  • ALS symptoms can be very difficult to explain in the beginning.
Kevin Swan was diagnosed with ALS in February of 2012. Within a couple of months of diagnosis, he left his job as Director of Communications for SingleHop, a rapidly growing Infrastructure Service Provider, and founded A Life Story Foundation. A 501(c)(3) organization, ALSF's mission is to tell the stories of PALS (People with ALS) in order to raise awareness, funds, and create action to help eradicate the disease.

My husband was diagnosed with bulbar ALS back in October of 2023. I noticed his speech back in 2020, it was slurred then. It seems this disease is progressing so fast and it's so sad to watch him go through this. He fights and fights hard and I'm fighting with him 💙😢

Hey there! Stay strong! I just find out this channel and it's very great channel giving us knowledge about this illness. My dad is a stroke patient with PEG and trache, and this year will be his 3rd year with stroke and PEG/trache. I saw another video about the bagpack you show us what you have inside, just like us...bring bag everywhere we go with tape, scissors, syringe hehehe. And at home he'll use his phlegm suction machine while outside we will give him like small pail to hold so easy for him to spit the saliva. But when he was in ward he can't spit at all and used to get assist to cough by using coughing assistance machine like you have but now with phlegm suction and I understand the struggle of that condition. Just now... when it's night those drooling saliva/coughing disturbing his sleep.
Btw during the bag pack video, she said..med school...is she a nurse? doctor? Lucky to have someone who is qualified with qualifications from med school as well! Me here studying different things in uni end up being a "nurse" with no nursing qualifications to my dad 😅 wish I'm a nurse with degree in nursing
Also...Heyy!! we are all stronger than we think! :)

Hello Kevin. Thank you very much for sharing your story. I wish you the best.
I wanted to ask you, you mentioned you had muscle spasms at the beginning and it took 18 months to diagnose your ALS. So, for those 18 months you only had spasms? You didn't have any other symptom? Usually I read that people starts with weakness of some sort but you are the first one I heard it started with muscle spasms.

Geoffrey Min Your comment reminds me of when I was told that my father-in-law had a stroke, and I asked, “Is he okay?” The person that told me screamed back at me “NO! HE HAD A STROKE!” Of course I wanted to know if the stroke had killed him. His saying that to me angered me. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you why. He didn’t die. So in a sense he was okay. Rude comment.
