You just explained in less than 10 minutes, what I've been trying for the last several years to get a handle on. That was an absolutely excellent, clear, cogent explanation. I'm going to start the process of writing out the chord tones in a progression today. This will have to enhance almost everything about my playing. Thanks so much. I may just have to take your Chord Mastery course.

Does anyone think about this numerically? Take the Cmaj scale and the 1-3-5 are C and 6-1-3 are Am. This is useful because it is key agnostic and especially evident in blues thinking I IV and V. I’ve been interested in improvising for about two years and still struggle with chord tones and aimless phrases. I mainly think of chords as shapes within the scale and feature them in my phrases. Fantastic video, btw. Definitely will check out the chord tone book and chord mastery.

Thanks for the video, very clear explanation. I have a question about voice leading, not sure if I can explain what I mean, but I'll try: If you use voice leading to make a chord progression like the one in this video around 2:40 the root chords (C) goes up 1 inversion every time you play the chord progression. So if you keep doing that you'll end up with very high chords. What is a good solution to use voiceleading and not climb with the chords? Thanks! :)
