Pretty much every modern MBT uses smoothbore cannons. The only modern tank that still uses rifled guns is the British Challenger 2. Smoothbore guns aren’t less accurate than rifled guns thanks to their ammunition. They fire what’s called “fin-stabilized” rounds which as the name implies, has fins located on the back of the rounds which keep them stable through the air. This makes smoothbore as accurate as rifled and gives them a higher muzzle velocity than rifled guns. The Merkava, T-72, T-80, and T-90 are the only tanks known to fire missiles as well. I think the top 5 best tanks in the world are the Abrams, Leopard 2, Leclerc, Challenger 2, and Merkava. (not in that order)

Reactive armor is a protection system which blows up when a RPG or an ATGM impacts to the armour. So warhead blows up outside of the tank. But its not fully reliable.

    • @NationalSniper
      @NationalSniper 5 лет назад +2

Reactive armor has become obsolete because modern anti-tank missiles/rockets have dual warheads. The first warhead activates the ERA, after which the main warhead hits the naked armor. ERA does still work against HEAT rounds and older missiles though. It can be effective in protecting weaker areas of a tank against older anti-tank weapons.
But you would never want to rely on ERA as primary armor. Aside from being ineffective against new anti-armor weapons it is also pretty much useless against kinetic energy rounds.

The chimneys you highlight which are on top of the MBT’s are called Meteor logical Sensors, there task is to monitor wind, air temp/pressure etc and that information is constantly being fed back to the Computer Fire Control System to help achieve a first time hit in all weather. The housing to the right of the Challenger 2 is a 7.62 chain gun housing coaxially mounted on the main gun inside the turret plus the box above the gun is the Challenger 2’s Thermal Sighting equipment. When you where in the turret of the Challenger 2, the G icon stands for gunner having control of the weapon platform, the L stands for last lase, you can have first or last lase selected either F or L . Last lase is selected primarily used when using the laser to acquire target distance in poor weather....cheers.

Active protection system is a modern defence system for ATGMs and RPGs. There are some dispenser on the Tank hull and turret which belows them up when they come close to the armor. Missiles and rockets do not impact. They will be blowed up by the dispensers. Normaly no damage to the tank. But it can just blow up them if they come from side and front. Rear side is unprotected.

@22:10 To answer your question about the barrel bulge of the tank: When the crew fires a round, the toxic fumes and exhaust of the round will be collected in that bulge so the crew doesn't get suffocated by it. When the round exits the barrel the over pressure (generated by the explosion inside the barrel) will force the toxic fumes and gasses outwards. That's why you see smoke coming out of the barrel when a round is fired.

3:14 Those are the ammo boxes for the heavy mg. No idea what the tube is for, maybe there is a camo net stored in there.
HEF: High explosive fragmentation, a anti infantry shell.
    APFSDS: Armour-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot.
In 1964 John D. Myers presented what is considered the first functioning laser rangefinder prototype, using a ruby laser.
Pretty much all of the russian tanks have a infrared flashlight on the turret. Modern rangefinders, like laser rangefinder, didn't exist in military vehicles until the T-62 tank, which was produced 1972. As far as I could figure out, all of the NATO states quickly updated their tanks with laser rangefinders afterwards.
A turbine engine is nothing else as a scaled down version of a jet turbine for tanks, only that it functions as a traditional engine. They are smaller but as powerful as diesel engines, and quieter.
The Soviets changed from diesel, to turbine and then back to diesel because the turbine engine isn't really fuel efficient, especially in idle mode.
The smooth bore barrel was designed to use the explosive charge of the shell more efficiently than a rifled one, since there is no room for the explosive to go around the shell in the barrel. Shells fired from the barrel are all fin-stabilized to keep their accuracy.

    Regarding to the Merkava:
The structure in the paint on the Merkava has a camouflage purpose. Big and flat surfaces (even painted with a mat colour) would reflect the sun in the desert much more better, than something uneven or if you will, something more natural like gravel.
The German army had also the thought of this structual paint. But they decision was against that, because of NBC weapons. The cleaning effort after a attac with NBC weapons would be much more higher to get rid of the contamination.
The original purpose of the backdoor was a stratigic one, to rearm the tanks while they are in a static position. Throu this little door it is much more easier than throu the hatches in the turret, like it is done normalwise.
    Regarding to the Leopard 1A3:
The small little thing on top of the cannon is the IR light. The optics for the gunner are coverd by those two triangeled shaped things in the top front position of the turret, dircetly behind the gun shield.
By the way, the exhaust of the tank are those aslant grids at the end of the tanks hull. The grid on top protects the air intake.

HE is probably way more effective than AP here because in DCS, the fragmentation effects of explosions are not modelled (but blast itself is). To compensate for that, ED increased the ammount of virtual explosives in weapons, so that instead of shrapnell damage now more blast damage is dealt (i.e. to increase the lethality radius for soft targets). This now has the negative side effect that direct hits are waaaay overpowered ...

  • @berkeyazc1803
    @berkeyazc1803 5 лет назад +2

HESH=High explosive squash head, difference between AP and HESH is, its using plastic explosives. HESH can damage better to the thin armor. For example sides of the tanks. Which makes it better than AP at thin armor. But AP is better at thick armour which impacts and totaly pierces the armor. But if the armor is not thick enough it pierces and goes outside of the tank. HE is most common round, only British uses the HESH round. After the Cold war America decommisoned their HESH rounds, and replaced with HE. Generaly thickest part of the tank is the front layer below the turret. The thinest part of the tank are Top of the turret and Rear of the turret which generaly contains munitions. Its the arsenal of the tank if you hit it everything in there goes off.

A few notes, the T-72 with it's fuel tanks at the rear, this is a huge design flaw as you only needed to fire the fuel tanks and the whole think blew away. The Merkava is a monster tank so fucking advanced and the dimensions are insane it's humongous. The protection system is active not passive (don't look for it in the armor). The front canon shape is to handle heat. There sun from above created temperature differentials with the bottom so some genius guy invented a sleeve to compensate for that.

Hey Grim I loved this video, the test drive and firing range was nice, now I know this video is pretty old, but there's one thing you might want to add into consideration, there's a symbology on the sight that'll indicate the distance, and always remember, if your sight is located on the right of the tank (in the case of Eastern tanks) you might want to compensate for the distance and aim to the left of the tank because it's very close, and the reason you were missing with the T-55 is because most of your shells were flying above the tank and not at it.

smoothbore guns not only allow versatility and various different ammunitions like HE, ATGM etc. also the can fire the most deadly currently user APFSDS rounds. Basically, those are a heavy extremely dense dart that goes VERY fast and can pierce almost any armour. The overall efficiency is dependent on the velocity of the projectile and that decreases with range, but anything below 1500m today or up to 2500m in the early and mid-80s the target died.
Cap, all those numbers are metric because there are very, very few countries who use imperial outside of aviation.
Only the USA, as well as Myanmar and Liberia, have not yet made metric official and obligatory; in further countries like the UK, Canada or the Philippines are metric and imperial in use.

ERA (explosive reactive armor) are blocks of explosives surrounded by 2 plates of metal. When it gets hit, it explodes outward and possibly bending/breaking/making the round richochet. In case it gets hit by HEAT the plates are again thrown outward and are used to absorb some of the HEAT stream. Also the abrams exploded with the HE because you hit in the driver's hatch or slightly above it where the armor is weakest, the shell exploded and shrapnel destroyed the tank. The AP didn't penetrate it because it doesn't have sufficient penetration capabilities because you shot at the turret. Also russian HE isn't HESH, pls not again it made by blood boil.

Cap my good fellow you should find a site like you did with the planes of the world series, It would of helped you with the specs a lot. If Janes has an online site about heavy Armor would be a good site, but i'm not sure. Those round tubes are to stow the barrel cleaner for the main gun. Also those big forward facing lights on the turret of the early models was an infra red search light, early night vision, until it got hit at least. The little tubes on either side of turrets or sides of tank depending on model are smoke grenade launchers, also newer armored vehicles also are equipped with laser detectors around the hull and turret, in the event it detects a laser there is an auto override slaved to at least the main gun and automaticly slews to direction of the targeting laser and they auto fire. I could go on but no one wants to read a book here. As far a the myth of the Abrams never being knocked out in combat, it is a myth. Reactive armor is usually explosive... in other words, when it gets hit, it explodes, to negate the explosive force of a shell. In real life the reactive armor on the Russian tanks, don't seem to work at all. many dead tanks with the armor intact, suggests its does not function as intended, on Russian tanks, only. The rest of the world's Reactive armor seems to function as intended.

I believe the main reason why most countries select smoothbore guns over rifled guns for their main battle tanks is because smoothbore guns can use different types of ammo for different applications, making the vehicle more versatile.

This looks like it could be an awesome tank simulator it has potential but rn it honestly looks horrible. It really needs a lot of work for sure.

DCS doesn't have parameters of armor? wtf lol
P.S. You for sure don't know much about tanks :D That tube on T-55 cheek is a snorkel for underwater traversing. ATGM's definitely wont ever be in such position towards gun, if you would shoot, you might hit your own barrel.
@5:55 - No, that's IR light, not range finder. Range finders are top mounted. As well those red lights are reflective IR as friendly identification.
@7:20 - those are rubber flaps, like in front of the tracks.
@9:50 - Smoothbore gun doesn't need shells of WW2 era where it requires rifling, British were a bit old in that technology because they took pride in their HESH shells that require rifling. Smoothbore doesn't require because modern era uses APFSDS shells that, as someone already mentioned, are Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot shells, for those shells they get higher velocity if they aren't being spun, those shells are like flying darts literally, not a bullet like from a pistol, it's a flying rod at this point. So rifling them makes them slower thus inefficient.
Merkeva MK4 doesn't have a short barrel, it looks like that because the turret front armor plates are extended forward so that they can get as much angle as possible, so it's very sloped, since the actual gun moving portion is deeper inside the turret. That's how every tank would basically look if you would add highly sloped turret armor up front.
You should google tanks and read wiki before doing these sort of videos where...you have no idea what you are doing and trying to explain it to others :D It's worth to do a research before.

Thank you for explaining details. It is true he does not know, but Cap is fighting cancer. He may not have much longer to live, and im glad he agreed to do Combined Arms videos to experience it a little and share it with us while he is well enough to do so, instead of leaving it alone. Studying up on it would be a drag if you are not interested in tanks or ground units as much as the aircraft.
He is a pretty good pilot in DCS, and Combined Arms is kind of an afterthought in the sim. Its not a tank simulator, its mainly for jets and aviation. Check out his other videos on all of the modern aircraft - he is extremely thoughtful and thorough in his tutorials!

0:45 that was a complete mispronunciation of the word Leopard cap (you sad leppard not Leopard, but you aren't german so it was meh. Tipp: try use google Translator to get the rough pronounciation)

Just a little frustrating watching Cap play a game of guess what this thingamabob is, and routinely getting them wrong. Too much time was used guessing specs and pointing out obvious things like hatches. It overshadows the good bits. By removing the wrong and the obvious, you could cut up to 20 minutes from this video.
I would much rather listen to your impressions and opinions of each tank, even if you call my favourite tank, the Leopard 2A(5+) ugly 😵‍💫

Jeez cap, learn your stuff, the lumps are ERA and the Lower front glacius, is most tanks weakpoits, so with ERA, literally, the plate explodes when hit with Round to counter the incoming shot.. Wirh modern APFSDS, basically any, flat armoured spot is Piercable , so the T 90 DESIGN, while " strange" looking. It's for a reason.. it's very small and low. 3 man crew... AUTO loading gun, can fire the Guided Missiles from the barrel. And many other shells. Itsnlilely the best modern design.. these cheeks on the Abrims are very jucy targets for a Sobot. The lep, has a better designed turret. And the Abrams 120mm is the same gun as the Lepord. German gun Very effective . Fires depleted uranium APFSDS, Basicly sold shot. Costs threw anything, unless deflected by sloped armor.. Like the t 90 has..

The armour on T-55 is garbage, T-72 meh but better than T-55 and has composite i.e. steel and composite and steel. T-80 mediocre armour, T-80U mediocre-good armour, T-90 Good armour.
Leopard 2a4 mediocre armour, 2a5 superb turret armour but same hull as 2a4, 2a6 same as before but better gun.
M1 Abrams mediocre armour, M1A1 mediocre-good armour, M1A2 good armour.
Problem with the soviet and russian tanks are usually their shit reverse speed and the fact that if you shoot low centre hull the turret will fly off.
Smoothbore gun shells are stabilized by fins on the projectiles, smootbore barrels have longer lifespan than rifled ones and are cheaper to make.
13:59 Those are Shtora 1 infraded scramblers, they disrupt laser guided weaponry.
14:07 Those are the Kontakt 5 ERA (Explosive Reactive Armour), good against chemical penetrators like HEAT and missiles but bad against Kinectic penetrators like tungsten rods.

100 or 105mm AP not penetrating Abrams makes sense. It has rediculous strong armor. Abrams can survive 125 and even 120mm DU NATO at front and side armor at point blank range. To kill it you need to hit the rear. Maybe if you have the most modern 120mm APFSDS-T DU or L55 gun you could penetrate the side with multiple hits.
But the front is pretty much invulnerable to anti-armor weapons. Leopard 2 A6/7, Challenger 2 and Merkava 4 also have very strong armor.
In tests it took 7 120mm hits to destroy a Leopard 2 A5.
100mm will never penetrate Abrams (or any other modern western tank) head on or even side. The HE round destroying it appears to be incorrect. HE is very ineffective against modern tank armor.
