I am a third year premed student. I’ve worked med surg, psychiatric and now I’m transferring to neuro-trauma as a CNA. Watching your videos gives me insight. I’m definitely gravitating towards a specialty in trauma. Lol though, I know I have so much time to decide on a specialty. Love love your videos
I'm on the track beginning my pre reqs sometimes I ask myself if it'll be worth it but watching your videos gives me the reassurance it is, you're a big inspiration Dr.Sanchez keep killing it, wish so much love to you and your family this holidays!
Dr Sanchez, best most interesting video yet! Thank you for all your sacrifices in order to someday become an attending surgeon. Plus I know your training is still far from over since you’ll probably do a fellowship. We are so lucky as a people that people like you have the fortitude to endure the seemingly endless brutality and marathon that is associated with becoming a specialist MD or DO.
i believe it is the safest for patients and the system has found that out because regular shift times led to more errors. its the same reason you have one GP and you keep that one doctor all the time. the most errors get made when a patient has to be handed over to new doctors. the long shifts ensure patients are able to have the same person oversee their case for as much time as possible. even 36 hour shifts are done
With all of the greater understanding nowadays of how important sleep is, especially for cognitive functioning, why in heavens name is the 24 hour shift still even a thing ?? Seem's COMPLETELY ASININE.....
The fewer the patient handovers the better the outcomes. More errors occur when a patient is being handed over to multiple doctors. In short, more shift changes leads to worse outcomes for patients. 24 hours is not ideal but it’s better to have 1 doctor be responsible for your care in 24 hours than it is to have 3 doctors responsible for your care in 24 hours. Plus doctors don’t work 24 hours straight. They have what’s called physician sleep rooms where they can go to sleep. Again not ideal but evidence based practice suggests that’s it better.
4th year here, I did my 4 weeks gen surgery elective on thanksgiving time. Never in my life did I ever assisted some many cholecystectomy in a weekend because of the amount of fat ate by people in one day!! 😂
Its such a sick system having to work 24 and more hours, not just in the us. Being awake for so long , extremely tired and responsible for people’s lives. Things have to change.
How do you deal with rude people in the OR? As a surgical tech I’m having the hardest time developing a thick skin and knowing when to stand up for myself 😪
I really love all your surgery stuff especially trauma I really want to be a trauma surgeon eventually so it’s really cool to watch this. I have 2 questions if you don’t mind, 1: would you be able to take a day or two off if you were sick and 2: what kind of surgeon do you want to be general or …? Thanks for your videos they’re awesome
I’m not Dr Sanchez , I have general answers to these. 1) yes, you can take sick time. Usually a week worth of days each year (~7 days). 2) Dr S is going into plastic surgery fellowship after she finishes general surgery training. She is a beast who will be a plastic surgeon.
I never understood why is the weekly work structured like this for doctors, is not it in the best intrest for everyone for them to be fresh and sharp so they are less likely to make any mistakes?
i live in florida i always try to find someone that works in the or or er like you can you flim more of the or to give a tour on your hospital are you in miami
You are super woman, beautiful, super-intelligent. You seem super kind, you're amazing At what you do, you're every mans dream. god be with you, god bless.
Great video Daisy, it's a very important service that you provide on the holidays and for anyone who happens to need it I'm sure they are eternally grateful. All the best to you and your family for Christmas and the New Year!
Thank you Dr Sanchez for sharing these it really prepares us to know what is expected. I’m not gonna lie, as an aspiring student looking into gen surgery, watching this makes my poop fall to my butt 😅 it’s scary as a mom as well. But God did not give us the spirit of fear, but of power love and sound mind so praying for His grace for that season
Hi Dr. Sanchez, thank you for sharing these moments! I do have a question through about doing 24 hour shifts -- do you know if there are folks working on getting this changed or improved because it seems so unsustainable for physician health to go through 5 years lacking autonomy with one's schedule? Thanks!
I have worked in the operating room for over 20 years and in all those years I think I have seen one true emergency gallbladder that needed to be done in the middle of the night.
I’m so glad that the nurses invited you to eat Thanksgiving dinner with them. That food looked good too

Isn’t a 24-hour shift unhealthy for doctors and unsafe for patients?? I’ll never understand the justification for that.
Narcissistic camera hungry exhibitionistic “doctors” obsessed with selfies and social media are a danger to patients 😊
Surgeons and emergency medicine doctors on 24 hour call have rest space where they sleep and recuperate between procedures

Understaffing pretty much everywhere
I always ask this too. I just don't understand. I literally cannot function without proper sleep!

It is actually the carbs that people ate, stuffing, mashed potatoes, rolls and pumpkin pie!!!!!
Wow. I think that stopped my complaining of having to work 4 nights a week for 10 hours. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Love u Queen
