try turning the console off, open the door, then turn the dvd with your finger, close the door, then turn the console back on. repeat as needed. (might work)
Mine can't play DVDs either (it barely even can to be honest which worked for one of my DVDs but is forcing me to enter a code). It also won't read music CDs correctly.
I was having the same problem with my slim. This is what I did play a dvd movie so ps reads it one the movie is playing hit reset button and insert the dvd game then start the game. It might not work the first time just reset the dvd game again.

did you try it without the ps2 memory cards, as you need to remove those, before, you attempt to play the dvds? , ps2 dose play dvd's i have done it a few times, but occassionally, it can be difficult, to get it to work.

I tried this and it actually worked!! strange. i bought a brand new, complete series of The Wonder Years and it wouldn't play. I took the memory cards out and tried it and it actually read the disc... thanks!
any console that plays dvds has two lazers one for games and the other for dvds. there are dvd disc games also they came out later in the ps2s life. one of your lazers is off calibration or could have shorted out. if it don't read dvds and games the lazer is dirty or fryed.
best get you a dvd player and only use it for gaming. as long as it plays games you shouldn't try to fix the dvd lazer unless you have dvd disc games that you want to play.

When I put a DVD in my PS2 it only says PlayStation 2 Disc.

Mine is a fat ps2 (scph 39001) and it has this problem too.

mine doesn't play some but plays others. the discs it wont play play on every other player.
if You have free mcboot disconnect your memory AND reset without the memory, it works for me.
Do you also have that when the dvd is already inserted and you turn the ps2 on, nothing shows up, even not the ps2 startup?

have you tried putting in any old dvds? maybe the ps2 can`t handle new movies and can only handle dvds from the 1900s/2000s.

I had the same thing with my ps2, I got another one from my brother and with that ps2 it works, so it is a weird problem wich probably can't be fixed
