  • 1975, "FIRE SAFETY IS YOUR DEPARTMENT" this is a vintage fire safety film that was produced not long after the smoke detector began being used and before its common use in households across America. The film touches on several aspects of fire safety from warning other family members and having an escape plan to how to store certain chemical products such as gasoline, kerosene, paint supplies and other household products.

Hello, everyone! This was a joy to find. I've been looking for this for a long time! My brother, my mother and myself were the actors in the first family that was shown. A blast from the past for sure!

That is so cool, when I produce these films for RUclips I sometimes wonder who the people are. You’re one of many to mention that they were in one of the educational films I’ve posted here. Thank you for sharing with us. You did answer my question though. Your being actors means the house was someone else’s. Do you remember where the location was? Thank you for watching

@@OfficeofImageArchaeology Good to hear from you. I was referring to myself as actor because I acted in the film. But I'm not an actor that was hired. Although we did get paid. It was a one time thing. The scenes of the home with the first family WAS our house. The bedroom where I'm talking on the phone was my bedroom. The family room was our family room. The burnt out house was a different house that burnt down and I remember driving there quite a ways. The whole thing was shot in Kansas, and our home was in Lawrence, Kansas. That was my real brother (not our names) and my real mother. The person playing our father looks familiar to me, but he is not my father. Maybe a family friend. My mother set it all up, and I remember signing a contract at our kitchen table before shooting.
I was wondering, is there any way I could purchase a copy of the film?
      Thank you!
      Nanette Ingham

That’s fantastic, you never have the real story behind this stuff because the people that were in the Films very seldom ever get a chance to see them so many years later. I never realize they were using two different homes although it certainly makes sense. It must be interesting to see film taken at your home so many years ago. Thank you for your story, your memories and sharing them with us.

The smoke alarm shown in this video is the general electric 8201-001, which has a battery flag and runs off a 12.6v Mallory battery. Unfortunately, they discontinued the batteries, so if u have this model or the 8201-201 and 8201-101, then it's time to replace.

Did that short featurette about fire safety also aired during the last segment after some feature movies on tv perhaps on NBC Monday Night At The Movies That year?!

Never saw this one growing up but it is one of the rare ones of the mid 1970`s to include smoke detectors. The GE Home Sentry here (sounds like it is doing a sped up version of the smoke detector cat). This one I agree is tame I have seen way scarier ones although I think having a smoke detector is way better than getting up and blowing a whistle to warn others of a fire. In most cases the smoke and gases would put you into a deeper sleep not wake you up. There are a few others made around this time to feature smoke detectors that I saw growing up. Would be neat to see them again.

Had a sizable fire in my house once. Quite the mess. Lost a bunch too. Take heed.

I remember watching this in either kindergarten first grade or possibly both which was at The tippy top tail end of the '80s or the very very very very very beginning of the 90s

Instead of a whistle, a MSA PASS device will do 😏
