First to welcome in the New Year (geographically speaking) is the Pacific Nation of Kiribati.
Then followed soon after by New Zealand, then Australia with an awesome bridge/harbour show

Kiribati (pronounced Kiribahss) is an island nation that enters each new day first. Some of its islands are actually located in the Line Islands in Eastern Polynesia. Kiribati is where the International Date Line (IDL) goes wonky to ensure that all of its islands are on the left hand side of the IDL.
I think there are a few other island nations ahead of NZ.
Australia follows NZ two hours later.

Sydney has barges moored along the bay, so you're better off down river, with the bridge in the background, so you can see the heights of what's happening on the bridge as well.

We get in pretty early but we definitely aren't the first to bring in New Year. Our NZ cousins might spit the dummy hearing you say that (they aren't first either but get in a couple of hours a head of us). We are probably first with a world class and most years best in class fireworks display though. That does mean you gotta plan early and get your ass in early (like a day or 2 camping out early) if you want a good spot, best to know someone on the north side with an apartment with a view to avoid the crowds altogether.

Yep gotta get there early and stake out a spot. Some people get there the day before and camp out, or early that morning like 5am. You won’t even get to the harbour if you leave it to later on NYE. And it’s usually all ticket holders now right down on the harbour and Opera House Forecourt. You’re better off getting there early and getting a ferry over to Cremorne, or Blues Point, or Luna Park precinct, on the other side of the harbour, or going to Rushcutters Bay.

Sydney and Melbourne would be the first major cities to celebrate the new year. Auckland in New Zealand, a smaller city, would bring in the new year 2 hours earlier than Sydney and Melbourne.

You need to plan ahead, you obviously didn't do your research on the new year's celebrations in Sydney. I've seen Americans come here and simply miss out because they assumed too much without doing research of where to be for viewing. Nearly 2 million people crowd the harbour to view the new year's fireworks. Try next year
