Hey, fellow ringling grad here. Just wanted to thank you for sharing this here on RUclips. I was also a student of Don Brandes and lost all of my notes on this technique years ago due to a fire. I'm very thankful for this as I've been wanting to revisit this style of work. Thank you so much

Wasn't his media class just one of the best EVER?! I think it's the only handouts I've ever kept.

If you varnish these does the colored pencil dissolve?

I haven't had any issues with spray varnish, which is my go-to. Brush application might effect it and move your pigments around though.

Thank you so much for posting this! I'm going into my next project for RCAD and it happens to be oil rub, which I'd never even heard of before, so this helps a lot!

This is a lifesaver! Currently a student at RCAD, and I am at a loss with this medium. In the colored pencils phase, I cannot figure out what to use for what. I've never learned how to identify the different colors in the face, let alone invent them since I'm working with a black and white photo reference. I need something to observe and copy, but I can find NOBODY who looks enough like Oscar Wilde to just use the colors on their face... No guidance from my professor or roommate has been helping. They tell me, "use this color for this, use this color for this, and this color for this", and then they say I need to layer it. Layer it HOW??? Which of these colors am I putting down first and HOW??? Where do I start and where do I go from there? I need a step-by-step within the colored pencils phase of this process, please.

Hahaha I know exactly how you feel!!! (Not laughing at you, just getting flashbacks 😉) The best thing to remember is that in RCAD you're going to discover your style, the palette, & the medium you prefer. It's all a big experiment, so try not to think of it in absolute terms - there is no "right" way to do it.. you could use only blues & greens on a face and it'll look great! Try to focus more on what color is the most similar in value (like yellows & warm tones = highlight, purples & cool colors = shadows). Then once you get that down, start experimenting by changing it up! Plus, if it doesn't work, you can always gesso over it and start again!

Bethany Dawn Bayes Ringling is a great school, but it honestly depends on you. I would compare the cost of schools, take into account that a school in your home state will be MUCH cheaper, and even if you have state scholarships like the Florida's Bright Future Scholarship it will only account for a very small portion because it's a private college. Beyond tuition costs, look for a school that has a program that fits YOU - Ringling has an unbelievable Illustration program and that's what I was looking for. Pratt in NY has a great Fine Arts Program, SVA in NY too is wonderful for Cartooning, etc etc. (Not that these schools aren't wonderful with their other programs they offer too). And lastly, but most importantly - look for the teachers that speak to you... they will be the reason you learn and grow as an artist so find the best you can! This is also a non-college option to pursue on your own - find an artist (or many) who will take you under their wing and not only teach you everything they can, but push you to be better than they are - in your own right though (some teachers can only teach you to create art like they do, but we all work differently). I wish you all the best in your endeavors to further your artistic talents, and of course any other questions you may have - feel free to ask! I'm happy to share my own experiences!
Sadly, I don't have a deviantart account, but hopefully I'll have a website working in the near future! :) Thank you though!
