits of cork or even Styrofoam on the tips. However, doesn’t look great aesthetically. I would recommend just pruning them off. Just the tips… Not down to the fleshy leaf 😎
In the UK, Agave americana and Agave parryi are the only two varieties that are winter hardy with good drainage. Some sources say that they can as low as -9C before suffering damage. I am on the South Coast in the UK and several neighbours have them growing in their front gardens. One has a span of over 10 feet. We get regular frosts and mine are outside in a pot all winter.
Great video. Thanks I am planning a garden for my new townhouse when the build is finished. I already have some small agave. Some are small {otatorum and a variegated Potatorum kichiokan. A small Victoria and a similar white stripe Schidigera. I just got small agave xylonacantha pup. Aloes are amazing. I think the Blue Glow you featured will also look grea, and wont get too big for my smaller garden areas. Thankyou, I will avoid some of those bigger beauties. Cacti and Aloes thrive in our Australian sun.
@@RootedTheory I have a lot of nice cacti as well. They will stay in my greenhouse at my dear mothers place, except for a few big specimens to go with those aloe. Your video has inspired me.
Ahhh Hahaa… well thanks for watchin. Yeah TX generally gets a little too cool in the winter months for a lot of Agave varieties. There are definitely a handful that can take the low temps though. Good luck on the planting 😎🌱🙏🏼
@@RootedTheory I see you there in the Golden State. Had the blessed experience of living there for 4 years. Left last year and boy do I miss the weather and beaches. Thanks for the wishes, I need them.
Nice! Yeah it’s definitely a nice spot to be. I could do without all the political nonsense that goes on over here, but all and all, it’s pretty great. pretty much every outdoor activity you could want is within an hour drive. Whereabouts did you live?
@@RootedTheory I hear ya. All colors bleed the same. I tapped out. I was in Laguna Niguel, at the edge between Dana Point and S. Laguna Beach. Paradise!
I have many Agave angustifolia Marginata - Caribbean Agave and one is starting to spike. They do propagate and spread. I notice some of my neighbors have now planted them. They are very showy but have to be careful because they are spiny .
I bought 2 Agave Desert Escape last year at Walmart, $20 each, 20" tall+/-. Both are setting flowers this year. I was excited unt8l I read it's going to die! Can I remove the flower to delay death until the pups can grow more? Each has 1-2 little pups.😢
Desert Escape Agaves are beautiful! Unfortunately removing the blooms will not really delay the plant dying. It’s kind of like it’s internal clock. Just harvest any pups you can off the base. You may also be able to harvest pops off the bloom stalk. Good luck!
They generally are. Most Agaves are grown in the inland empire of So Cal. Property is cheap and climate is perfect for them. As a result, they tend to be slightly less. However some Agaves grow super slow, and that’s typically what sets plant prices… how long the nursery has to hold them before sale.
I need to get rid of my agave century plants! They are spreading and taking over! I like unusual plants but definitely planted this in the wrong place!
Hey! I’m not super familiar with it. I’ve only seen a couple of them here in So Cal. It’s considered a tropical or sun tropical Florida native. I’m not sure about how well it may do elsewhere.
Hi I live in the UK so very rainy ☔, I grow agave gentryi, agave ferox, agave chrysantha, we have snow most winters, went down to - 7 this year and they handle it fine.
Your video is so silly all agaves have sharp ends or thorns.. is like making a vídeo of knives and complaining about how sharp they are 🙄🙄.. welcome to Merica!.
We’ve had specific requests for agave without SHARP terminal spines, which if you watched the video you would see that some don’t and can be considered much safer than others. Nothing really strikes me as silly about that.
This was a phenomenal video very well put together

I agree with you about agave Blue Glow. It's my favorite because it doesn't produce any pups.

I have a few shark skin agaves and they have been my favorite so far. Hard to find though.
Yes! Agave Shark Skin is incredible 🙌🙌
Are there any non monocarpic varieties that don’t take as long to bloom or bloom more than once?
There is a subspecies of Agave striata called falcata that has been reported to be polycarpic. I personally don’t have experience with it.
what is courtyard?
go in sun or shade ohhhh cool
One of my favorite plants. But it’s so slow to grow 😅
Yup! But worth the wait!
I find agaves very expensive in the SF bay area.. I see your channel is called "budget plants".. are they cheaper at southern california nurseries?
They generally are. Most Agaves are grown in the inland empire of So Cal. Property is cheap and climate is perfect for them. As a result, they tend to be slightly less. What some solitary agaves? Ones that don’t pup
I need to get rid of my agave century plants! They are spreading and taking over! I like unusual plants but definitely planted this in the wrong place!
Do you cut the flowering stalks down if they get too high?
Yes… These are monocarpic, so once the flower stock dies off you can cut them back.
What can you tell me about agave decipiens? I think they're also known as the Florida agave. It's hard to find much about them

Agave attenuata and A. Blue Flame for sure. They are more flexible/fleshy so they can take more H2o
