the HST's still look modern, and certainly much better looking than some of the newer UK passenger haulers....We still have them here in Oz doing their stuff on the east coast
It's interesting seeing the Class 43 power cars acting as a twin-unit locomotive. I don't know if the two Rail Adventure pairs pair up in different combinations, or whether 43468 and 43480 stay together all the time. There are videos of the four of them hauling Merseyrail units on the WCML. These trains were topped and tailed by the two pairs, the trailing pair idling. As the journey to Barrow Hill was a 100 tonne load, the second power car seemed shut down, which would have saved a good few litres of diesel, and well within the capabilities of the leading power car. When the Class 43 came out nearly fifty years ago, it was regarded as inconceivable that they would be used as locomotives, although many years ago, the Railway Magazine photoshopped a single power car hauling a train of mineral wagons! Fiction becomes fact?
I don't normally praise the rail unions but they insisted that the HST production models had windows at either side of the drivers cab which to me greatly improved the cab looks from the outside.
Still can’t get my head around these Rail Adventure class 43 formations just look odd doing random rail movements, so use to seeing them on passenger duties all their life, but I’m glad they are getting good use out of them instead of being scrapped, thanks for sharing great footage 👍
hi, great video. not again !! these locos are too old now,to ask them to deliver 3.300bhp is asking a lot, de rate to 2.500 bhp and just be glad you can see them,
Nice one mate! Getting slightly scared when the HST did some quick tones when leaving i see! I can't say much i wet meself earlier because of a 397 blasting the Horn at me.
I would say it's never happened before. but briefly the deltic and the HSTs were in service together and I can find photos of class 47s and 37s in that area of hauling failed HST sets. So it's quite possible about a Deltic has rescue to HST before
Great footage 👍 Managed to get them at stenson junction. Bit of a delay uploading and putting together should be ready in the morning. Also includes the 37’s heading to Toton !!
Incorrect. They were converted to buffered DVT's to work with class 91's before the purpose built DVT's were available. They reverted back to normal usage after this but retained the buffers.
Well done for capturing what might be a complete one-off in railway history! Still cant get used to these HST power cars being used as a loco for stock drags. It just looks “wrong” to me! But, great camerawork as usual. Nice one! 👍🏻👏🏻
Hate the thought of a deltic failing, but what an unintended consequence. Recently historic ecml traction hauling older historic ecml traction. Pity no A4 to add to the consist.
Rescuing that entire consist with something electric in electrified territory, then having a power outage and getting steam involved... Maybe we had better leave well enough alone.
Nice video great camera work as usual as always I am really enjoying your lovely videos and camera work keep your lovely camera work up I am really looking forward to seeing your next video I hope you get a nice video next time also when is your next video going to be on RUclips best wishes Philip xx
That is correct. I was on the Deltic rail tour. I understand the strap worked loose, arced, blowing a thumb width chunk in it. A repair was done as the Thunderbird arrived, however a decision was made to run the Deltic behind the 47.
They were fitted to 8 BR Eastern Region 43s in 1987 and used in place of the Mk4 DVTs, with Mk3 coaches as the Mk4 coaches and DVTs weren't ready in time for the arrival of the 89 and 91s with East Coast electrification.
Electrical fault caused the engines to shut down on the return trip. She was declared a failure at Retford. The crew managed to sort the issue but still requested for 009 and her tour to be dragged to Kings Cross
@@terrier_productionsI understand the DPS wanted it to carry on from Retford with the issue sufficiently resolved, but WCR had already summoned 47848 by that stage. It shouldn’t take long to completely fix the issue once 9 returns to BH.
Mainline failures, even with a tail backup must be a worry for the heritage scene. Worst case scenario could be a loco losing its mainline ticket? Not a lover of changed identities. It's a shame you can't see very much at Wetmore when passing through.
@beeble2003 Because the bahookie end of a Class 43 powercar has a proprietary coupler only designed for HST MK3 stock, the anti-arse end on these buffer fitted powercars has a more standard coupler.
As Mr Spock 🖖 might intone,"most fascinating"!I didn't think that class 43's pulled and pushed anything except MK 3 HST stock until the last year or two? Although I think that a double pair pulled the GWR sleeper once when the 57 broke down and when the 91's where being tested they were used but i don't know if it was Mk 3 or Mk 4 stock although they were really acting like DVT's in that role and I don't know if they powered the train at any point?
They were in full revenue service with the 91s for a short while. Initially just as DVTs (engine on idle for ETH supply). But apparently they didn't like running like this so were used for traction power too. So a set of Mark IIIs was powered simultaneously by an HST car at one end and the 91 at the other.
just to bring a point of pedantism. lol. no one has seen an HST drag a Deltic. Not even in this video. what you are seeing is a pair of Class 43 locos pulling the Deltic. the HST stands for High Speed train. since the coaches are not there. its technically not the train,
I really don't like the colour scheme they've gone with for the HSTs. Just reminds me of the John Major character from spitting image. Very grey. The Intercity colour scheme was my favourite.
They’re locomotives, albeit purpose-built for the HST. If they can get a bit more use out of them, rather than using older, more polluting locomotives, or buying new ones, why not?
Personally feel Deltics too flaky for most National Rail use. to Function you need a whole fleet so a failure can be subbed quickly. Far better now for railtours to use the HSTs
the HST's still look modern, and certainly much better looking than some of the newer UK passenger haulers....We still have them here in Oz doing their stuff on the east coast
Yes, I think you've captured a piece of what Ruairidh MacVaigh would describe as "Motion History"!
Great catch. All we needed was 4472 behind a 91 in fornt and a Azuma.
I never thought I'd see a pair of these, pulling one of those! Great video. ❤

I have that issue (November 2002) and I thought that was very creative of them to do so!
The HST’s colour scheme makes them appear much more modern especially the front.
I don't normally praise the rail unions but they insisted that the HST production models had windows at either side of the drivers cab which to me greatly improved the cab looks from the outside.
They were just solely used to mock the deltic to say "and this is why we replaced you in the first place" 🤣🤣🤣
Great to hear the yougster counting the carriages at the end. I dont know why but that's something I've always done!
Sorry I'm not a train enthusiast but I love engines and the deltic was one the best in lots of ways.
That is a once in a lifetime experience

Well the Deltic had an amazing adventure of its own
Certainly a 'Rail Adventure!'😊
Certainlly something you are not going to see every day. Great record of the aftermath.
One of the most outrageous workings since D1015 rescued a HST in 2002.
Unfortunate the deltic failed but it is a machine and sometimes it happens. But so see two 43 pulling her is rare. Great video though.
Thanks very much 👍
The buffers on the 43s are new thing 🙂
Incorrect. They were converted to buffered DVT's to work with class 91's before the purpose built DVT's were available. They reverted back to normal usage after this but retained the buffers.
not new as the buffer technique used as a backup gap for the class 91 set

Yes, it does look strange. But with 2 power cars they can pull everything and anything. Super-power!

I filmed it last Sunday when 47813 brought it back with the ecs
Anybody else who would like to have seen an HST/Deltic sandwich?
I was hoping they were sending all 4 HST’s for a Deltic sandwich myself!
Those HST's look sharp and useful. What was the problem with the Deltic.

Understood to be a defective battery strap I would bow to anyone who has other information

Coming up next: HST power cars hauling a rake of tankers!
Don’t rule it out 🤣👍
Thanks for the great vid!

Thanks for that, I thought they must have been fitted when they received their Rail Adventure livery.
These units have recently been refurbished at Arlington Eastleigh. They may have been fitted with buffers there, I don't know.
@@charlieOkeenesee reply a couple above your initial reply.
@@markcf83 Cheers Mark. I should have read more closely 😊
Oh that's embarrassing for the Deltic.
What caused the failure? Saw her pass Tempsford on the down main. Wish they wouldn’t rename em all the time
Something wrong with the battery I think.
Only one HST power car being used.
A Real "Pip And Emma" Railway Series story "" lol
Rather sad 😥
I wonder how much it cost to retrieve a broken-down loco ???
deltic saved by the loco type that killed its stable mates, how ironic.
That’s very true - They did play a big part n that happening.
Any one know what caused the failure ?

Wonder why the 47 didn't take it?
Not sure however it was likely needed by West Coast elsewhere.
Very sad to see
Not the most exciting livery on those power cars? What went wrong with the Deltic clone?
Ah but it two HST power cars to rescue one Deltic.
Yes, but the second car would act as a buffer wagon.
@@rodneymcgovern5984 Why would you need a buffer? Deltics aren't hazardous.
