- Are you having any anxiety about the upcoming semester as you apply for graduate degree in clinical mental health counseling, will look no further hopefully my experience can help shed some light on some things to expect while on your journey.
I wish everybody the best and hopefully this video was insightful and if you have any more questions, please drop them down to comment and I will be sure to get right back to you guys
It's nice to see another black man talking about this program. Blank slate will be my new mantra!
It helps me get through life lol
Good video w/great points! I was 40 when I started my MFT program and I almost let my age discourage me. What I didn’t realize is that so many people have made counseling their 2nd career so 95% of the people I’ve met in this field are 35 & up and just getting started. There is money to be made, you just need to network with the right people
This is super encouraging. Thank you! I'm stepping into my 30s and feeling like I'm already late...keep trying to remind myself there's no right or wrong timeline.
@@LC-nk5nr Yes, stay positive. I wish you the best!
What school did you go too?
@@ursieg Capella
@@chocpch 54 yr old here who keeps circling the drain. Were you happy with Capella?
I just finished my first semester of grad school for counseling (MFT emphasis)…TIME MANAGEMENT is an understatement lol as a mom of two (toddler and infant) and working full time, people have no idea when I say I have NO extra time…I’m doing homework EVERY SINGLE DAY during the semester. I wouldn’t be surprised if I have to quit my job before internship starts. But counseling is what I’m called to do so it’s worth the sacrifice.
I’ll apply you on your journey. I’ve definitely had a lot of classmates and friends who were in the same situation. Some even had to quit work or take a semester off. I would just say pace yourself!!! It’ll be over before you know it
Excellent video. I’m 54 years old and this will be my career change. This was a great description of what to expect. Thank you sir!!
I'm happy this could help
This will be my career change as well. I have a Bachelor's in Nursing and will be attending for the MA counseling in January.
54 years old also. Left the post office in 2022 after 29 years, and I also had 4 military. Would have retired in 2022 with full benefits. I am starting my master's degree program on January 8 2024. I'm nervous but very excited. Thanks for the video!!!
We DESPERATELY need more men in the mental health field. No offense to women, I love them, but they've turned the field into a circus.
@@mailman5865 Maybe we need to start a club for us 54 yr olds moving toward a 2nd career in MH.
I start my program in the spring. I am currently an educator. But counseling has always been my calling.
I'm starting in the Spring. I am a RN and just as you, counseling is my calling.
Inspiring. Im an educator as well and I am looking into counseling programs online to try. Super nervous!
What school did you go too?
This was definitely one of the better videos that I’ve seen. I know that I will carry these words through all of my academic journey. I especially want to thank you for reminding me that this is a time to be prepared, but not afraid.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi! I’m 22 and I just started the program last week. I was worried because I graduated college last semester and I do not have any work experience. But thank you for your encouraging words!! I will come back to this video every time I feel anxious! Also, I love “Don’t go through the program, let the program go through you.” That’s something I’ll keep in mind. Thanks!
what was the interview like? i heard that its in a group interview set up?
@@andrewc5476 Hi! yes, mine was a group interview, There were 3 other interviewees and 2 professors.
Are you asking about the questions that were asked? I was asked about 6-7 questions and the interview was a little over an hour. Questions were something like “Why did you choose this program at this University out of other available choices?” “What is your weakness and what are you doing to work on it?” “What is your coping mechanism when you’re stressed.” And some were questions with specific scenarios, something like: “If your client has a different world view, how would you approach this client?” Although not exactly worded like this.
Hope this helped!
@@LanaREM Did you ever get stuck in a question? Like the last one seems like it would of made me think for while
@@andrewc5476 Yes I did get stuck on a question! I let 2 other people answer first so I get an idea of what to say. My hands were literally shaking 😅 but my interview was on zoom so luckily they didn’t see me shaking. For a question (I can’t remember which) I was too nervous I couldn’t fully process what was being asked. So listen to other people first if you ever feel unsure of what to say!
@@LanaREM Ive heard from a couple of youtube videos that they might give you a case study to see how you interact with others. were you given one?
Great video. It’s encouraging to see another black man in mental health counseling. I’ve been thinking about switching to msw because of the lucrative opportunities what I’ve been told. Thus video makes me to stay where I’m am now mental health counseling
MSW very similar, a lot of overlap. I was thinking the same thing at 1st
Thank you so much for this video. Im a 44 year old mom of 5 finishing the last semester of my Bachelor's degree. You just calmed my nerves A LOT, especially mentioning all the different ages. I hear about therapists with imposter syndrome. I feel like I have imposter syndrome just being an older student. 😅
Im just seeing this channel today. I'm headed into Internship 2 for my CMHC MA program. It is a growth process. I'm part of a cohort but I can't say we're pals. I'm considering PHD counseling ED and Supervision after graduation. It's good to see another Brother in the mix!
Most def. Everyone in the program aint gonna have the same vibe. But hats off to you as well bro!
Thank you for this video. I recently just dropped out of the master of social work program and man. Time management is so important. Whenever I was in the program I thought this is going be easy haha jokes on me got a slap in the face with my mental health taking a toll, working full time, going to school online full time, and especially doing internship part time. Yea that just drained me and was a lot on me. And for those of you are wondering when I got in the program I got in at 22 shortly after getting my bachelors when I was 21 taking a semester break off. Now finding out how much I hate the program and taking my time to work on myself before going back to school in the psychology route I’m meant to be. Though I have an idea when I’ll be going back but definitely going to school part time hopefully my program does hybrid I’m not sure if not I’ll make the best of it during my grad journey again.
I start Texas Tech’s program in the fall! Thank you so much for this video. I am 37 and going part time for my masters.
Happy to hear your progress.
Hey, I’m from Lubbock! 👍
Nice to see this perspective from another black male. I just moved to Houston, TX from Charlotte, NC and got accepted to two masters in clinical mental health programs out here. So many people have been trying to talk me out of doing the program (to do a MBA instead) and the mental health field in general, but I’m still doing it lol. I gotta connect with you on Instagram.
You are a great speaker! I am finishing my bachelors in psychology this month and beginning a CMHC program in October. Your video was so motivating and reassuring. Thank you soooo much! ❤️
good luck ! Its going to be worth it - thanks
The comment about the $$ was so good! It's the same license
Thank you so much for this video! I know that I'm a year late, but I'm getting ready to enroll into the Clinical Mental Health Program and found this! You really helped me a lot. Thanks Dijon!
I’m starting my classes next week! I been nervous but your video helped so much. Thank you
Good Luck! Nerves are apart of process but they leave in no time.
Thank you for this information. Just got accepted to a master's degree program. I will have to take out some loans, but my bachelors was paid for by the military.
You are awesome! Appreciate your video, very informative and helpful
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this uplifting and informative video! I've wanted to be a therapist or counselor all my life and have been letting fear/doubt get the best of me. I finished my BS in psych last year and am starting to look at masters programs...now it's mostly a matter of deciding between LPC or LMFT + cost of each.
Awesome video! I’ve been speaking with advisors and think I finally found a program! Best of luck on your journey!
Thank you! You too!
Got my undergrad at 30
Went back to school at 40 for addiction counseling
Now at 43, I’m halfway through a clinical social work program.
It’s not possible for me to go into school with a blank slate, as I’m already working with individuals and carrying a caseload. Much of what I’m learning is further depth of what I’ve already learned and am doing……….but, I’m taking an odd path.
Congrats to you!
👍🏿 Love your enthusiasm & wisdom!
I just got accepted to Antioch University's CMHC probably! This was a great intro to what to expect - thanks for bringing your energy into the conversation!
The best and most informational video I've seen in the field.
Thank you!
I am glad to see this video before application. It helps a lot to make myself better prepared.
Great video! Thank you very much. I have one more year left in my Bachelor's in Psychology and honestly....its pretty easy for me. Of course, I am 53 and its an online program so that may be a factor. I definitely plan on going straight into a Master's Program (God Willing).
This is the most informative video about the topic I have seen. Thank you for such precise and straightforward information.
Learn a lot thanks for that and I appreciate you assuring the courses within the masters in mainly focused on the program verses general courses.
This is so encouraging!! Thankyou! Starting my masters program in 2 weeks( at 45 years old)...and been freaking out!!
May I ask, what specialty you'll take up ?
Thank you for this video! Finishing up my 1st semester and wanted to see other's viewpoints. Def helped and I had a few laughs with your comments (all true so far:-)...win, win! Lol
I’m from NC as well.I’m nervous. I start on the 21 th of August. I know what it’s like from the client side, but not the therapist side. It’ll be different for me. Thank you for this video.
If you ever need any advice. Link in with on IG
Thank you , for that
Congratulations brother. I'm happy to see you pursuing something that helps you and community.
I appreciate that
Great video, bro. I am considering applying to UNC next year! I love your passion for this topic! Best wishes for your future!
This video is gold. Solid information and helpful.
Just subscribed to you man. Thanks for making this video it was very helpful info!
Great video! I’m starting my masters in cmhc in August
Stay grindin' King
Thank you so much for this video! Very helpful information.
I start my program this fall and all I want to do is be finished already 😅
Whatup twin, its been a minute! Congrats though. Its gonna fly past quick
@@ysbeats1 I was literally searching for day in the life of a CMHC graduate and you popped up! I’m so proud of you 🥹. I swear we used to talk about what we were gonna do and now we are doing it. 🙏
Considering this as a career shift. I've been told by some folks that if you compare a well respected school to a joe shmow school, you lose out 10 outta 10 times... Is that a regional perspective?
Thank you
Hi, thank you for the video, it is very encouraging. I just started my program. Could talk about grants? How to obtain, where to find them and qualifications. Regards 😊
This was amazingly helpful. Thank you.
Awesome video
Thank you so much !!!
You are great 👍
Incredibly helpful video. Thank you
The $$$. Are there any resources for grants you can provide to me. I'm applying for Walden University on line because I want to begin in October. I have applied for a state of North Carolina program. I am waiting for their proof of residency process to determine whether I pay in state or out-state tutution. I'd wait till spring if I had better resources for financial assistance to pursue. You are right about that pay scale. I'm not trying to accumulate another debt 😮
Please advise. I appreciate your video.
Thank you very informative.. Great Job..
Would you happen to know of any sites for scholarships?
Do you have any recommendations on books we can start looking into? Can you mention what you read and all that?
Great video. What difference does it make in if the program is only regional accredited but not cacrep or coamfte accredited?
It must be cacrep or coamfte accredited. If not you run the risk of not being able to cert with your state!
thanks so much, this is so helpful
Great video !!
Great video! Thanks for sharing ;)
Taking 3 classes in fall and spring and 2 classes in the summer how long did it take you to complete the program?
Hey my man, I'm from india, if I join for MS counselling psy, i need to spec 2 years for masters and 2 years for post master intern ship in order to get licencing. That time my F1 OPT will over, is there any way to get H1 visa on intern ship?

Good video bro. Thank you
how many classes did you take each semester?
3 during fall/spring | 2 during summer
@@ysbeats1in this 3 and 2 format how long did it take you to do the program ?
Did you end up graduating?
What program costs $12K???
Encouraging
What's the cheapest program?
I’m looking into this graduate program. I will have a BS in criminal justice in May and I want to do the counseling side. Any advice or tips?
My bad I'm just seeing your comment.
1) There are different ways to become a therapist i.e., LPC, LCSW, PSYD, LCAS.
2) Think about your dream population you want to work & how you can capitalize on the opportunity to bring your services to them.
3) Don't pay over the top for any program $$$$, find a quality program with affordable prices
I have my BS in criminal Justice and thinking of the of going the same route. I am interested in LMHC and looking into SNHU.
Hello, do you have social media or an email? I’m about to graduate with my MA in psych and I’m interested in clinical mental health and wanted a little more information.
Sure.
