It's absolutely amazing how an incredible film director along with a cast of amazing actors and actresses can produce a film so hated that it's almost amazing. And also how Elijah Wood and Scarlett Johansson both managed to survive the fire that burns in this film.
I felt the same shock and surprise as Nostalgia Critic at this review when this came out. I saw the ads and trailers and thought "Well, this looks like an innocent, whimsical kids movie. And Rob Reiner directed this! How bad can it be?" Then I looked at S & E's zero stars reviews and thought "It's THAT bad? How is that possible???". After looking at the clips, I finally started to understand. Now that I've seen this, I completely understand their reviews, while still failing to understand what Reiner was trying to do.
Thanks for posting this. Nothing amuses me more than memories of Siskel and Ebert trashing a Hollywood dreck like "North." I remember one of them during a "Worst of" show saying how they won't get two hours of their lives back watching these films. Thanks for the memories, guys, we'll miss you.
@@jbvader721I love Marriage Story. Haven’t seen Lost in Translation in forever and haven’t seen that other film need to check it out. Of course now Johansson as an adult said she loved working on the film but to be directed by Rob Reiner as bad as the movie was and have John Ritter and Faith Ford from Murphy Brown and even Elijah Wood play a potential adopted brother I can see why she loved it at that young age.
A year later there was a funny/sweet epilogue to this when Gene & Roger gave hugely positive reviews of Rob Reiner's next film, THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT (BTW, if you have not seen that film I can swear to you that they were right, THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT is a flat-out great movie) and Roger said in his TV review how much he'd hated NORTH and then said with a smile something like "With this movie, I get to say...I loved it."
I remember seeing this movie for a friends birthday party when I was 11. I can remember sitting in the theater thinking "this is stupid" I wasn't until I saw this review on TV the next weekend that I actually understood why I thought it was so stupid. I agreed with Roger then and I still do now even after almost 20 years.
If it makes anyone feel better, this movie came out the same weekend as the lion king so not many people saw it. Although I honestly pity anyone who missed seeing the lion king for the first time in theaters for this.
The funny thing (and I use that term very loosely) is that Rob Reiner actually had hopes for North to be his own equivalent to The Wizard Of Oz, even though he already made such a movie several years earlier with The Princess Bride. In an interview with Archive of American Television back in 2009, he said about North: "I made this little fable, and people got so mad at me, because, you know, I had done When Harry Met Sally..., and Misery, and A Few Good Men, and everybody said 'Oh, it should be a more important kind of movie.' I said, 'Why? Why can't you just make a little slice of a fable or something?' Anyway, I loved doing it, and some of the best jokes I ever had in a movie, are in that movie." I seriously cannot believe Rob Reiner could actually be THAT out of touch.
I didn't know Jason and Julia were in the same movie while they were doing Seinfeld. It is shocking how many well known names are in this movie. Maybe this is the movie that destroyed Bruce Willis' health. The Mrs Ho joke was sorta funny though...
Well Alan Zwibel the writer was humiliated. Look up his article Roger and Me it’s pretty funny and explains his reaction to Ebert’s review. Meanwhile Reiner defended the movie and said it had some of his best jokes in it which I think is crap considering every other movie the guy made before was good and he said he thought Ebert was expecting a more important type of movie from him. Not more important Rob, something decent which you proved you were more than capable of making.
@@sha11235 She has mentioned it a few times in interviews and said she loved being directed by Rob Reiner and found it to be a magical experience. But she was only 8 years old so of course she didn’t know any better. I doubt she has seen the movie since she was young and if she has she probably only enjoys it for nostalgia and not the quality of the film itself.
North is bad but not the worst of 94, not even the worst of SUMMER’94; Beverly Hills Cop 3 was a more depressing time at the movies and I swear it had fewer laughs!
I understand that the movie's stereotypes are supposed to be the product of a child's mind, who sees everything in a simplistic light, but here's the thing... The movie plays up the fact that North is a prodigy, and therefore he is not a normal child. This means that he should theoretically know better than to see people as exaggerated/simplistic stereotypes.
North was just an awful character in general. I know it’s not Elijah Wood’s fault by any means. I mean he put in the best effort he could even at such a young age and his ambition even in a stinker like this is admirable. But the character was such a pompous jerk and so poorly written that it doesn’t surprise me that is what he was dreaming the whole time. Not that I am saying it’s a good excuse for offensive stereotypes because it isn’t.
The main problem that I have with just about every critical review of this movie is this: the fact that the whole movie is happening in a little frustrated kid's mind! And, when you take that simple fact into consideration, the movie makes more sense and for me it works on that level.
Yeah, it makes a lot of sense for a boy to think of jokes like the burren area being Mrs. Ho's uterus. Or the whole Texan scene. or the entire movie. .... Nope. No excuse. That's like saying only kids would like this movie (which they didn't, and likely never will).
"I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. God I miss those two guys, It's just hard to believe that those two are still gone, If only they were still alive, I wonder what they thought about Present day Movies, Like that It remake, War for the Planet of the Apes, The Secret Life Of Pets, Kubo and the two strings, etc. etc.
This whole movie is the definition of "This sounded like a good idea in my head". I feel kind of bad for Rob Reiner; he wanted this to be his own Wizard of Oz.
What's almost as shocking as having the director being Rob Reiner, was have the writer and producer being Alan Zweibel. For those who don't remember, he was one of the lead writers in the early and funniest days of SNL.

Oh, trust me: it's worse than you could ever imagine. I can't even stomach the Nostalgia Critic's review for it. It's that loathesome.
It's absolutely amazing how an incredible film director along with a cast of amazing actors and actresses can produce a film so hated that it's almost amazing. And also how Elijah Wood and Scarlett Johansson both managed to survive the fire that burns in this film.
In the words of the Nostalgia Critic...
"YOU'RE TOO FUCKING NICE!"
Dam homeboy was saying cringe back before we all even knew about over using it today 🤣
My favorite quote. Thank you Roger Ebert, and thank you for posting it.
You feel the disgust building up in Ebert's voice while he's going through the review
There will never be another pair like Siskel and Ebert.
"Any subject can be done well"
I'll take that to heart.
I admit to a chuckle when Reba started singing.
Sign that a comedy stinks: a character appears in an Easter Bunny suit.
“This is just trash, Roger”
Ebert's face at 0:14 says it all.
I never noticed that before but he looks like he's about to fuckin' explode. Movie is str8 torture.
This is the same dude that directed stand by me. ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES!
Here is Roger's absolutely legendary review of this movie.
If they think North is first class junk, they should see Movie 43, that's also first class junk.
+jameygamer I loved Movie 43
Haha. I don't tell people how loathsome that movie is just so they won't watch it out of curiosity.
Richard Roeper wrote a review of it on Ebert's site, he said that it was "The Citizen Kane of Awful." I thought: "Wow. That is AWFUL!"
“This is just trash, Roger.”
I love that, haha.
I can’t believe this was Scarlett Johansson’s first ever movie.
Watches a triple feature of "Under the Skin", "Marriage Story" and "Lost in Translation" to cleanse myself.
0:12 When Gandalf is dragged down by the Balrog
I remember seeing this movie for a friends birthday party when I was 11.
I can remember sitting in the theater thinking "this is stupid" I wasn't until I saw this review on TV the next weekend that I actually understood why I thought it was so stupid.
I agreed with Roger then and I still do now even after almost 20 years.
at the end 3:09 siskel just flippantly waves his hand and says "this is just trash, Roger".
I felt Unclean as I was watching it. Lol. Classic line
Think about that statement. Like, how bad does a MOVIE have to be to make you feel unclean? That's how bad North is.
0:14 I love how Ebert has a look of disgust on his face even before talking about the movie
what a fucking demon
If it makes anyone feel better, this movie came out the same weekend as the lion king so not many people saw it.
Although I honestly pity anyone who missed seeing the lion king for the first time in theaters for this.
Thank God for The Lion King!!!!
I love how Ebert looks like he hates even to have to talk about it!
The funny thing (and I use that term very loosely) is that Rob Reiner actually had hopes for North to be his own equivalent to The Wizard Of Oz, even though he already made such a movie several years earlier with The Princess Bride. In an interview with Archive of American Television back in 2009, he said about North:
"I made this little fable, and people got so mad at me, because, you know, I had done When Harry Met Sally..., and Misery, and A Few Good Men, and everybody said 'Oh, it should be a more important kind of movie.' I said, 'Why? Why can't you just make a little slice of a fable or something?' Anyway, I loved doing it, and some of the best jokes I ever had in a movie, are in that movie."
I seriously cannot believe Rob Reiner could actually be THAT out of touch.
I've never seen this movie. I never felt compelled to see this movie.
But I have watched the Siskel and Ebert reviews of it at least 12 times.
I didn't know Jason and Julia were in the same movie while they were doing Seinfeld. It is shocking how many well known names are in this movie. Maybe this is the movie that destroyed Bruce Willis' health.
The Mrs Ho joke was sorta funny though...
This clip is classic and makes me laugh I keep coming back to it lol
NOW I GOTTA SEE THIS MOVIE
I have found my self quoting them from this for so many other things!! Wish I could of seen the director and casts face when this review went out!!
I miss Roger Ebert. He wrote funny reviews with sentences that are actual humor. I liked how he treated films with a balanced manner.
i was sad for weeks after he passed away in 2013. miss his voice so bad
This film is also infamous for another reason: it was the film debut of Brynn Hartman, who would later kill her husband, Phil.
On a happier note: also a very, very young Scarlett Johansson.
This was her first film. I doubt if she talks about it.
This movie has Brynn Hartman that’s sad and not in the good way
@@sha11235 She has mentioned it a few times in interviews and said she loved being directed by Rob Reiner and found it to be a magical experience.
Roger Ebert's face at the beginning. 🤣🤣🤣
That’s one of the many problems that this movie has.
LOL, yes I picked up on that too..... God I miss these guys and in all honesty we still need them now as much as ever.
0:14 That's exactly the face I make when my mother-in-law is coming to dinner.
If Ebert when to heaven, god will be playing Citizen Kane 24/7 for him.
If he went to hell, the devil will be playing North 24/7 for him.
His least favorite movie was I Spit On Your Grave.
"It's deplorable." 😄
on several of Ebert's obits they mentioned this infamous review.
Thumbs up for Siskel and Ebert's reviews! Thumbs down that both critics are now gone!
Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it."
-- The late Roger Ebert
Rest in Peace Roger, I know you and Gene have a lot of catching up to do.
LOL LOL this might be the best review of a movie ever.
This doesnt excuse on how offensive this movie is
Bruce Willis in a bunny suit is pretty awesome,I have to say.
What's almost as shocking as having the director being Rob Reiner, was have the writer and producer being Alan Zweibel. For those who don't remember, he was one of the lead writers in the early and funniest days of SNL.
There was so much talent in this film that the ending result was appalling. Everyone involved in this film has been in at least one great movie.
@@spencer10182 All these unfunny jokes, talent and stereotypes costed 40 million dollars Spencer. Final total?
A measly worldwide 12 million. Couldn't gross half of its budget even
Dont forget 1994 gave us The Shawshank Redemption, Mask, Dumb And Dumber, The Lion King, Speed, The Little Rascals movie and Pulp Fiction which contained a better use of Bruce Willis. North stood no chance against those other classics.
I don’t think North would have ever had a chance for success no matter what year it was released in.
The person who wrote the screenplay followed Ebert into a restroom at a Chicago restaurant and then told him how much he hated his sweater. And then they had a good laugh about it.
"It's junk. First class junk"
Love the look of disgust in Roger's face when it cuts back from the clip.
I don't know, when they say "The Defense Rests" and they literally rests it made me chuckle.
I bet the stars of TV shows such as “Cheers”, its spinoff “Frasier”, “Wings”, “Coach”, “Mad About You”, “Friends”, “Miami Vice”, “Full House”, among loads of others were really happy they were not in this movie!
Thank god you had the final word on this one, Rog. RIP
