Nightwish doesn't catagorize easily. They can and do go all the way from the more folk element of this one, to the heavy, dark metal of "Master, Passion, Greed." And, they do it all well. Their videos like this are good, but it is in the live videos where they really excel. I am glad that you are continuing your journey with this exceptional band. Enjoy your journey.

They do have some folky elements in some of their songs. You could check out Floor singing, maybe Song Of Myself from Wacken concert, or Seven Days For The Wolves from Wembley. But yes, this song never gets old! The live version (in Tampere) is also pure gold!

Marko (bass/vocals) wrote the music with his first band , Tarot, before he joined Nightwish, but it didn't fit with them. Tuomas (keys/primary NW songwriter) heard him playing it one day and decided it would make a great song. He wrote the lyrics about a lonely lighthouse keeper. This song was included on the 2007 Dark Pasion Play album, their 6th record , and 1st with Anette Olzon(seen here) on lead vocals. You haven't seen current lead singer Floor Jansen yet, she is the one married to Sabaton drummer Hannes van Dahl. The band excels at the live show, please try "Ghost Love Score" live at Wacken 2013 to meet her , with one of the most reacted to songs.

Hi. Interesting your progression, you have a first reaction to a music video with Tarja Turunen (the first singer) and Marco Hietala, and this 2nd reaction to a music video with Marco Hietala in the foreground and Anette Olzon, their 2nd singer, in the background. I'm curious what will come next, I hope your 3rd reaction will be a song with Floor Jansen. If it's going to be a music video (I notice you have this tendency), you have a choice between "Elan" and "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" from album 8 and "Noise" from album 9. I still hope you'll choose a live performance recorded in concert, something from Wacken 2013 would be a good choice in my opinion.
Of course, you have a new subscriber here because you continue to explore.
    All the best, from Romania!

Thank you so much for your nice reaction. Yes, you are right. They are usually very rocky and heavy but here and there you find these kinda gems, where they just do, what they want to do. By the way that was Nightwishs second singer Anette and their bassist Marco singing. If you want to check out what he is cabable of maybe Phantom of the Opera would be a good sugestion. Its also a good introduction to their first Singer Tarja. Have a nice evening!

This one is an anomalie in the Nighwish catalogue but they do have a few others too that are from totally different genre than the symphonic metal they're known for. But that's Nightwish for you, their songs are never the same as the other. They have songs that have lots of symphonic elements, songs that are power metal influenced, songs that are really heavy and mostly their songs are a mix of different genres. One thing about Nighwish is that they are never boring. Their music is always interesting on multiple levels.

It is one of the few songs that is not by keyboardist and mastermind Tuomas. It's by bassist and background singer Marko, the lyrics are by Tuomas. The singer is the second singer Anette (2006-2012). Hannes' wife (2012-now) Floor sang it live.
Before Nightwish, Marko founded the heavy metal band Tarot with his brother, where the two are also the lead singers:
TAROT - Wings Of Darkness (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)
After leaving the band in 2021, he originally didn't want to make music anymore, but is now touring around the world with his prog metal. Here with the first singer Tarja (1996-2005) from Nightwish:
MARKO HIETALA - Left On Mars (feat. Tarja Turunen) (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)
MARKO HIETALA - Dead God's Son (OFFICIAL LYRIC VIDEO)
The folk part is not unusual. The multi-instrumentalist Iroy became a band member specifically for this purpose.
Stylistically, Nigthwish are the co-founders of symphonic metal and are still the most successful representatives to this day. But Tuomas composes in a very versatile way and is always good for a surprise.
If you want it to have more power and because Floor Live is a powerhouse:
Nightwish - Song of Myself LIVE
Fun fact: Marko originally spelled himself with K. After he founded Tarot, he wanted to be cool = American and wrote himself with C. Later he thought it was pretty stupid and now writes himself with K again. Now there are two versions of his Name on the Internet.

Nightwish has a few really good music videos and this is one of them, but I suggest live performances going forward. That's where they really shine especially with their current singer Floor and first singer Tarja. One more thing: expect the unexpected with Nightwish, they don't stick to one style

Yes! Live is always the way to go with Nightwish. They dont have a lot of music videos. The live performance of this song at Tampere with Marko and their current lead vocalist, Floor, is a must see/hear! I like it better than this version, personally. This is their 2nd singer, Anette. Thanks for coming back to Nightwish! Looking forward to more, if you like them! No two songs sound alike! Nightwish is symphonic metal, and they have some folkish vibes in some of their songs, but they do have a lot of heavy stuff too! Hope to see more! Nightwish Army, Deep South division, present and accounted for!

Interesting progression of songs in listening to Nightwish. Certainly for myself, I ended up starting in the middle (2013) mostly because I love the current vocalist who started then. And rather than pulling something out of the studio, watching performances from Wacken 2013 (which are found on their channel) which are live is defining for me (mostly cause this professionally recorded, and the band members have changed since then). The most reacted to performance on YTube is currently from this concert - Ghost Love Score - which is more like listening to a movie soundtrack rather than one song. Long for sure (10 mins) but also as dynamic is the performance there of Ever Dream. I ended up here after listening to your Abi Carter reaction to The Chain and while you compared her to Amy Lee (I guess mostly cause of the song she sang) for me her mastery of her instrument reminded me of Nightwish's current vocalist, Floor Jansen - I most definitely admire her master of control and delivery. Well maybe one day you'll get around to listening to her in one of your reactions, be it with Nightwish or from one of her solo projects. A fine musician.

Yes, Nightwish's singer Floor is married to Sabaton's drummer Hannes.
    Awesome song and video.
You'll also like their "Sleeping Sun". Watch the video with Tarja and also the performance with Floor singing. Both are great. 🎶

I absolutely agree Karin. My favourite performances are End of an Era 2005 (Tarja) and Tampere 2015 (Floor)

The female singer here is their second one, Anette Olzon. Their current singer is Floor Jansen, the one who is married to the Sabaton drummer.
To get a better understanding of where they are today, I'd recommend "Tribal" where the video is a compilation of live performances from the last couple of years. ruclips.net/video/FnMqKZ-Ojt8/видео.html
"Tribal" is a very different song from "The Islander" being much heavier.

Ok, this classic song is probably a very weird start into a Nightwish journey, as it is not their usual stuff.
Ok, the catalog of the best songs of NW is probably up in the hundred, I always say: the best song of NW is the one you just heard.
This having said I recommend 3 songs that always have been a banger for me:
Opener of Wembley 2015: Shudder before the beautiful
    ruclips.net/video/7oQ8sNSYXmQ/видео.html
and from the same concert: 7 days to the wolves
    ruclips.net/video/XvsfwAPbWXc/видео.html
The very special one which everybody is looking for and which is the most requested song on youtube was from Wacken open air 2013 called Ghost love score
    ruclips.net/video/JYjIlHWBAVo/видео.html
So welcome to a journey you will never forget!
    Greetings from Germany

If you want something harder from Nightwish, try "Yours is an Empty Hope" or "Romanticide". Also, their live videos are excellent!

  • @kimmomatikainen1843
    @kimmomatikainen1843 Месяц назад +2

Similar recommendations what you have received earlier for more metal songs. I suppose Romanticide is their most popular more metal song. Master Passion Greed is even heavier. Ghost River for more 80's and early 90's metal vocals and hints of Megadeath vibes. Symphonic metal band but they have a lot of songs that don't have much symphonic in it..just subtle in the background. The Islander is very unusual for them, but they have many individual very unusual songs on their set lists.

FYI music (studio) videos are NOT the way to go with Nightwish unless no Live performance exists, but NW is ALWAYS best Live ,Always :

To go back to the beginning of Nightwish you will have to go back to 1996. Try their original singer Tarja Turunen and the song "Gethsemane"

Hi, they’re more symphonic/orchestral metal than folksy. I believe The Islander was performed with the 2nd female lead singer (the first one, Tarja, was fired in 2005. The 2nd singer was not kept for long. The third and current female lead, Floor Jansen, has been going strong for long over a decade. Finally! The band took a lot of bad publicity for years as a result of the first two firings, as the band gained a rep. For being “A-holes.” Or so I read!!
Love your videos. And your hair!!🌻🌻🥲
