Are we still banging on about how much better England players are compared to Spain's? Seriously now, after what we have witnessed throughout the tournament? Granted, Gareth Southgate's tactics are cowardly, conservative, reactive, and an eyesore for any football fan, but the players need to take some responsibility for the absolute sh1t3 they have produced. I am sick of players like Declan Rice giving the ball away, incapable of playing accurate passes. Zubimendi who came on for Rodri is a better player and above all a better passer than England's top midfielder, not to mention Fabián or Rodri. These guys would not know this because they obviously never watch Real Sociedad, who are a wonderful team. Most games are won in the centre of the park, and England's midfield is average at best. You cannot take control of a game against decent oposition if your midfielders are incapable of putting 3 passes together under pressure. You don't play like Spain if you don't have wonderful footballers who are great on the ball, you just cannot, irrespective of tactics.

The difference between Spain and England is that the Spanish approach every game looking for momentum to score the goal attacking. The English only wait for momentum based on the opponent's error defending. That doesn't work against Spain.

España ganó a Croacia, Italia, Alemania, Francia e Inglaterra. It makes no sense, to pick whoever players as scapegoats. Spain created an absolutely phantastic TEAM with players, who were rated lower, than the English ones. Best example is the substitition of Rodri, which didn't change the level of the Spanish performance. Single things like forming triangles and so on I could hardly discover in English team. They just relied on special moments of single players, while missing out, to create a real team with all these amazing players.

ESPN has to pander here (because of the overwhelming English audience), but it would be great to have more coverage on the actual winners. The prospects are much more interesting, rather than covering and excusing why England always loses. England also had enormous luck in these tournaments, and never really played well. I think the biggest problem for England is the fact that under Gary Southgate they have been "lucky" with their draws. A lucky draw means that one doesn't have to perform and adapt to difficult situations. Coaches don't have to be creative and find new solutions to problems, players may get complacent, and your weaknesses are hidden. Southgate has an added problem which is his loyalty to "core" players who under perform. One gets a chance to choose the best players in the best league in the world and yet, Southgate, can't pick the best ones. A national team coach shouldn't be a player's friend, he needs to be rough and demanding.

Southgate said in his post match interview that they didn't keep the ball well. That tells you all about his knowledge of the game. He thinks he can put a bunch of good players together and they'll be able to "keep the ball". Anyone that has watched any high press games (Man city-Liverpool etc) will appreciate that the tactical positions of the players is what dictates how to keep possession and playing around the press etc. The fact that he had no answer to the Spain press + on the other side, Laporte running to midfield with the ball, tells you how inept he is. He just doesn't get it. Any manager in the world would kill to have this squad....especially the front 5/6.

    Some facts:
    England overachieved with Southgate.
English players have a glaring weakness that prevented the national team from winning major tournaments: they have problems keeping possession under pressure and lack creativity. Look at Rice, Walker, Trippier, Stones, and even Bellingham. They get nervous and look out of options.
Besides, many of their stars lack discipline and like to drink and party and therefore they are never in good shape at the end of the season when major tournaments are played.
    2. England actually tried to press Spain after they scored the equalizer but Spain is just too good.

@@fletcherchristian6411 , there’s a raging debate at the moment in France about the country football philosophy. The current philosophy was born in 1995, when the French FA decided to rebuild the national team around a new generation of players from the best academies. A new coach came in, the brilliant Aimé Jacquet. He cleaned the house. He decided to no longer select players based on their brilliance alone, but mainly on a combination of absolute discipline and insane talent. The arms race started in France. Out with Cantona, Ginola who were loose cannons who couldn’t follow instructions; in were a young generation of insanely talented young players such as Zidane, Viera, Henry, Trezeguet, Pires, Thurman, Lizarazu, Desailly etc. This team became quickly the best in the world, winning WC98, Euro2000, and losing in the final of WC2006!on penalties. The French football academies focus on producing players who are independent and don’t rely on a system. This is why the French players are so successful. They can play anywhere anytime and be good. The problem is that in modern football, the national teams do not train anymore because the the seasons are too busy and France has problems having a cohesive team. My wish is that Deschamps, who is an amazing leader of men, would resign and that Zidane would take over now. If this happens, France wins the next WC. Zidane has been waiting to take over but Deschamps won’t resign because he doesn’t want Zidane him after a failures. Remember, Deschamps was Zidane’s captain in the national team and at Juve. They have a rivalry going.

In terms of football quality this Spain was better, of course. We didn't have some outstanding players that Spain has. But in terms of mental strength, determination and confidence, they were very similar. Which is why, I had put my money on Spain winning it. They never panicked, even when in difficulty. They went on doing their game.
That celebration (scream') from Olmo, when he saved the goal in the end, reminded me of Chiellini against Belgium, if I'm not mistaken. 😄 It was so great to watch.
