  • Growing succulents in NY (indoors and outdoors). Today I'm looking into a couple of succulents with potential root or pest issues.

7:46 Pachyveria angel fingers, might get a bit more color on leaf tips following the pachyphytum parent. Size of the pot looks good, hope it starts growing again after the hot weather ☀️

I had this problem with some new succulents I bought (the black spots on the inner parts of the leaves attachedto the stem). They were on sale because the seller said she had given them to someone to sell for her but they didn't take good care of them. When I looked online, I saw that it could be some type of mold or fungus. I sparyed them about a week ago with a fungicide/ bacteriacide and the symptoms have subsided (yellow mushy leaves, leaves falling etc). The black spots are still there but they aren't spreading. Hope this was helpful

I feel are that the roots are getting suffocated due to the mesh at the bottom this is aloso compacting the soil and I know this coz I experienced the same with some succs instead use a mesh with bigger holes instead.
Also having a extra gritty mix could be a barrier to roots as they are just hair like structures and can't penetrate the grain compacted as one.
Hence ,what I would suggest and it's just me☺️ is trim the roots ...the fine ones , let it callous for 3 days and plant it in dry soil soil consisting of 70 percent potting soil and the remaining grit say bonsai jack .
Use lava rock, though heavy, as dressing if need be.
And for knats or pest on the surface use food grade, Diatomaceous earth sprinkled liberally on the surface...works great for mealey bugs, mites spiders.
    I hope this helps🙏

It’s funny that you mention the mesh. This was a batch I bought previously and I did notice that a few of my dead succulents had this mesh. Since then I have bought a different mesh that has bigger holes but I didn’t bother using them in this repot. Thanks for mentioning that! I will definitely get rid of these mesh for sure. Sometimes you get this gut feeling and somewhere along the way you forget them! Oy vay!
I get nervous about trimming roots in the summer but I may have to. My onslow lost more leaves since this video so I potted into a nursery pot. I can’t remember if I trimmed the roots. I’ll have to take a look. Thank you for all your great suggestions. 🥰

Don't worry you have lovely looking Succulents.
Trimming the roots will not cause any problems Just keep em in a spot that recieves indirect bright light after training and don't water immediately , wait for say 3 days
If it's convenient for enough, you can try to make the soil less gritty and use pumice stone as a part of the grit as it's light and amazing with soaking up water.
Take care and thank you for sharing 🙏
