I look forward to David's insight on PBS every Friday. He is one of America's true wisemen. It's funny, you don't hear many refer to themselves as a Whig anymore; however, I guess I am in his corner. So many thoughts and questions have gone through my mind during this podcast and I appreciate the stimulation. With this said, I constantly go back to my main question..."why Trump" and how his (to quote David) "P.T. Barnum ways" resonates with the disenfranchised. To keep things in a Whig context; we are living the "Devil and Daniel Webster" only without Daniel Webster...
Inflation is not solved. It's baked in the rent and home prices and college cost to insane levels. People wonder how their children are going to get off the ground. These prices are an existential problem to average people . Got to stop talking about gas and eggs.
Brooks "Inflation is solved" Wrong. Yeah, well if you own a home that's paid for. Presently homeless because my rent became unaffordable after 40 % increase in 5 years. I no longer go to medical appointments because I need to eat and I can't afford the co-pays and deductibles for testing etc. Mr Brooks you have no idea.
I fully sympathize with you, but the answer to your and many others' problems is not Trump. Rather, it should be Sanders. I voted for Cornell West as a president and voted Democratic down the ballot. Democrats, under the influence of megadonors, embraced social issues at the expense of neglecting economic ones.
@husaynal-husayni5673 I did not no l would I ever vote for Trump. My only point was that Brooks lives in a world in which inflation does not hurt so much.
You are a marvellous journalist and very interesting man.Love your interesting show on Friday with Jonathan Capehart in Friday on PBS.A faithful follower.
Trump isn't the right answer to any question. He's a pitch man with no morals whatsoever. I love David's honesty. People like him and Bernie Sanders are the only hope this world has got.
The problem is even if the middle-class have money and they're living a pretty good life when you got people that aren't living a good life they're bringing you down so when everybody isn't living a good life everybody's getting brought down so we need to learn how to bring everybody up😮
It is difficult to discuss current political events without talking in generalities and stereotyping large groups of people into categories. Many pundits like to talk about the college educated vs. those who are not, rural/suburban/urban, white vs. non-white, pro choice vs pro life, etc., as if they are sole determining factors for everyone. They then make broad assumptions about the characteristics of these groups. This is deeply flawed thinking that leads to error. It leads to the shock and surprise of many concerning the outcome of the recent election. The binary nature of an election forces people to make a choice but how they come to that choice is a nuanced process that confounds pollsters repeatedly. In every case it is a simple matter to find many people who do not fit the stereotype their vote would cast them in. When your own pre-disposition (and prejudice) forms your opinions, your ability to discern the currents of political thought will always be clouded.
Brooks important figure with important message but needs to review his own epistemological understandings because his political conclusions are flawed.
It's great to see that you understand David better than he understands himself. And I sincerely doubt you understand yourSELF the way you expect David to.
Wonderful words. My accountant’s magazine says the America today is not the America 20 years ago. We must remember a lot of Americans did not vote Trump. We should hear more from people like that . Many Christians once atheists became Christians are CS Lewis who served time in the trenches of WW1 . It was him who Dr Francis Collins ( number one person who headed the G Nome project mapping the DNA ) read that changed him from atheist to Christian. David mentioned CS Lewis.
Mr. Brooks votes Right! Mr. Brooks votes Left! Mr. Brooks, will you always support the Boomer Uniparty? Uniparty, Nay. Stop with the overthinking and analysis paralysis maybe? Imho tx
I think there's a big problem in our country with people only being raised by one parent so when children are only raised by one parent they're always looking for another parent figure and that's what they're looking for in Donald Trump??
Mutual appreciation society on full display. The only problem they have is that each one complains that the other describes society better than they do. Oh God are you really going to make us listen to your sour grapes?
At around 18:50, the host said “… a moment where….” which grammatically should have been “… a moment WHEN….” because “moment” is a time word, not a place word. An example of careless English usage.

I so enjoy, respect and follow Brooks and Capehart on PBS. 2 wise and professional men who show respect despite different opinions.
A great conversation! What I would give to have a little of M. Brooks calm and insights.
Ah…a podcast where two adults have a mature conversation instead of the bro-sweat-stinky immature conversations of the podcast universe. Thanks sirs ❤

Thanks Mr. Brooks. I too am politically homeless.

David, agreed! Folks who are financially secure have no clue as to what most people in the US go through living paycheck to paycheck.
You have trouble recognizing who/what is to blame for your situation. MAGA used that to fool you.
David deserves at least one comment.
Amen David Brooks!

If a psychological problem, the world has been ripping all of us apart😢

Excellent and useful perspectives
David Brooks' commentary is thoughtful and sensitive. However, I think it's naive to think that sexism had nothing to do with the election results.
The party that can’t define what a woman is. Is more intellectually honest political party?
The reformation of the heart is at the core of Christ-centered Christianity.

The win for Trump (or loss for Harris) is far more nuanced than you make it here.
The lost Americans they all need a recovery program we all do👍

if this talk does not include the pollution of money in the political system it is missing the biggest boat, end of subject!!!!
