@@caleasthetic Thanks a lot for such a detailed description of your flickstick experience! Especially your sensitivity settings, I'm sure it'll be useful for anyone reading it. Yeah, indeed I was using the sweeping action as well and it definitely made flick stick more usable than without it. Still though, for me the fps trackpad aiming instantly felt natural, so usable and so predictable, that I never came back to flick stick simply because it was "learning something what I don't need already and what is entirely covered by touchpad+gyro aiming for me" :) I guess, if I'd be a hardcore console player and I'd feel reluctant to use trackpad for aiming - I'd definitely resort to using flick stick only.
My problem is my gyro is super jittery my hands move a lot and I can’t aim properly do you know a fix cause it’s subconsciously happening I just move a lot
There are a few ways to mitigate random jitter: - reduce gyro sensitivity; - activate gyro only when touching panel or even "only when pushing LT/RT halfway" or something (like it's done in Breath of the Wild zelda game, when shooting arrows on Switch). - check some "filtering/deadzone" settings, maybe those would help as well.
Does the stick placement not hurt your thumb? Right stick on nintendo switch is pretty unusable for me because of thumb pain. Right stick placement on like a dual shock controller is okay though.
I play with gyro even at 30fps. What's important is avoiding any kind of vsync. Just make it raw 30 and both trackpad and gyro responsiveness is like 60, excluding smoothness.
I played Witcher 3 at 30fps. Using the Deck's frame limiter had REALLY bad input lag. Enabling "Allow Tearing" had noticeable improvement, but it made very little difference. I had to use the in game frame rate cap. Frame time wasn't perfectly flat, but it was still flat enough. I just unlocked the frame limit I had Vsync disabled in game and in the deck. The inputs were very responsive. Felt good the play. Used Gyro on the RB button for tye crossbow and bombs. Felt rly good at 30fps
Feel free to tweak it to your liking. Right Trackpad (As Mouse) Sensitivity: 147% Acceleration: OFF Smoothing: 37 Trackball mode: OFF Haptics: OFF Nothing special overall, pretty standard "tune sensitivity to your liking" approach.
as an og steam controller power user, I completely agree with trackpad and gyro. Welcome to the club! Havent watched the video, did read the description though. Some notes: MAKE SURE THE ROTATION VALUE IS SET UP CORRECTLY FOR YOUR THUMBS SWIPE ANGLE!!! That can't be overstated. No matter how you tune the other settings, this setting is absolutely crucial to getting trackpad mouse to feel good. I do actually pump it to 360 degrees horizontal per full swipe. I also crush the vertical scale to half, so its 180 per full vertical swipe (which is the most the trackpad would ever need; that allows you to go from looking fully up to fully down or anything in between - including resetting to the horizon - very easily). I do also use trackball mode with low friction, and its friction vertical completely disabled so it only spins in the horizontal. For me, this is because the trackpad is a "fast turn input". As a result, the trackpad should be set up to be as "fast" as possible while still being manageable, and to me that means if my thumb is on the center of the pad I should be able to do a complete 180 with a half swipe either direction (which also kind of lines up with flicksticks instant 180 when pulling the stick down; trackball mode is similar to flicksticks infinite turn capability though not as granular). I don't worry at all about aiming with the trackpad, because the gyro handles that all on its own. However, I rather dislike the decks trackpads though; smaller and in a far less ergonomic position.
I want to try your technique. Deus Ex is currently on sale. Would you recommend this game as a good introduction? And you have a community layout, correct?
The game is great and its as good for intro as any other title really. I should have a community layout, but the main idea is to just understand what to pay attention to and then tune it to your liking. You can also check my last 2 videos about Insurgency Sandstorm, they got even better layout description and "how to make it" showcase.
I like using it for custom key binds, replacing keyboard shortcuts. Some hardcore users of Steam Controller actually use LTrackpad for movement instead of LStick and it has some benefits: - you can bind "sprint" to the outer ring - clicking LTrackpad is easier than clicking L3 - click&hold = plus one more traversing function (jump/crouch since we already have sprint bind to the outer ring). And in this case LStick may be used for some custom radial menu binds. All in all, the flexibility is great and each gamer can tune it however he likes the most.
I played Portal and Portal 2 at 90fps with the track pad. It was the most PERFECT setup. It was easily the BEST trackpad experience I've ever had I tried my best to replicate it in other games, but I couldn't.. I can make somewhat decent settings, but not as precise and smooth as how Portal/2 had it. Not even close.. I don't think it's possible, unless I use MnK layout or the games have their own action command area thing I tried getting decently smooth trackpad camera in MGS5, but I'm bound to however the default camera stick layout is. The camera controls in that game are so fcn bad on controller, and the mouse sense isnot any better. It has rly bad mouse acceleration. INSANELY low sensitivity in the middoe (I'm at max sensitivity settings). It feeos like a MASSIVE deadzone and it feels HORRIBLE. I couldn't play MGS5 withut a MnK, but I don't have that option on the Deck Flicking the camera with the pad in Portal/2 resulted in a quick spin. In MGS5, the faster you move the camera, the lower the snesitivity gets, and vice versa. It's RLY bad
i notice the when you said you wanted to aim left when using yaw, you pulled the rightside of the deck towards you and pushed the left away from you. It is actually the other way around. the side you want to aim to in the game is the side of the controller you pull towards you. Think of it like holding a controller instead of the deck. if you use yaw to aim to the left, then pull the left side of the controller towards you amd you push the rightside away form you. when you said you wanted to aim to the right with yaw you did the opposite. you seemed confused as to why the ingame camera turned to the right, when you infact pusehd the left side of the deck away from you. that is also why to you it seemd like yaw and roll where fighting with each other. To aim to the left you pull the left side of the deck towards you, then you finish the left turn by pulling the left side of the deck down and you roll the right side up. This is also how it work on wolfenstein the new colossus on the switch. To aim to the right you pull the right towards you with yaw. and the you roll the rightside down to turn further right. Most people i spoke to seem to also find that way more natural. But the way you do it seemd naturall to you. When i saw your video a hour ago i instantly tried it on my recently finishd config for wolvenstein. the new collosuss. To me it did not feel naturall, but because i saw you do it i wanted to try how it felt, because i always want to try new things if i come across them. Unfortunatlly i switched it back because it did not feel good for me. But atleast you made me try something else Fo me when i want to aim left i pull the left side towards me for yaw. and i also roll to the left like a steering wheel. So the left side goes down. So both movements are to the same side. For me that is more naturall. Maybe i am just weird like that. but i feel like both yaw and roll needs to be to the same side. I tend to use flickstick more then trackpad plus gyro. For my settings i usually set the gro to 1:4 naturall scahle. this means that if i turn my controller or the deck 90 degrees the ingame camera turns 360. So this is x4 1:1. so a 360 turn of the deck becomes x4 360.. I do the sme fort third person action games that use ads only gyro, and for 1st person shooters where i use flickstick. Maybe i wil try trackpad aswell, but i am not certain on what sensitivity to use. I tried a config from someone for sunset overdrive and it worked greath with touchpad. Could you make a video on how you set up that aiming and firing on the same buttons. I know you can use full pull and left pull actions and you can also use differant ingame actions depending on if you pull the triggers multiple time. The only advanced features i used is action layers and action sets. I use action sets for when a game does not support mixed inputs and need full keyboard and mouse controls to be able to use gyro and trackpad or flickstick. I use action layers when i want to switch a few buttons around. for example on the default set i use flickstick and gyro. when i open the weapon wheel i use a layer that has gyro dissabled and the rightstick becomes a normal rightstick to select my weapons. The stange part is that steam allow me to hold an action layer when i pull the trigger or push a button, but for an action set i need to set one action to switch to another action set, and on the action set i need to setup an action to switch back to the default layer on release press. On the default set and on the action layer i have to setup both switches on an extra command. I know you can let a button do multiple actions. so i kind of know enough to make the same action you made work. but if you have a link to your config or an explanation on how you didi it that would be great. I aks this because i dont have the game you used this on. Everytime i use the search button to find a config that is not for a game i have steam seems to give me an error and booth me out of the configs search screen. sorry for the long explanation. but i just really like gyro and try to learn as much about steam and also rewased to make my own configs. I am still experimenting with whaat i like (flickstick or trackpad)
Aiming and shooting at the same button(in this case trigger button) you just have to bind aim button(right click) to soft pull And shoot button(left click) to full pull. And set trigger as hipfire(not sure if it's this one but the setting menu tells you everything you need to know) it's the one that say if you pull trigger fast it will skip soft pull command. Another way is on the button that is not trigger button. You just bind both aim and shoot to one button and set delay to shoot button. Problem is different gun need different setting, you can add another control layer to change in the game but it requires too much works, best is just use only trigger. Or if you've already discovered something different than what i said, I'll be appreciate if you can share with me.
Apparently I didn't show trackpad settings. The point is, they vary from game to game (depending on the in-game settings, personal taste and other variables), so what I tried to show here is the desirable sensitivity/speed/range of movement. And later on you just tweak to achieve similar results and similar feeling for any other title.
Nope, you can set it up yourself as per this example. Alternatively, you can download my other profiles (insurgency sandstorm video, for example), save it as your own template and apply to Fallout 4 game.
Would be so awesome if controllers for mobile phones would ALL have track/touch pads, instead of those sluggish, crappy sticks/joysticks 😅 Greetings from Croatia 😎
That's an interesting thought :) software implementation is key though, plus mobile games are already touchscreen based, so touchpads are less important for mobile phones than they are for x86 Steam Deck. After all, mainly phone controllers are used for old console games emulation, and you don't need trackpads for those.
I really tried my best to make it as consistent 40fps+ as possible + some limited tdp for battery life :) it would look way better if I'd opt out for 30fps no tdp limit, that's for sure
You seem to be more of a pc player. from what i learned, most pc players tend to pick up gyro way faster then console players. This is most like because pc players are already used to a 1:1 translation of their real world aim. rightstick is a real world value (tilting of the stick) to an ingame aim curve that tells the camera to turn at a certain speed. That is why they also get aim assist and rediculous deadzones. I started out on pc in the 90 but after that i played mostly consoles. but i always sucked at aiming because stick are not precise like the mouse. i was so used to aiming with the mouse on duke nukem 3d and doom. The other problem is that most developers either use the rightstick as the gyro . instead of the mouse. Or if they use mouse gyro they dont offer enough settings to turn the sensitivity up or down. For exmaple the remake of resident evil uses rightstick gyro instead of treating the gyro as a mouse (wich is a relative displacement that uses a real world value). Honestly, making good gyro is way easier then making bad gyro controls. yet develoers on console still tend to think of the gyro as a rightstick, wich has aim assist, deadzones and aplies an ingame aim curve to move the camer instead of translating your movement 1:1 Even on pc some developers use rightstick as mouse output instead of using actual moue inputs. Or they apply mouse smooting or acceleration. or sometimes both. On top of that they dont allow for mised inputs as you maybe well aware of (because you seem to know alot about steam input).
I dont think this is better then gyro + stick aim. Im good and very competetive in Quake and Apex with Gyro + Sticks. You can check my uploads for proof. I often need the stick to help me with tracking (together with gyro) and for looking around in a smooth way. I cant do that with the trackpad. Its too snappy.

Fair enough. I did try moving on left trackpad and somehow it lacked tactile feedback on "where exactly my finger is at any moment", so moving on LStick is more natural to me. When it comes to aiming though - it's RPad all the way + optional gyro.

Now i try to make as many different configs in steaminput just to learn how it all works. So i hope to pick up alot of tricks from your vide''s.
Still though, for me the fps trackpad aiming instantly felt natural, so usable and so predictable, that I never came back to flick stick simply because it was "learning something what I don't need already and what is entirely covered by touchpad+gyro aiming for me" :)
I guess, if I'd be a hardcore console player and I'd feel reluctant to use trackpad for aiming - I'd definitely resort to using flick stick only.
My problem is my gyro is super jittery my hands move a lot and I can’t aim properly do you know a fix cause it’s subconsciously happening I just move a lot
There are a few ways to mitigate random jitter:
- reduce gyro sensitivity;
- activate gyro only when touching panel or even "only when pushing LT/RT halfway" or something (like it's done in Breath of the Wild zelda game, when shooting arrows on Switch).
- check some "filtering/deadzone" settings, maybe those would help as well.
I used to do the duel stage trigger thing on steam controller
Does the stick placement not hurt your thumb? Right stick on nintendo switch is pretty unusable for me because of thumb pain. Right stick placement on like a dual shock controller is okay though.
Stick on Steam Deck is absolutely comfortable. Trackpad is fine too as long as you shift your grip accordingly.
I play with gyro even at 30fps. What's important is avoiding any kind of vsync. Just make it raw 30 and both trackpad and gyro responsiveness is like 60, excluding smoothness.
I think when I was recording the video it wasn't an option and "30 fps lock" was indeed 30 fps lock
I just unlocked the frame limit
I had Vsync disabled in game and in the deck. The inputs were very responsive. Felt good the play. Used Gyro on the RB button for tye crossbow and bombs. Felt rly good at 30fps
Can I have your right trackpad settings please?
Feel free to tweak it to your liking.
Right Trackpad (As Mouse)
Sensitivity: 147%
Acceleration: OFF
Smoothing: 37
Trackball mode: OFF
Haptics: OFF
Nothing special overall, pretty standard "tune sensitivity to your liking" approach.
as an og steam controller power user, I completely agree with trackpad and gyro. Welcome to the club!
Havent watched the video, did read the description though. Some notes:
MAKE SURE THE ROTATION VALUE IS SET UP CORRECTLY FOR YOUR THUMBS SWIPE ANGLE!!!
Looks nice! Do you even need left trackpad at this point tho?
I like using it for custom key binds, replacing keyboard shortcuts. Some hardcore users of Steam Controller actually use LTrackpad for movement instead of LStick and it has some benefits:
- you can bind "sprint" to the outer ring
- clicking LTrackpad is easier than clicking L3
- click&hold = plus one more traversing function (jump/crouch since we already have sprint bind to the outer ring).
And in this case LStick may be used for some custom radial menu binds.
All in all, the flexibility is great and each gamer can tune it however he likes the most.
I played Portal and Portal 2 at 90fps with the track pad. It was the most PERFECT setup. It was easily the BEST trackpad experience I've ever had
I tried my best to replicate it in other games, but I couldn't.. I can make somewhat decent settings, but not as precise and smooth as how Portal/2 had it. Not even close.. I don't think it's possible, unless I use MnK layout or the games have their own action command area thing
I tried getting decently smooth trackpad camera in MGS5, but I'm bound to however the default camera stick layout is. I couldn't play MGS5 withut a MnK, but I don't have that option on the Deck
Flicking the camera with the pad in Portal/2 resulted in a quick spin.
But atleast you made me try something else
Fo me when i want to aim left i pull the left side towards me for yaw. and i also roll to the left like a steering wheel.
Aiming and shooting at the same button(in this case trigger button) you just have to bind aim button(right click) to soft pull
And shoot button(left click) to full pull.
Or if you've already discovered something different than what i said, I'll be appreciate if you can share with me.
quite dizzy for first role game.cuz small screen.
My question is in windows do you have all the steam deck options in steam input or is it not recognised?
Windows supports steam input as well. I'm not sure if it's out of the box or you should install some steamdeck windows drivers first.
Steam input is built in within installing STEAM itself in windows
Did I miss something or didn’t you show your trackpad settings?
Apparently I didn't show trackpad settings. The point is, they vary from game to game (depending on the in-game settings, personal taste and other variables), so what I tried to show here is the desirable sensitivity/speed/range of movement. And later on you just tweak to achieve similar results and similar feeling for any other title.
Valve should bring back Steam Controller
Yeah, Steam Controller 2.0 with the same inputs as SD (2 trackpads, 2 sticks, 4 paddles) is a must; I hope it's coming in the next few years.
Didn't sell well. They had to discount it to $5 just to move their remaining stock.
What's that first game?
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (as per video description)
@@GanJJGames didn't see it in description, thanks
do you have settings like this for fallout 4 ?
Nope, you can set it up yourself as per this example. Alternatively, you can download my other profiles (insurgency sandstorm video, for example), save it as your own template and apply to Fallout 4 game.
Hello can you show me the settings of battlefield 1
Not really, I don't have Battlefield 1. You can check out my one of the latest videos, it's about FPS steam layout, long guide on what and how to set
@@GanJJGames Thank you for these instructions, they are very helpful
Glad to help!
I wish all thumbsticks were trackpads, so much better. Almost as good as a mouse.
Would be so awesome if controllers for mobile phones would ALL have track/touch pads, instead of those sluggish, crappy sticks/joysticks 😅
Greetings from Croatia 😎
That's an interesting thought :) software implementation is key though, plus mobile games are already touchscreen based, so touchpads are less important for mobile phones than they are for x86 Steam Deck. After all, mainly phone controllers are used for old console games emulation, and you don't need trackpads for those.
Man, you've managed to make DXMD look really ugly. I'd turn AO back on lol
Honestly, making good gyro is way easier then making bad gyro controls. yet develoers on console still tend to think of the gyro as a rightstick, wich has aim assist, deadzones and aplies an ingame aim curve to move the camer instead of translating your movement 1:1
Even on pc some developers use rightstick as mouse output instead of using actual moue inputs.
Depends on the person. I enjoy playing with trackpads way more than I do with sticks :)
@@GanJJGames yea atleast we all have fun with gyro :)
mobile phone aiming ahh
Pubg mobile???
Install Windows and PUBG is fully playable
Play Tarkov 😂😂
I mostly played Insurgency: Sandstorm and BattleBit Remastered :) Not sure if Tarkov is already launchable on SteamOS
@@GanJJGames It is indeed.
sorry but i play 20 x better then you with stick + gyro
"Im not used to sticks," yet alwas uses left stick to move. Yeah okay, hippo...
Fair enough. I did try moving on left trackpad and somehow it lacked tactile feedback on "where exactly my finger is at any moment", so moving on LStick is more natural to me. When it comes to aiming though - it's RPad all the way + optional gyro.
