- A short video about a recent supply run to a sister boat to pick up some parts for the helicopter, not to mention a few other vital items.
More videos coming soon.
Thanks for watching. Feel free to comment like and subscribe for more tuna pilot shenanigans.
Probably 25+ years ago I was in a 206B doing traffic around NYC and I heard a guy on the river freq. that sounded like he was on a boat offshore. I assumed he was looking for tuna and told him that I didn’t know we had tuna boats offshore around NYC. He said he wasn’t near NY and was off the coast of Georgia at 500’ in a 500. I was below 1000’ AGL myself. We were talking on 123.05 as if we were right next to each other. Clear as day. I couldn’t believe it and he was yelling to his crew that he was talking to someone in NY. I was grinning ear to ear too. I had never had a case of such an atmospheric skip before and never had another one. LOL!
As far as I am aware, FM doesn't skip off the ionosphere like AM or SSB. What FM does often do is get caught in what is called "tropospheric ducting" instead, which is even weirder than skip. As a pilot and a ham radio guy, I would have loved to be in your position and would have tried to get their address so we could exchange QSL cards. When you think about it, radio and aviation are man's greatest, strangest accomplish and we take it for granted that they go together.
😎🇺🇸As a Long Range Live Aboard Dive Boat Captain In The Bahamas and Caribbean I Would Sometimes Experience That Same Phenomenon Of “Atmospheric Skip” Which Definitely Led To Some Interesting Conversations
Great video, man! I would like to ask you why you fly on left seat instead of right? Congrats from Portugal 👍🙂🇵🇹
There are a lot of reasons why the Hughes 369 might have a left seat PIC. What is most likely is that its simply something that carried over from when the helicopter was modified from it's military version to it's current civilian variant.
A more specific answer would be, most likely, all the right seat cyclic & collective controls were removed across the tuna fleet - due to a decision made years before by someone who knew why, probably so the tuna observer can't bump the collective with his right arm if he were in the left seat. A helicopter pilot can let go of the collective with their left hand, adjust radios & instruments in the middle, virtually any time, hence helicopters are setup for right seat PIC. With larger instrument panels typically biased right, this gives the left seat better visibility through the nose (maybe not on the Hughes 369). A left seat PIC (single pilot) would have to hold the cyclic with his left hand while adjusting radios and whatnot with his right hand, not ideal but not difficult, and likely not a factor in these tuna ops. UH-1 veteran pilots in Vietnam flew from the left seat, so they could see better, and let the new pilots do engine start, stare at gauges and tune radios from the right seat. The new pilots spent all of flight school in the right seat anyway.
@@N_Wheeler Thanks, very informative answer! 👍
hes my bitch , hes my mechanic. things i would never say to a helicopter mechanic lol
I can't get my commercial because of a medical condition, otherwise I would have binned my normie life years ago to take a job like yours. That was my dream when setting out to get my SEL license and it died a quick death when my disease ran amuck while pursuing it. Watching videos like these make me smile though, because I got the romance of flight bug so bad it makes me happy just to see anything flying, from mosquitoes to MD500s to 737s. Keep making them and I will keep hitting the like button. Have you ever written about your experiences, or do you know of any books or articles that you could suggest?
Sincerely,
Eastbound and Down

Go sport pilot or glider. No medical required.
@@Extreme__SittingNo money to be made from it though
@@RhodokTribesman True, but flying paramotor is awesome just to simply DO. no medical, fly like a bird, go almost anywhere you want, etc. Less rules than flying a chopper.
If your still flying the 500 just do as good a pre-flight as possible each day. Thank you for sharing your flying.
Nice. I loved it out there. You’re braver than me tho. I would never fly away from the boat on a set because I knew if I had to put it in the water they weren’t coming to get me for a while.
jesus christ, those were some good fucken landings my guy
I miss my 500 sooo much.
Man that looks awesome!
My strobe don't work suhn! hahaha love it!
Thank you Sir, awesome flight
Damn this is awesome. No idea there were heli’s for Tuna catching. Very much a novice
new to the channel been watching for a bit now, always find these oddly satisfying. take care dude
You put that pontoon right on the red like a champ, well done
The most important flight you'll do all year 🤣
Seriously man, I call it a "supply run" but really, all we picked up was a few oil filters and 2 cases of cheap Filipino brandy...you know, the essentials. 😂
Im new here , I enjoyed every video i saw on your channel, keep it up.

Great job.
I hope the company follows conservation guidelines and are not just ramping and emptying the sea.
Hi Tim! Good question. There are a lot of guidelines in place the fishing vessels need to comply with. If they break any of them whether its unintentional or otherwise, they face 6 figure fines as well as potential legal ramifications.
Great landings
🍺🍺🍺😎😎😎
1st!
Is that John on the radio?😂
It sure is!
Hi, cool shots, can I just ask what camera are you filming this with?
I am using the GoPro Max. It's a 360 camera. Aside from less than ideal battery life and the GoPro editing software you have to use when filming in 360, it's a great little camera!
Thank you for responding and for the tips. Be safe out there 😊
