The guy had 8 WAR this year and 6 WAR last year. Why the big bucks? I doubt he gets better. The best you can hope for is that he maintains. For that kind of money you could have added way more than 8 wins. It can't be because he brings in marketing dollars. I don't think people outside of baseball knows much about him at all. This is a curious contract. Ohtani got his contract because he is going to pitch and hit, potentially adding 12 or 13 wins.

That is completely insane. I get that he’s young, but dude better dominate for at least the first 7 years of the deal. I’d never guarantee an athlete more than 5 years, I guess that’s why I don’t own an MLB team
If you NPV Ohtani’s deal, you also have to NPV Soto’s deal. It’s still a ton, but it’s not $800 million
Ohtani's deal isn't $70 mil per year though because of the deferrals. Soto's deal will be $51 mil+ every year.
All these NL teams are stacking up. It makes the idea of expansion teams and league/division realignment really juicy. Manfred wants to expand and 2 new teams would probably mean a realignment. Be wild if the Mets and yanks ended up in the same division 6 or 7 years from now.
