The fact that it gives a player discretion in the start about depression and phobias, I like to think that this actually takes place in the mind of the person. The house is the main characters mind and thoughts and he constantly thinks lesser of himself and you the player are forcing him to do better and to get over the obstacles that get in the way that kind of enable the depression. I’m not sure but this game is really deep and quite a theory to go off of the real meaning.
Another reason I believe it’s in the mind is because of how deep and dark the basement goes. It goes so deep you can’t even handle it, it just swallows you whole and essentially kills you. When you’re being watched in the attic, you can’t handle the pressure of other peoples opinions you start going crazy until your thoughts kill you because you think they’re all dissing you. And when you’re in the mirror trying to make yourself presentable, he thinks how he’ll never look good despite his efforts.
And finally the bed part where that black thing destroys you, it stops him from being able to sleep. Maybe that lump are more black dark thoughts and keep him awake and make it hard for him to sleep. Him killing it, helps progress towards happiness but killing some of the awakening thoughts that keep him up at night.
Any depressed persons goal is to find some kind of light. Some kind of relief and that’s the whole goal in the game. To find the fresh air. It takes a lot of work even though, getting yourself ready and eating breakfast is no rocket science or intense workout, it’s insanely difficult for people who suffer depression because constantly when they wake Up, the first thought majority of the time is what is even the point. Is it even worth it? When the inner thoughts said “most people give up on the happy ending” it refers to people with depression who just don’t see the point of it. And if you’re dedicated to making it to the happy ending then it’s a job well freaking done.

This is a pretty accurate representation of agoraphobia, imo, as someone who recovered from it. Everything is dangerous, even the normal, everyday things. When I first watched Markiplier play this, it made me realize how often the gruesome thoughts that would invade my mind whenever I was doing typical things (like cooking) were linked to my anxiety and agoraphobia. It blew my mind. I thought it was just me not having as much control over other issues I have. Also, the fact Kubz Scouts talked about agoraphobia at the end of his video. What I really appreciate is that all three of you dissected important parts of the game and touched on the topic of depression. Like you Ryan figuring out the narrator was the self-deprecating thoughts super quickly. I appreciate all of you! 💖 Thank you for playing this game. More people need to be aware of what it's like to be in the head of someone with depression, anxiety, and agoraphobia.

I love this game because it uses visuals to represent the different feelings of depression, without actually telling the player. Amazing way of portraying depression. As well as how the inner monologue is so aggressive and angry, and how it starts pleading whenever you’re about to leave the house but then end up getting back in bed “somethings just aren’t that simple” meaning no matter how the person tries, no matter how persistent you are, depression isn’t something you can just get rid of easily. The dev made this game in such a perfect way, I love it, it’s awesome

  • @bladesharpe2075
    @bladesharpe2075 2 года назад +15

This game is a rather interesting one to me. I indeed felt a need to "comment" or write down my opinion on the subject.
It does a damn good job at symbolising what I assume, many peoples depression is like, It hit close to home. The voice that constantly judges, the anxiety of trying to go outside, the idea that when people look at you, they see filth and a loser, someone who doesn't try, or have any effort into their life.
It does a good job at showing one how to get better, even if only a little. I have found that by being supported, and doing something as "small" as cleaning up my living space, and myself in general, it makes a big difference, even if it doesn't seem like it to begin with. It also doesn't do the same as many other games or shows trying to grasp the concept. Just because you did one good thing, doesn't mean that is permanently fixed. Its hard to keep things up, I find myself struggling to keep my place clean, or myself for that matter. "why bother" "It's not like it matters anyway" "I'll do it tomorrow"
But even if its not a big step, its a step in the right direction. Wash your face. Brush your teeth, have a glass of water, make your bed. Something like that will, even if not apparent at the beginning. Make a huge difference. That's my own experience with anxiety and depression... not all of it, of course. It was what was on my mind however.
There is always tomorrow, but that doesn't mean you can't start today.

It's peculiar how one can breeze so much easier when isolated, then when out in the world. Some people work so hard to try and leave their bed, to try and leave their home, but it feels like hell to them. Their happiness is in seclusion.

Here's what I think Shut In is about.
We are playing as a depressed young adult. The house they wander through isn't actually in the state we see it's in. Though it is a parallel of the main character's actual home, it's also a representation of their brain, and each room has its own meaning.
The bedroom, a place where the main character feels safe. A place they'd rather spend their entire day in, just sleeping or playing video games.
They're malnourished because they have barely eaten anything.
Their breath stinks because they haven't brushed their teeth for who knows how long.
Their hair is a mess and their face is dirty because they didn't take any time to take care of themselves.
All because they've been sleeping and playing video games all day.
The bedroom represents the part of the main character's brain that gives them a feeling of safety and euphoria, but the thought of having to be productive eats away at them, which is why they "die" when they don't get out of bed.
Death in this game just means that the main character failed to do a task and doesn't see a second chance for an option, so they figure they'll just try again tomorrow.
This is clearly connected with agoraphobia, the fear of being in situations where escape might be difficult or that help wouldn't be available if things go wrong.
The hallway is mundane. Just a pass-through.
The music is low-pitched and doesn't really evoke any type of emotion.
The rot and grime represents the lack of maintenance on this part of the brain, a theme we see in the majority of other rooms as well.
The hallway probably represents the largest part of the brain. The thing that holds all the other components together.
The bathroom is filthy and looks like it hasn't been used in ages.
The mirror is cracked and the shower is covered in grime.
Ironically, the toilet is the cleanest thing in the bathroom, because it hasn't been neglected like the rest of the bathroom.
The main character would frequently come here just to take a leak or defecate, then head straight back to the bedroom.
The kitchen is filthy, of course, and the majority of it isn't even real, much like the hallway outside of it.
The microwave is just "a plastic box". The doors and lights in the kitchen and hallway outside are drawings.
The real image has been forgotten. The main character hasn't been here in forever.
The things the main character remembers are clear. The rest of it is faint images quite literally scribbled into the picture.
Even the front door is just a hazy scribble. The main character hasn’t been outside in who knows how long.
The cooking pot on the stove boils aggressively. It's another task that has been neglected, and it's almost literally screaming to be completed.
The chains on the fridge are connected to the main character's malnourishment.
They haven't opened it in so long that it has seemingly become inaccessible by now.
The TV-room is unsettling. Furniture is hanging above the floor, suspended by chains.
I'm not sure what this represents. Perhaps the chains represent the main character attempting to strip the ability to watch TV for hours away from them in order to be more productive.
The knife, however, might be connected to the main character self-harming themselves.
    "I like sharp things."
The "opposite" bedroom, the one with the red light, shows what the bedroom from upstairs actually is.
The main character has seen their bedroom as a comfort-zone up until this point.
The unsettling version of the bedroom makes them realise it was all an illusion.
The music here is a twisted, unsettling version of the music playing in the bedroom upstairs.
The infinite hallway represents the character succumbing to their depression, getting lost in their thoughts.
The plant represents some sort of responsibility. Something the main character has to take care of so it, in time, grows and blooms.
Something productive, something other than sleeping or playing video games.
The storage room represents the main character's memories and trauma.
All tucked away in one room, with a boarded-up door, in an attempt to forget.
But to truly be happy, the main character has to confront the room and the things inside.
It's unsettling inside, though. Dozens of eyes are staring right at the main character.
They feel as if confronting their trauma was a bad idea. Quite literally, all eyes are on them right now. Judging them.
If they procrastinate, the eyes get angry.
The basement and "deep dark" is a trap.
The main character descends too deep into the abyss.
Not to confront it, but to embrace it.
The red trapdoor is a way out. A leap into the void.
    A descent into nothingness.
    Suicide, I reckon.
The front door is a rushed escape. The main character's quick way out, to get away from their responsibilities.
By going through the door, they only procrastinate even more.
They figure they'll just try again tomorrow.
The mirror room contains mirrors, all broken but one.
This room represents the main character's self-loathing.
They don’t want to look at themselves anymore, because they’re a mess. They won’t bother do anything about it, though.
    “What’s the point?”
The attic is empty and blank. The main character comments that "it can use some decoration."
The music here is calming and comforting.
This room represents the main character's current situation. Something they'll have to make the most of. With the right amount of work, it'll be a happy place, letting the main character know that perhaps things aren't all that bad after all.
Let's talk about the inner voice.
When it speaks, it sounds like clanging metal.
The sound of clanging metal is loud. A sound that's impossible to ignore, impossible to filter out.
The inner voice is like the sound of clanging metal. Impossible to ignore.
And time and time again, it belittles the main character.
Time and time again, it tries to avert the main character from their task.
    "You should take a rest."
And when the main character completes a small task, the voice talks down on them.
Making them feel as if they wasted valuable time.
The main character keeps ignoring the voice, which is a good thing... for the most part.
In the 2 "bad endings", those being the front door and basement ending, the main character ignores the voice too much. It tries to talk them out of giving up, even though it encouraged them to do so before.
The voice changes its mind at the very last moment, even in the "good ending", the attic ending.
The voice realises the same thing the main character does.
Perhaps things aren't so bad after all.

I interpered the whole geting fresh air as finally being alive and just being happy once again, but if you force yourself to feel good that you ONLY want to feel good it will only lead to the bad side, because you are trying to escape it. By taking care of yourself and understanding self worth, revealing the painful memories and sorting them out you go back to those unwanted emotions and if you can deal and accept them, then you will be allowed to breath the air, because all emotions have a purpose, ussually the painful ones have a dire need for change or being felt and accepted. You might also think that the "door" will save you and have fresh air, just like - "if only I had enough money" or something like that, it might be nice, but, more or less, not the solution.
And the thoughts or the inner monologe, why is it so rude is because it's just trying to protect you from some of the unwanted stuff, but why so rude, why not say it nicely? Because in theory it is better to expect the worst and be suprised by kindness in a way trying to protect, but as you know it can lead to cognitive distortions of always thinking that the worst will happen and in the long run can be really bad so changing that thinking can help out a lot.
So, for the inner monologe, it seems that the non-enjoyable emotions are seen as a threat in that case.
Anyways that's at least my theory on this, have a great day ;>

When I was in the 3rd grade I was diagnosed clinically depressed and I have never seen such a good representation for how I felt until I watched this game. Your inner voice does make u feel worthless (at least in my experience) it tells u not to bother anyone, not to let anyone close cause ur unworthy, and then u just don’t feel like u can do anything right cause what’s the point I like to refer to it as my darkness a never ending void that tried many times to swallow me whole. I loved watching Ryan play this game because I hope so many people can share their own story when watching this and bring awareness.

The secret ending is a variation of "never bite off more than you can chew." When trying to make changes in your life, the most debilitating and destructive thing you can do is try to change many things at once. Everyone does it, and it and it always backfires; you wind up as bad, if not worse, than when you started.
You cleaned yourself up, and had something to eat. That is enough. No one is expecting you to move mountains in one day.

Okay, this proooobably won’t be read by him, unless others agree with me perhaps? Oh well, it’s worth a shot.
You should DEFINITELY play “In sound mind” (currently free on epic games) it’s a really cool horror game, with a fantastic soundtrack, composed by none other than Yoav Landau and Sam Haft, more well known as:
    The Living Tombstone.
I’ve started to play it myself, which is something I wouldn’t normally do, I don’t really play horror games, but so far, it’s BRILLIANT.

Yeah at 50 it looks like you found he11 by going deeper into your mind instead of outside. I KNEW you didn't water that plant I thought I missed it lol Maybe it's b.c I play a lot of point and clicks or that I love gardening but the wateringcan is always a first go to for me in a clicker. The eyes seem like the outside world or your own mind watching you as you try to do better by clearing up your head and taking care of your mental health and physical health. This game was great, Thank you!
