  • Now that Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is confirmed a remake many questions are arising. What is the difference between a remake and remaster? Why does Nintendo sometimes just put the title for the remake and others have the HD moniker? Are these ports instead? How about Metroid Prime Remastered or Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition? Is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D a remake or a remaster? What is the definition of remaster in games? What is the definition of remake? That is what we are discussing today!

    REMASTER is making the original environment better…updating what’s already there that we are familiar with.
    REMAKE is going back to the concept design of the original and physically changing the environment that will be new to us.

    Practically when playing it, there's not really much of a difference between playing a remaster that redoes all the visuals like Metroid Prime and a remake that's very faithful to the original like TTYD.

      I mean, this is basically a half hour video to say "Nintendo considers things remasters if they reuse the same source code, regardless of how much else is changed or new"
      People give this stuff too much thought. That said, it may be nice if there were a word for remasters that create some/all new assets for the game/add some content to the games vs what are effectively re-optimized ports that may have a resolution change vs the originals

    The only thing that Nintendo doesn’t do in their remakes (that other publishers do) is significantly alter or update the gameplay. So I tend to grade their remakes and remasters on a on a slightly different scale than someone like, say, Capcom.

    One method for me to know if it's a remaster or remake is that, if I can imagine an on/off switch that can show the original graphics and the current one, then it's a remaster.
    That's why I also got confused about Thousand Year Door, coz it feels like I can use a toggle for it, but it is considered a remake.

  • @eddieanderson9399

    Links Awakening was more of a remake cause its look was way more different than the original even though its more of the same game. Metroid Prime was more of a Remaster.

    • @toast7969
      @toast7969 3 месяца назад

      I agree, but I think theres 3 different types. Theres remasters like metroid prime...theres graphical remakes like Links awakening, Ocarina 3d, Super mario allstars. Then theres a full blown remake like final fantasy 7 where developers go back to the same world, characters and story to expand on everything with modern tech.

      Metronidazole Prime would technically be a remake by that definition since the assets are completely new.

    • @Chronoflation
      @Chronoflation 3 месяца назад

      Nintendo considers a game a remake if it's made from the ground up and a remasters if it uses the same source code. New visuals don't matter if it's the same code. Though, it would be nice if there were a term for games that get all new assets, because all of the assets in games like Ocarina 3D and Metroid Prime Remastered were remade from the ground up, or mostly remade from the ground up. The only reason people get confused about remakes is cause they try to judge it based on what they can see, but the game isn't a remake or remasters based on what you see. If they kept all the same visual assets and remade the source code, Nintendo would probably consider that a remake too, though fans would think that's weird and that they're full of crap if they can't see a difference in the game like that

    • @crestofhonor2349
      @crestofhonor2349 3 месяца назад +1

      Link's awakening is a remake because it doesn't run off of anything from the old game. It's why Mario RPG is a remake too. It's not just about how faithful it is

    They better ONLY remaster Windwaker and Twilight princess for Switch/S2 ( maybe weave in cut content as bonus ). I dont want them to ignore Link as a LEFT hander and switch to right hand just because " oh 80-90 of world population is righties do eff you its business " Best would be option to choose dominant arm/ sword arm f. ex. We lefties can adapt to righty characters, surely right handers can adapt to control lefty characters!😂 ANYWAY! Yupyup Remaster is a visual overhaul maybe some bug fixes/ clean up. Remake is fundamental changes+/ addition ( like cut content ) A Remastermake are Imo. Visual improvements only but also have cut content added reworked to fit the game

    A remaster will use stuff from the original game. This means like stuff like the original code is still used in the game so it's not a different game. Crisis Core Rebirth is another great example of this as they took the original code and moved it into a new engine. There are also many remasters that use the original visuals and also still change the engine. Banjo Kazooie on Xbox 360 and Golden Eye 64 on Xbox Series S|X
    Remakes never use anything from the original game. Everything is redone. That's what makes it a remake and why it has the name "Remake" because the game is remade from scratch. Remakes can be faithful or they can be a reimagining of the original game
    People get confused because they equate better visuals with new lighting to be a remake because Remakes always have better visuals than the original while remasters can either look like the original or have vastly enhanced visuals that make it seem like it was remade. This is more of the case of consumers being confused because they often times have no idea of what goes on in development and just see the final project
    Blue Point is another great remastering studio as they often take the original code and then port them into a much more modern engine. Both Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus on PS4 and PS5 are great examples of their work.

    In music, a remaster isn't necessarily "enhancing". Originally, remastering meant going back to the _master_ analogue reel to reel tapes and making a new copy for production using modern, state of the art digital equipment. It was about, ostensibly, making a new version with all the fidelity that was originally there on the master tapes, bringing to life all the sound (information) that was there but couldn't be presented on the old technology.

    Can you do one between reboot and reimagining for nintendo because they handle that differently as well.
    An obvious one is Metroid ZERO mission which is classified as a reimagining by nintendo but it did not at all reboot the series. Even Star Fox ZERO. Contrary to popular belief, nintendo never once said that it was a reboot but just a reimagining of the first game. Miyamoto was even considering calling it Star Fox 6.

  • @bradfisher22

    “Remaster” in music is actually more specific than that. After a song (multitrack) is mixed down to a stereo mix, it’s sent off to a mastering engineer to correct overall issues and bring the final level up to spec for whatever medium is in question.
    So, a remaster means that someone dug out the old stereo mix and literally mastered the song(s) again for a new medium or just because they wanted it to sound better.

  • @MageBurger

    Remasters fundamentally change the appearance of the game, and at most have quality of life gameplay or story changes/additions.
    Remakes change the gameplay/plot in a major way while retaining the core components of the game such as characters/locations for it to still be considered as a version of the original.

    If you're going to use the remaster definition from movies and music then it's very clear. The only proof that you're showing is proof that people use the words however they interpret it for their own needs. While it may be accurate to a point, it is defined clearly.
    Taking the source code and digitally processing it to be better is a remaster.
    Adding or changing anything is a rework or remake music would call it a remix.
    If you take the source code and digitally improve it and then add or change anything even if only to enhance would be a remaster that is then redone in some way. So technically an hd remake.
    If they want to call is a remaster when there's changes or additions that's fine, but that's not proof of being correct... it only proof of how they want to view it.
    It changes nothing and really not a huge deal. But words are words and they are defined. We can't just pick and choose how to use them to suit our needs and it makes it correct

    My personal delineation between remaster and remake is that a remake cannot have the original code running underneath. The game has to be remade from the ground up. If it’s not, that’s fine and it still has value, but it’s just a thorough remaster.

  • @Nobody-sp7ug
    @Nobody-sp7ug 3 месяца назад

    It's all marketing bullshit. They are all remakes or literally ports being run through a translation layer.
    If you want to know what a Remaster actually is, learn what a master and the mastering process is.
    If you aren't literally using the exact same old premastered assets to literally make a new master off the exact same work station assets that were used to create the old original master, it's not a remaster.

    Remake skyward sword but make it about the goddess hylia. Have her inspired by ghibili specificly Princess Mononoke again. Make it a story about din nyru and farore. Show demise cursing the gerudo for helping hylia. Just saying redesigns and enhancements of some of the series best dungeons and bosses
    Even if it's one of the least favorable of the series which arguably is also why it needs a remake. I mean can you imagine what could be done with the lanyru desert ocean

    I agree & disagree just based on various examples we've had.
    A "remake" used to mean a complete visual overhaul, often with additional content. That's it.
    A "remaster" meant visual enhancements, yet still the same game beat for beat. Every location is the same, the NPCs are the same, the gameplay is the same, the story is the same, etc. but now with enhanced visuals befitting modern platforms.
    Problem is modern "remakes" have sometimes used these words interchangeably or drastically chamged what we used to expect.
    Final Fantasy 7 Remake is one example. It's basically an entirely new game, barely a "remake" at all.
    Look at Crash or Spyro Trilogies. They're remakes that only change the visuals & leave everything else intact. They're the same games top to bottom, only with redone graphics. Same thing with Mario RPG.
    But then you have games like Xenoblade Chronicles DE & Metroid Prime Remaster that also fit that description, yet they're considered remasters? Metroid Prime's visuals are completely overhauled... these aren't GC textures, geometry, lighting, etc. and Xenoblade even changed its art style & UI.
    RE4 changed its gameplay & visuals, as well as adding a lot of new content. Paper Mario TTYD changed its visuals but the rest of the game is the same beat for beat.
    But then you have games like Tales of Symphonia, Chrono Cross, FFVIII, SMT Nocturne, Baten Kaitos 1 & 2, etc that are all "remasters," but they're just HD ports upscaled & made widescreen.
    I think "remakes" should be a wide spectrum of games that simply means completely new visuals + any other improvements.
    "Remasters" should just be enhanced ports made for modern platforms with visual improvements but nothing else substantial beyond that.

    • @crestofhonor2349
      @crestofhonor2349 3 месяца назад

      Nah I disagree. Crash and Spyro are remakes because they are entirely remade. How faithful they are doesn't matter.
      Just because a game is in a new engine with new assets doesn't qualify them as a remake. The original code is still there so the game is going to feel pretty much the same, just with shiny new visuals. Yes a remastered game can be as simple as a port with a higher resolution or it can be put in a new engine with the same code
      That's why RE2-4 Remake are remakes because they use nothing from the original games whereas Metroid Prime uses original stuff like the code
      The term remake should stay for any game built entirely from the ground up. That's why they're called remakes because the game is entirely remade.
      Remastered should stay for any game that uses the original code and then enhanced
