    I can't believe how intelligent ants are! My pet big-headed ant colony has discovered agriculture. Upon examining my ant colony's ant farm island one night, I was shocked to discover that the ants were secretly farming "ant cows", mealybugs drinking from the sap of the colony's tree and excreting a sweet bi-product called 'honeydew' which the ants loved to eat and were collecting! Watch how we make this amazing discovery!

    I never knew that mealybugs were also a source of honeydew for ants. I've always herd (get it) of ants farming aphids, but never mealybugs. In fact this is the first I've heard of them. That being said literally all the info was new and fascinating to me. The millions of years of symbiosis, to the face that males and females take on such different forms.

    • @AntsCanada
      @AntsCanada  6 лет назад +166

      Yes, and the mealybugs also can feed from the roots! There are ant colonies that specialize on farming root mealybugs and depend on them so much that it's their sole food source! They never come to the surface to forage and when nuptial flight comes around each virgin queen grabs a mealybug in her mouth before flying off to mate and start her own ant colony, so she could farm her own colony of mealybugs for her colony! Isn't that amazing?! Funny enough, after the filming of this episode, suddenly all the mealybugs were gone (or they moved to another part of the tree that I can't see) but I suspect they all moved to the roots since I watered the plant a bit more than usual for filming this ep.

    • @SoundFX626
      @SoundFX626 6 лет назад +60

      AntsCanada that's super fascinating. Kinda like the ant colonies that farm fungi as their food source. The fact that they take a mealybug with then during nuptial flight really is quite an amazing testament to the evolution and intelligence of ants. I hope the bubblebutts are still around.

    • @SoundFX626
      @SoundFX626 6 лет назад +11

      TheRealAfar that's what our good friend Antscanada said. Not in the video, in his comment. Some ants rely purely on the root feeding mealybugs for food. So each queen takes one with her during nuptial flight to start her own colony of mealbugs in her new colony

    As someone who has professional greenhouse experience, I thought thought I'd give you a little disclaimer . Mealy bugs are notoriously good a spreading and their presence can cause a whole host of problems in your plants. We had an outbreak of them one year and the majority of the garden annuals developed dwarfed or sickly. And the next year even after a through check and sanitization by hand of all plants they still came back. All I'm saying is to watch them and maybe get a head of them so this doesn't happen to any of the other colonies.

    I think that the ants are actually massaging the bugs with their antennae, since this likely increases their honeydew production. Dairy farmers have also realized that this works with cows, and so many of them have giant, spinning brushes installed in their barns, so the cows can just walk up and get a massage wherever they feel like it. Apparently, it can increase milk production by up to 25%!

      @1998floris 6 лет назад +9

      Yes, its really interesting. I read a research report the other day about those spinning things. Apparently the cows were willing to put as much effort in getting a backscratch as in getting food.

    • @tomabenas964
      @tomabenas964 6 лет назад +7

      It improves mood, and in some cases overall health of the cows leading to an increase in milk production. Also permitting the cows to choose when they want to be milked also allows us to get better, cleaner, and bigger product loads from cows. Magic

    I just want to say that unless it's just the lights, your banyan tree is lacking nutrients, likely phosphorus. Chlorosis, or yellowing of plant leaves, indicated a lack an essential nutrient, usually one that's involved in the production of chlorophyll. As it's the young leaves that are yellow, the nutrient that's lacking must be one that has low mobility. As the tree's being fed on, it'd be a good idea to give it regular small amounts of fertilizer just to keep it healthy.

    • @AntsCanada
      @AntsCanada  6 лет назад +10

      Definitely giving the tree fertilizer. Actually the leaves are now the same colour as the rest of the plant. They really were just fresh from the bud during filming.

    - Ant Condominium for Small Colonies. Different species per floor.
    - Hang the Island of Avista.
    - More Ant Bite Wednesdays
    - More Species (Ghost Ants, Destructor Ants, Harvester Ants, etc). AC Council should decide what to keep first.
    - Completely Transparent Soilless Nest (with just coverings for the ants convenience). Species should be easy to keep in captivity.
    - Have one those mini models of houses or condos which is covered in glass. Modify it by adding a layer of soil under it. Make sure that the surface of the setup is soilless to make it look like ants replaced humans. Just leave a place where soil is exposed for food, water, sanitation, and cleaning.
    - Underwater setup. With a little island as access for food and everything. The ant nest underwater should not be filled with soil. An ant terrarium underwater.
    - Framed Colony. Have a closed setup of glass terrarium filled with soil with very thin sides so that you can hang it to the wall like a very large portrait with only 1 tube connected to an outworld for food and cleaning. Make sure the setup is made sturdy to hold the weight of the soil. Put also an opening for soil hydration. You can cover it with something like Ant Flags Poster or the Ant Map for the ants convenience.

    Gosh it’s cute to see mealybugs as “ant cows” but goddamn do I hate those things! They attack my orchids constantly no matter what I do and have killed quite a few of of my plants. Ugh. Glad to see someone can appreciate the horrible little beasties!
    Edit: make sure you keep them in check because they can do some serious, fatal damage to plants and once they get established it’s almost impossible to get rid of them completely. Luckily they’re easy to squish. I like to use a pokey stick dipped in alcohol, especially because they like to live in deep, hard to reach crevices. They turn a weird reddish brown as soon as the alcohol hits them. It’s really gross but satisfying to see them cease to be a threat! Eww.

Natural repellents did nothing. Even pulling them off by hand was ineffective, because the ants had some hidden cache and would just bring out more the next morning.

    Some times I wonder if the ants see you as a omnibenevolent God. When I say that I don't mean do you count as their God, or whether you feel like a God, as in do the Ants even consider entertaining the thought that they should be grateful to you, or worship you. Do they run from your hand because they don't know that it only brings benefits, or do they fear you like the Greeks feared Zeus. Do they think you're just another predator or they see you as a higher, more worthy being. Has an ant ever tried to make a sacrifice to you, heck, has an ant ever tried to thank you with their pheromones. These are all questions that we may never know the answer to for no reason other than "because we can't talk to them", but with the thousands upon thousands of ants, you just gotta wonder, if one, just one, has called you God.

    It has been recorded not to long ago but ants do make noises like squeaking sort of sounds. Not sure if they use this to communicate as well or for warning I'm not sure but does make sense most creatures do make noises of some type.

    I wonder if there is some way to make enough honeydew that I could get ants to become my traveling companions while I roam around in my yard to. They could keep gnats away from me while I am in the yard. I wish my eyesight wasn't going bad. I finally find something so great and educational as this channel and now astigmatism decides to show up. I spent the first half of my life with nearsightedness and now I can't see anything without holding it at arm's length, except on my TV screen. I have my computer hooked up to the TV screen and now in UHD. I absolutely love your videos now being in UHD. I am going to keep watching them as long as you keep making them or as long as I can still see, and maybe even just listen and imagine after. I still want to learn more about ants and your enthusiasm is infectious, in a good way.
    Have you ever tried or thought about beekeeping? I find them fascinating as well. Their social systems seem very similar in a lot of cases. I would love to learn how similar their matriarchal systems really are and how those systems differ, at least overall. I know there are so many species of both that there will be big differences in some cases. Depending on the species of each, I'm sure any comparison would be as far apart as apples to oranges. Or would it?
    I wish I had had this channel when I was a kid and constantly asking questions no one knew the answer to. They always just said kill whatever I was fascinated with in the insect world. Nope. Not if I can help it. They are far too entertaining to kill them just for being there.

    I wonder if there are any universities, entomologists, or myrmecologists watching these videos with baited breath. I like to imagine there’s a small community of professionals using AntsCanada footage for discoveries/understanding. (At the very least, it’s educational for laymen!)
    Perhaps that’s idealistic, but AntsCanada is without a doubt the prime source on RUclips. I can’t imagine there’s much footage out there unless a specific study has set it up themselves.

      Ant Scientists have their own colonies. They do nothing else but study ants all day every day .
      Plus they have state of arts cameras and tons of other equipment. They even glue microchips to individual ants to track them and do other ridiculous things.
      Thats how governments spend our taxes ^^
      Antscanada is just RUclips channel with good production and clickbaity titles, hes not doing anything groundbreaking ^^ H refers to himself as god in every video, you dont need to boost his ego even more. ^^

    • @GotInterest
      @GotInterest 6 лет назад +3

      Actually one of his ant colonies was a rarely studied species of ants and he was able to make a couple of small new discoveries about them to give to an entomologist friends of his. He doesn’t have that colony anymore because they escaped :( but it was cool while it lasted.

    "Alright! There is a meal worm stuck at the entrance! Get some soldiers to support the workers!"
    "Who's on nightshift for the cattle!"
    "I'll do it!"
    "Great, make sure to put it in your social stomach this time"
    "On it"
    "I'm back from my shift"
    "Excellent, go to the resting chambers and get ready for tomorrow"

    Although chloride salts are common in almost all water, most bottled water is bottled from tap. You'd be better off running the water through a britta filter or other activated carbon filter first, keeping in mind to rinse the initial loose carbon from the filter before using the water that comes through it.

    • @nicolepettit5120
