Good morning Dave. now that is a great suggestion. i know you can get the hand held ones that trimmers use for window fitting. but yes great idea. many thanks for the suggestion. i will put it my christmas list and we shall see. thanks again all the best Tony.
The hut looks like it is on the platform in the photos, but I prefer on the ballast at end of the ramp Tony. Good build & love the way you got the roof smoothed out.
hello David. the roof was either going to make or brake this project. but it worked out alright in the end. Thank you for commenting, take care all the best Tony.
It’s a history lesson and an art lesson in one, fascinating how they utilised what they had at hand to use back in the day. Recycling isn’t nothing new. Brilliantly crafted as usual Tony, they add even more detail to what is already an exceptional layout. Thank you for sharing, stay safe and have a great weekend.
Good morning Mr Rock n Roll. Absolutely recycling was never a new thing. even as a kid we took back empty pop bottles to the shop for money back in the 70s. but now we recycle for free. and get charged for doing so. funny how things have changed. many thanks for commenting. have a great weekend cheer's Tony.
What a wonderful little building that is. Full of character like the original. Although the picture appears to have it on the platform, I do like it off the end of the ramp - on the ballast.
Good morning Rick. it a funny awkward situation have created for myself. the dilemma of where to put this hut. as you have space is at a premium. i think on the platform is the only solution. but when i come to build the other building i will be stumped. but we shall see. many thanks for commenting. take care Tony.
Thanks, Steve. will do! Its done my friend it is permanently on the platform as you will see in the next video. Thank again for commenting. cheer's Tony.
Its Definitely at end of platform ramp down to lineside. Look and stop video at 4.04, you can see loco's buffer beam would be just above platform height which would indicate that base of hut would be 3 to 4 foot lower than that. The two huts look a lot closer to the station building than they really are is because the photo was probably taken some distance away using a telephoto lens, which would compress the buildings to make them all look closer together. Great Build, nice to see traditional modeling methods used, instead of Laser cutters and 3D printers which are taking away the magic of creating something using brain power and hand crafting skills today. Well Done Tony👍😁
Interesting take on distances. as photos are not all that accurate with out something to gauge from. but i will certainly take your point of into account when i come to adding the other building. thanks again for commenting, as i do like this type of feed back. stay safe my friend. Tony.
A good addition to the layout all the time I was at Whitleas which was every summer holiday I think I only used Tyne dock station a handful of times used the bus most of the time. watching you build the station makes me think about the north east. Any way enough of that great video Tony I think end of the platform but if you don,t glue it down you could move it around
Good morning James. Likewise my friend. i am always thinking about south shields and all things Tyneside. as i am always looking for new possible builds. my collection of buses is growing so i am now looking for an area to build a bus depot. and i think i may have found the space to build the south shields depot. exiting times ahead. many thanks again for commenting....cheer's Tony.
Good builds again, another detail that a lot of us would miss I would place it either at the foot - off the platform - or on the platform, I think placing it in front of the signal would be wrong as it would be hidden from anyone coming out of the lamp hut, however if that is the prefered option it may require laying boards to cross the tracks towards the platform end Looking forward as always to the next episode, very interested to seeing the station progress, thanks for video
Good morning James. The census of opinion seems to be saying the same on the platform or at the end of the platform. as you know space is very tight. so i will have to make a small change to the platform to incorporate the hut and also the small building behind the hut. which to me looks like a canteen for the staff. many thanks for commenting. and we shall comment again. stay safe my friend. Tony.
Interesting conundrum, Tony! I'd be very surprised if a lamp hut was positioned on the platform of a passenger station - stations needing such a thing would have a dedivcated lamp room. Lamp huts were positioned at eplaces esaily accessible to railway staff but inpositions that did not interfere with the siglalman's view of train movements. Often they were posiyioned near othe huts in a goods yard (which does not apply here) or near a signalbox where someone is close by in case of problems. Of your three positions, the one at the end of the platform seems to be the best option as the one near the signal is really to close to the track for satety.
Hello Ken. Interesting reading your comment as i have just finished putting a platform extension in for the location of the hut, and by doing so leaves me enough room for the other shed that was in the photo. which i think was a loco crew change over cabin or canteen. All the other lamp huts have gone to very different area's of the layout. M.P.D now has one. but yes i do agree with what you are saying. lamp huts should be accessible for station staff. interesting as always reading your comments. thanks again my friend. cheer's Tony.
Nice little hut,Tony. Great detail. As usual, the small details make the realism. I think also, we should see it as a tribute to the fellas who planned and built the (probably) fire safe hut from obsolete materials . Recycling before it was trendy!!!!! As always ,best wishes for the week end!
Absolutely. I agree. a tribute would make sense. in the photo you see a what looks to be a J26 Locomotive billowing smoke and ash probably sparks as well. and these little huts had to be fire proof because what was stored inside. interesting comment. many thanks for commenting Peter. all the best Tony.
The Lamp hut's look very good, and look okay over near the wall, but obviously it's going to be your choice in the end, all the best to you and your family.
Hello John. thank you for commenting. its been decided to have the hut on the platform, but with one small difference. a small platform extension. to allow the extra space for the other hut... cheer's again. best wishes Tony.
Great build Tony. I think it would look best between the lines by the bottom of the ramp, but with a little bit more distance between it and the bottom of the ramp. George.
Aneat little build mate. In your historical photo it is on the platform as is the little white building. However, as you have your nameboard, light and garden already sited, you do not have the room for both buildings in that site. Therefore, I would go with putting it down on the area at the bottom of the ramp. Cheers. Arthur
Good morning Arthur. thanks again for commenting. The lamp post and sign can be moved and hopefully give me the space to include the small building. my problem is what was it used for. as it seems out place. but i will make room. all the best Tony.
off the end of the platform looks best - very therapeutic watch . As a window cleaner of over 50 years loved to see your man with his ‘A’ frame ladder , or ‘ half a stick’ as we call it or tap (taper) ladder. Nice modelling skills .
Thank you for commenting. These type of ladders we don't see anymore. the window cleaner on a bicycle is from a bygone age. many thanks again cheer's Tony.
One of the small details that make a big difference to the whole picture Tony. Once again, your planning and model making skill is awesome.. All the best, Chris n Jules
Hi Tony, another excellent build, the hut looks very prototypical, I think it looks good beside the signal with a walkway to the platform, although, it may be too close to passing trains. Best regards Roy
Glad you enjoyed the video Roy. i think it will end up staying near or around the platform as it is shown in the photo. Safety for the loco crew comes to mind. but yes a great topic to talk about. many thanks again. for commenting. cheer's for now Tony.
Thanks 👍David. I agree, even though i had to remake it. i was very surprised on how well the roof turned out. many thanks again my friend for commenting. cheer's Tony.
As soon as I saw the photo of the lamp hut, I thought “coffee stirrers “. I guess that shows how embedded I am in modelling now. I’m using them to create fencing at the moment. I must say, though, you have taken their use to another level in scoring them to make them thinner. Great job Tony. Always a pleasure to watch. Thanks for sharing. Roy.
Good morning Roy. you know what they say great minds think a-like. Fencing is another use for them. and i have also used them for roof rafters. who knows what else i will use coffee stirring sticks for in the future. thanks again for commenting. cheer's for now Tony.
Another interesting and factual build Tony, well done for that and many thanks for sharing it. I would place the lamp hut tight to the wall once you have removed the hedge and ground cover and as you mentioned place it on a small concrete base, this I feel would allow staff to get better access to the lamps. Cheers for now regards Barry.👍🍺
Hi Barry. i was thinking of the same as i was making the suggestion. crossing tracks Hmmm i may have to reconsider. i will have come up with a cunning plan. concrete bass and level out the ramp. hopefully that will create enough space for the other building as well. but we shall see my friend. take care and see you in the next video. cheer's Tony.
Wonderful work, Tony! Nice story behind it all, along with the vintage photographs. It is always a bit stunning how they start as bits and bobs and come together for a very realistic effect. Nicely done!
Glad you enjoyed the video Anthony. it always pays to do a little bit of research as it helps to understand what we are building. many thanks again for commenting. all the best Tony.
Great video! It's also a good display of using materials together to build things with - thoughtfulness and imagination at their very best! Sometimes we just don't think of things we can use to do our modelling with. I recently saw another site where a man was refurbishing some old Triang coaches and they had no interiors so he did something that I would never have thought of - he built the coach interiors out of cardboard using an old document binder cover to make the interiors and after painting they looked great. Placing your little hut...I think your first choice at the foot of the platform looked best. Thanks again Tony.
Good morning Alfie, That's the thing with scratch building anything is possible, its knowing how to use the right materials to do the job. and being creative. so yes anything can be achieved. take care my friend...Tony.
Thank you, you are very generous with your comment. its funny you should say that. the platform has been extended Just enough for the hut to sit on. thanks you again. cheer's Tony.
Good morning Tony. That’s a really unique construction, nice to see vertical sleepers being used complements the horizontal ones for flower beds. Do like how the super glue enabled those neat curved edges on the roof apexes to be formed; excellent. On photo is there not a stubby little ventilator chimney on the lhs corner? On gravel at the end of the station looks best to me, at least on my screen…and out of way of the passengers and not obstructing the signals. Hope you are refreshed ready to finish off that roof and canopy. We seem to have dodged a ton of snow so far as we hover around freezing, heavy frosts so unusually warm here, much welcome for our Remembrance Day parade and for the soldiers and cadets too. Just have to watch for ice every now and again! All the best and you too stay safe. Stephen
Good evening Stephen. well it is evening over here in good old blighty. The hut has been elevated at the end of the platform as you will see in the next video. the weather is about to change over here and get colder. many thanks for the parcel as it has come through today. you have beaten me to it this year. yours will be on the way soon. take care and many thanks again for your support. Tony & Laura.
@@TONYNORTHEASTERN Hi Tony and Laura, ah a compromise using the elevation - that is different - look forward to seeing and your rational! You really have quite a large collection of small buildings on the layout, in fact far more including variety than I have ever seen in layout articles in the RM and also on other utuber layouts - maybe a thought for a tour/ recap on small/ short builds e.g. pillbox, police box, girder train etc? Good to hear we are more in synch with the UK weather at this time. Thanks for letting us know and pleased to hear arrived safely and quite quickly. Canada Post are starting industrial action this Friday - you know when it’s getting near Xmas! Most folk have Xmas lights up now - job done before in serious negative temps. Take care both of you, all the best Celia and Stephen.
Very nice build Tony, but I think you may have missed the chimney on the left hand side of the photo. It is the North=East and there would have been a coal stove inside to stop stuff from freezing, so a chimney would have been attached. From what I remember of the one at South Dock in Sunderland the sleepers were painted in coal tar to preserve them and were a black colour. All the best mate.
Hello Richard. You know what i think you are right. i have looked again. this time using a magnifying class and there does seem to be a pipe of some kind. i have always thought it was a shadow from the chimney from the building behind. so looks i have to upgrade my little huts. its always great to have a fresh pair of eyes to spot these things. its does get very cold up in sunny shields. thank you for commenting. cheer's for now Tony.
Hi Tony, nice little build that mate, it’s come out really well and looks so good painted and weathered. As for the placement i guess off the end of the platform is kind of right but I actually preferred it on the other side of the track, you could put a little wooden crossing across from the end of the platform, just a thought 🤔. As usual thoroughly enjoyable, cheers for now mate, John
Good morning John. its great to hear from you. the hut will stay on the end of the platform. but with a very slight difference. i have extended the platform to accommodate the small building. cheer's for now Tony.
Again more card engineering !! What about some holes in the sleepers where the chairs sat. I think it would look good in front of the signal up against the wall with a wooden walkway across the rails to the end of the platform, only suggesting. Regards Alan :o)
Good morning Alan. Good idea. i will have have to add some tiny dabs of black paint as tiny holes will be very hard to do. even with tiny engineering skills. lol. take my friend. all the best Tony.
I think that chap by the lamp hut has his son’s Hornby 0 gauge type 40 clockwork tank engine in his hands - most likely it’s stripped a cog so he’s brought it in for a mate who’s handy with model trains to take a look at…
Hello Tony, can you just tell me what you use for the walls on your buildings is it 2mm foam type board, only you have inspired me to start making some of my own buildings (not to your standard) but Ill give it a go.regards, Colin. (great video as always).
Hi Colin, the card i use is Kraft card, you can buy it from Ebay. please be aware it can warp in cold conditions. but it is my preferred card to use. i also use 1mm card and 0.5 card. i hope this helps. and i hope you have great success with your scratch builds. cheerio for now Tony.
I think it should be at the end of the platform. Looking at the photos of the lamp hut it looks to me that there is a chimney at the back of the hut. I am not sure, but it looks like the Oil Barrel is mounted outside the hut. It make sense to have it there, Now going back to my Uncle Jack. He used to clean the oil lamps in the hut, trim or replace the wick if necessary and then take them outside to fill them up with paraffin. He would light them just before swapping them over and then put the empty ones back in the shed for tomorrow. He would then walk up the line to the next lamp hut and do the same. I do not know how many he had to do daily, but he could not go home until the last one was finished. Martin. (Thailand)🧞♂🧞♂🧞♂
Hello Martin, i agree. we shall keep it with in the realms of its historical location. as for the chimney is on the other building behind the small hut. and that another small build that i will looking into maybe later on. Uncle jack sounds like a great character, i may have to have a uncle jack on the layout. many thanks my friend for commenting. cheer's for now Tony.
I would put the hut at the end of the ramp. When did the original Tyne Dock Station open? When was it closed? Is there still a station there today? Are best to you and Laura. Bill and Janet from California
Good morning Bill & Janet. yes i agree with you about the positioning of the hut. but it does look out of place. originally yes it looks right. as there was no track at to the left. so the verdict is still out on that idea. as for the station. yes there is still a station at Tyne Dock. but its a through station with out the Island platform. as the old station was completely removed. so i have done the history opposite way round. i built the through station, pull it down and then put the island platform version back. weird or what. many thanks again for commenting. stay safe all the best Tony.
Hello and good morning Andy. Absolutely. my thoughts exactly as long as there is room for the small building that's behind the hut. take care buddy. cheer's Tony.
Absolutely by the signal, 1000%! Not on the platform, it looks out of place. Likewise, it doesnt seem to sit visually quite right at the end of the platform. Just my humble opinion though! It is your layout to do with as you please! M.
Good morning Malcom. I do like like your suggestion. but i am thinking of tinkering around the platform. and try and get some sort of historical accuracy, levelling of the ramp with a concrete base and maybe placing the hut on that. but its early days just yet. many thanks for commenting, as always they are very much appreciated. take care Tony.
You might already have one, but can I suggest investing in model making guillotine.
I worked in Ikea for five and a half years and enjoyed a coffee or two. It will be some time before I run out of stirrers! The guillotine is ideal for chopping repeatable lengths and, even when it doesn't chop right through the stirrer the resulting cut makes them easy to snap off. Obviously it's also good for plastic.
If you haven't tried it, dipping them in a vinegar/wire wool mix gives a lovely grey weathered wood finish which varies depending on the wood in the stirrer. Cheers
Good morning Dave. now that is a great suggestion. i know you can get the hand held ones that trimmers use for window fitting. but yes great idea. many thanks for the suggestion. i will put it my christmas list and we shall see. thanks again all the best Tony.

Closer examination of the picture revealed that he was on his iPhone 18! A time traveller from 2028. Surprised you missed that little detail Tony! 😊
Good morning Malcom. Love the comment. on close examination he does look like hes on a mobile phone. Lol. have a great weekend cheer's Tony.
@@TONYNORTHEASTERN Thank you Tony.
Platform every time... you wouldn't want to keep crossing the tracks just to fill your lamps which I'm guessing was it's use.
