I so loved Miss Phyllis and Mr. Bucky. Coming from New York, I fell absolutely in love with the lovely people of the south and their traditions - this being one of them. I often tell my husband that we are so fortunate to have moved here and discovered a more gentile way of life. Thanking all down here for their lovely manners and everyday politeness. It has been such a breath of fresh air. I already miss Miss Phyllis and her videos. May her and Mr. Bucky Rest In Peace.

My son went into the Army, and was told by some of the older non-coms that he didn't need to call them "Sir." He always replied that his mother would do him more harm than anyone in the Army if she ever heard him address an older person without a "Mister" before their name, and his mother was bigger and badder than all of them! I was so proud of him for that. They were so impressed that he had good manners, and, as a buck private, he was often asked to make up a foursome when the officers needed someone to play golf. He would ask why he was playing golf with Generals, and was told it was because he could talk intelligently with anyone, and they didn't know why. He was raised in a minister's home, and had heard great men talk about great ideas in his home growing up, and could be polite. I am still a proud mother, and he is nearing 50, now.

Well, Mr. Bucky and Miss Phyllis, I am convinced, had I known you both when I came South from the north, I could have answered a lot of my own questions about New and odd customs, and this is one of them...where did the Bucky come from? I have often wondered about that, and the explanation of calling each other by Mr. or Miss or Ms. being a sign of respect was SO well explained! And now I have picked up the same practice. Not a bad habit to have! RIP Mr. Bucky and Ms. Phyllis. Y'all are dearly missed.

I know exactly what you are saying. Southern hospitality was a real thing when I was growing up. People are just different in the south. I was born and raised in Delaware (and still live in DE), but my Dad was born and raised in Georgia until he went into the Airforce and got stationed in Dover, DE. But, every summer as I was growing up (during the 60's) we would spend 2-3 weeks in GA visiting my Dad's family. I truly loved the southern way of life. People seemed not to be in such a hurry. There were quite a few family members that had real water wells to fetch water and for some reason, there just wasn't anything like sipp'n cool fresh water from an old tin ladle on a hot summer day. And some still had huge wood stoves to cook by and even had those water drawers to heat up water for doing dishes and/or baths. I think back then (in the 60's) they were poor and could not upgrade their homes, but for me, it was a wonderful experience. I still remember going with my cousins down the road to a real general store to get a Coca-Cola and some comic books, and I loved the smell inside that store, it had a unique smell to it (possibly the smell of tobacco, i.e. chew'n tobacco and snuff, I think). Fond memories. Enjoy the story of how you became known as "Mr. Bucky".

I was so glad to find this video as I kept wondering how you got the nickname, "Mr. Bucky". While I knew that Southerners always call a woman "Miss", I did not know that it was traditional to call the little boys by "Mr." I lived in OK for 15 years and loved the fact that as soon as a child there can talk, they are taught to say, "Yes, M'am and No Sir", along with other niceties. I do believe that children in the South and in other states like OK, & Arkansas, are taught to be respectful of adults more so than in other areas of the country. However, it has been quite a while since I've been in any of those areas so it may not be the same anymore. Unfortunately, society has changed so much that in our days of being children we not only learned a fear of God, but the same respectful kind of fear for parents, teachers, and anyone else in authority. I think we were blessed to have lived in the best years of life in America, don't you agree? Even Christian teachings are not what it used to be, nor is the church, but I'm sure some would excuse that by saying that I'm just an old fuddy duddy.... and perhaps they're right about that! LOL LOL

My heart breaks for you, I know we will all miss Mr Bucky, he was a gentleman. Though I live in the U.K. and never knew what the title Southern gentleman meant I do now having seen these videos.

Interesting story! I'm old school also, raised in the South and learned to call the elders Mr and Miss as a sign of respect. Thank you for sharing the story of how you became to be known as Mr Bucky!
My thought have been on how Miss Phyllis is doing. We hope that she is doing okay. Sending lots of prayers for you both. God bless!

I had an elderly real estate client here in Massachusetts who is raised in rural Tennessee. When her daughter introduced her to me she was introduced as Miss Vivian. It seems so correct and until she passed away myself and everyone who had business with the property transfer deferred to her is Miss Vivian. It’s a lovely custom and it sounds so much better when you say it in your soft southern accent. I know you’re gone but I’m posting but somehow I think you Miss Phyllis. Will see it.

I, too, wondered why you were called Mr. Bucky....I'm glad I stumbled across this video. Ha..ha... I found your wife's cooking videos months ago and have learned and saved a lot of good recipes and techniques from her. I always enjoy watching when she has you participate in a video.....both of you have such soothing voices.

+Von D P.S. I've come to think of you both as good friends...even though I don't comment very much.
