@@jennyfromdablock1735 the higher mammals have emotions, and on a basic level so do many other animals. They spend most of their time in larger aquariums that are filled with things to replicate their natural surroundings. I went to: octolab.tv
Julia Milford - That is true. I wonder if that’s out of boredom or if he prefers hiding out a lot. It would be nice to see a video of their little habitats to see what they have around them for enrichment.
Julia Milford their website clearly explains. They have a normal habitat aquarium and this in the video is a test aquarium. Where they only spend hours at a time... so it’s not like they are bored forever
This is utterly fascinating! At first I thought, "Poor Arnold. That's kind of mean to him." But he seems to like having stuff in his barrel. Sort of interior decorating, as it were. :) And aren't octopi incredibly graceful? Since I can literally trip over a coffee stain on the rug, I really admire grace.
OK, I knew octopuses were intelligent, but this is something else. It was almost as if Arnold realised, when his barrel was filled with those little pale grey bricks, that he could move stuff in and out. To me it looked as if, at first, he tried to remove the bricks, but there was too many, so he shifted enough to let him squeeze his body in. Then he tried to block the open end up with the tiles. As for the black plastic basket like thing, well, whatever it is used for, he wanted it inside his barrel
Fascinating! It's almost like he makes a conscious choice to like it to spite you for doing an experiment on him. Somewhere between a Bowerbird and a human toddler! Reminded me of the coconut carrying octopuses.
Congratulations, Octolab, you created the first octohoarder 🐙🛒 🤗 The octopus was fairly smart. I first thought it was going to push the small blocks out of the barrel. It was hilarious when it yanked off the aquarium filter. Finally, I imagined it thinking "Score!" as it added the large tiles, perhaps for a smooth floor or for a door to shut out the riff raff that trashed its home.
I find it so amazing they have such complete control over every single one of their suction cups. Like the amount their brain has to process to do that is incredible. Such a simple thing but it blows my mind.
ive heard that each of their tentacles basically have a brain of their own, and they cant send feedback to the main brain about the position of the tentacles, so they have to literally be able to watch what they're doing to get anything done. That's probably why they frequently go some distance away from what they were doing; to get an overview.
I like how Arnold starts with trying to empty his barrel, realizes who did this to his barrel, then sends a message about messing with his barrel.

2. It seemed to me that Arnold's first thought was, "I need a vacuum cleaner to clear this crap out. That tube thing over there has magic suction properties for whatever reason. I'll use that." He then attempted to drag the tube over there but it broke instead. He hoped maybe he only needed that piece and could figure out a way to activate it somehow. When that didn't work, he thought it might come in handy. At some point he had gone from betrayal and annoyance at the changes to MacGuyver.
3. The video cut off early, but it looked like he was going to experiment with building a door with the panel, or otherwise, maybe using it to shovel out the blocks. Does that resemble what happened after the video cuts off?
Thanks!
You are humanizing its behavior. It is just making its barrel more secure for potential predators, there are not emotions at all. Don't worry.
@@jeffbac1889 - How do u know? Cats & dogs have emotions. I watched my cousin's catch get revenge a wk later after she messed w/him. She walked past the stairs & he jumped on her head & started f*cking her up Nobody saw it coming. Funny as hell.
First, he tried to extend his domain by grading a platform of displaced blocks. Then he put a nice, smooth tile between himself and all those glued together blocks. Then he went for a door that will double as a slide once he figures out how to move some more blocks.
@@jennyfromdablock1735 the higher mammals have emotions, and on a basic level so do many other animals. But, their experience and perceptions of the world is different from ours, so you cannot read or apply human emotion and logic into the animal behavior and assume it is the same as yours. That is not to say again, they are not experiencing these emotions, but, it has a completely different meaning and context for them. This is something we will have to take into consideration if we were to ever meet an intelligent species from another planet. We will not be able to assume that intelligent alien species is feeling, perceiving, and thinking the same as us. There are quite a few episodes of Star Trek that deals with this subject. To answer your question "how do you know' we know because scientists and psychologists have been studying animal behavior and contrasting it with human behavior for decades.
At about 1:28 just before the Arnold starts taking apart the filter Arnold quickly flashes black like that was the exact moment he got pissed.
I’m intrigued he can control his suction cups individually. Amazing animal
They have a rudimentary brain in each arm to control them
This behavior test is actually on the humans outside the box but Arnold just hasn't told them yet
Haha good one 😂
This music is a perfect complement to Arnold's carefree bachelor lifestyle.
The music was composed by Arnold himself
@@hyperion3145 Arnold has some surprisingly good production values! Lol
Tranquil Rabies
Indeed, when he isn’t ripping baby bottles in half he likes to walk through the woods and read poetry... Of squirrels.
Tranquil Rabies ahahahahahahahha

I hope that when you’re not observing him or others you have them in a more stimulating home
No, it appears they keep him in this blank tank 24. If they know octopuses are so smart not sure why they would build a better ecosystem for him...
This is just a testing tank. Arnold has a much better home tank with more places to hide (if he wants), plants, and other things.
@@diannamallar1155 I would really enjoy watching him hide plants!
snocookies - How do you know? Do you have facts, or are you merely assuming the worst?
@@tiltil9442 So would I. That would be quite the trick. Lol
Oops, that's what happens when your brain moves faster then your fingers. You tend to forget your commas. Lol.
I was shocked when the hand appeared for a scale comparison. I was all thinking about this big octopus and here is this monstrous hand coming in :) Absolutely adorable, I could watch this all day :)
“You gonna screw with my stuff, I’m gonna build a G-d damned fort.”
I don't think I've ever thought of an octopus as adorable until now...but it is!
I find myself scrolling through the comments much like I would on reddit when it comes to these type of videos.
Sometimes the comments are more enlightening than the text in the video
Same here
Yes!!!
He's trying to use the white squares to build a door to keep the humans out of his house.
Vercessany Imani
I don’t blame him. At all.
They're so smart. It breaks my heart that they are still killed for food.
This is really amazing footage thanks for sharing. Can’t believe how smart he is
I love how these creatures can actually give you sass and you can realize it.
I showed this video to my octopus and it clicked the thumbs up.
😅😂👍👍
I so wish I had an octopus. I have loved them as my favorite marine creature for decades. They are amazing.
Eight times.
@@silverdollarswede151 LOL. Good one!
@@czechraiser "and it would hug me and hug me and hug me and hug me and hug me and hug me and hug me and hug me!" Quote from *My Pet Octopus*, my grandson's favorite book.
Almost looks like Arnold is trying to make a door for his barrel with the tiles!
I'd just love the opportunity to work with these amazing creatures, they seem to possess this awe of superiority, I just can't resist it. What an amazing creature these animals are, same with cuttlefish.
Arnold is now installing smoother floor and procured a defensive weapon.
Damn neighbors, can't go for a stroll anymore!
Reaching for the filter was so cute! I love this channel because of the peaceful music and text narration.
Also...can we all agree to stop eating them? 🙃
The reason that he spends most of his time in the barrel is because there's NOTHING else to do!
Jacob Crowthorne - I had that same concern as well, so I checked out their website and found out they only put them in the bare “testing tank” for short periods of time each day. They spend most of their time in larger aquariums that are filled with things to replicate their natural surroundings. I went to: octolab.tv
@@DaffneyDalilah thanks! That's great to know!
Jacob Crowthorne - You’re welcome! 🐙💗💕
Julia Milford - That is true. I wonder if that’s out of boredom or if he prefers hiding out a lot. It would be nice to see a video of their little habitats to see what they have around them for enrichment.
Octopuses are a yummy snack for bigger animals like seals, so spending a lot of time inside their safe hole is probably normal.
Looks like the most depressing aquarium ever😢
They're only placed in those aquariums for the tests. Once it's over, ie they see how he behaves, they get placed back into a regular aquarium.
@@diltzm
Glad to hear it.....leave him in this boring old tank he's so intelligent he'd go insane
Julia Milford their website
Highly intelligent creatures being kept in captivity like this must be so painful for them... Imagine solitary confinement
Julia Milford their website clearly explains. They have a normal habitat aquarium and this in the video is a test aquarium. Where they only spend hours at a time... so it’s not like they are bored forever
I was always unsure about whether or not the octopus could see the people recording them and this somewhat cleared that up for me!
I'd let Arnold remodel my lounge. He's a talented interior designer.
Come home, find 2 broken tiles and a small pile of foam blocks in a corner of your house 😂😂
Wasn't it Arnold that said, "every room is a jeweled box" I always get him confused with someone like Edna St. Vincent Millay.
Alolan Vulpix Getting Railed the fuck?
OK, I knew octopuses were intelligent, but this is something else. It was almost as if Arnold realised, when his barrel was filled with those little pale grey bricks, that he could move stuff in and out. To me it looked as if, at first, he tried to remove the bricks, but there was too many, so he shifted enough to let him squeeze his body in. Then he tried to block the open end up with the tiles. As for the black plastic basket like thing, well, whatever it is used for, he wanted it inside his barrel
After the block incident: Arnold is now a Candidate for A&E's Hoarders.
Octopuses are so beautiful and intelligent!
Thank you for sharing the video of Arnold💙 & his barrel
Fascinating! It's almost like he makes a conscious choice to like it to spite you for doing an experiment on him. Somewhere between a Bowerbird and a human toddler! Reminded me of the coconut carrying octopuses.
3:51 Hey I was using that! Give it BACK!!! Thank you...
Congratulations, Octolab, you created the first octohoarder 🐙🛒 🤗
The octopus was fairly smart. I first thought it was going to push the small blocks out of the barrel. It was hilarious when it yanked off the aquarium filter.
Finally, I imagined it thinking "Score!" as it added the large tiles, perhaps for a smooth floor or for a door to shut out the riff raff that trashed its home.
Arnold: "You screw with my barrel I screw with your hardware!"
I love how he steps back and analyze the situation. Oh and that "This is for messing up my barrel human." LMAO
It was so cute the way he was gathering up the tiles! LOL
He likes the feeling of the smooth tile on his pads. I can relate.
In the end, he only wanted some privacy
Fascinating. I absolutely love the problem solving skills
Omg! He knew! He was all pissed at you for doing this, he's sick of you filming him he made a door
3:50 I love how he reaches to grab the thing before it gets taken away
3:52 I ... feel like I can hear him scream
"NO" and then mutter curses at the human
Arnold's Book of Grudges gets a few extra pages
I think he broke that thing in anger, that is so cute.
It’s amazing to see a living being with 9 brains, each working individually, still maintain a singular goal. My one mind is blown 😮
Humans: *Fills barrel*
Arnold: “So its gonna be like that huh?” *Proceeds to break and hoard filter and tiles*
