Darwyn Cooke in an all time fav of mine. I had the honour of him spilling his beer on my portfolio about 20 years ago.

The "Jimmy's Bar 24-7" that appears on Page 4 is a subtle nod to Dar's friend: Jimmy Palmiotti.. The same Bar appears on the cover of "Graphic Ink-The DC Comics Art Of Darwyn Cooke".. You can actually see Aquaman sitting at the bar, in one of the panels.
Slam Bradley appeared in Action Comics # 1 as well. Cooke always liked those hard boiled Parker types, and Slam Bradley fit that bill the best from DC characters. This Darwyn Cooke material has not only been reprinted in the Solo Deluxe hardcover (which includes all 12 issues of the series) but also in Graphic Ink: The DC Comics Art of Darwyn Cooke. This book was offered in both hardcover and softcover editions. The later softcover edition contains a handful of covers not printed in the hardcover edition.
Fun fact: in Deja Vu the gang is made up of Selina's crew from the Graphic Novel Selina's Big Score.
We should be grateful for the comics we got from Darwyn Cooke because we lost him far too soon. I just recently read this issue of Solo for the first time, digital version because I can't find a floppy for love or money. Such a fantastic read. I gave a copy of the first Parker book to a non-comic book reading friend awhile back and she absolutely fell in love with it. I mean, how could anyone NOT love Darwyn's work? He was a true master.
Boys! Check out DC New Talent Showcase #19. It’s Darwyn’s first try at comics from the 80’s. He has a 5-6 page little story in that book with a totally different style, it’s very interesting to see what being a graphic designer and storyboard artist did to his style when he eventually came back.

24:00 Cooke used a black envelope and that's what made Chiarello pick it out of the pile... when Chiarello reached him, he just got hired on the Batman Animated team, that's what caused the delay.
I stumbled upon a well-loved copy of this issue at the used-books-for-sale section of my local library and picked it up on a whim. I had heard of him, and of The New Frontier, but this was the first work of his that I read and it blew my socks off, blew my mind, and charged my phone all at once! My knowledge of the comics world at that point was that there was a Gold and Silver age that had long since passed; an alt-Comix scene like R. Crumb; the Jim-Lee-esque era of superhero comics (90's-10's); and YA graphic novels (Blankets, etc.); and that was it. This comic took just the elements of those that would best tell the story and left everything else behind. It really opened my eyes to what a comic could be and as a writer I felt like the gauntlet had been thrown. Darwyn Cooke was an excellent cartoonist and I found out that he's also a great writer, although, from what I've heard is that he wasn't as confident in his writing as his cartooning. Shortly after I found a discounted copy of Parker: The Score and that was it. He had charmed his way into being my favorite cartoonist.
Also:
"World's Window" - I love how he uses color here. The blue, despite being a relatively muted blue, still really pops because of how it's contrasted against the yellow, which the yellow itself gives the strip a wash of nostalgia, like a sepia-tone.
"Everyday Madness" - I thought it was a fun little strip! It was interesting for me to see Cooke flexing his comedic muscles here and I was surprised by just how funny it was. Bummed y'all didn't dig it, but to each his own.
The Frame Story - Here again I personally disagree. I think the frame story does a nice job of guiding the reader from story to story and weaving them together to form a cohesive whole. That opening one page Slam Bradley sequence? The next page is King Faraday calling him on his BS. On that same page Faraday references Gracie, his partner in "King of America". The last panel right before the "King of America" story features the lines: "Women. You win." "Always do." The last panel right before that two-page spread of pin-ups and funnies you have Bradley saying, "Gimme five minutes' peace, willya? Go read the funnies or something." The two-page spread of funnies then rolls into the comedic piece "Everyday Madness." There's a discussion at the bar about the post-9/11 invasion that transitions us into the Question story. You also have the through line of Bradley meeting up with Selina and enjoying a night out together. Plus I love the last line in the last panel. "Y'know, Jimmy, long as we're here...How about I tell you a story?" It's also full of funny little references and cameos. "Jimmy's" is a reference to his friend, writer Jimmy Palmiotti and there's tons of little references to other DC characters seamlessly integrated as well.

I think Darwyn cooke always saw a bit of himself in slam bradley. He was old and obsessed with his work and dames but was full of spirit and class. Cooke also drew slam bradley backups for awhile in I think detective comics? Would have been around the greg rucka era
For me Mr. Cooke was the GOAT. I cannot thank you fellas enough for going through this one. I hope you go through more of his work.
Just an aside: Batman's Deja Vu is basically a retelling/interpretation of Englehart's "night of the stalker" - which has some truly amazing artwork by Sal Amendola and Dick Giordano, btw. One of those stories that is almost always collected in batman anthologies for casual readers.

Yes! please continue with more SOLO issues. This series was so formative and educational for me back in the day. That Eightball analogy is on point, I'd never thought of them this way until now.
I had the privlidge to meet Darwyn at TCAF and he was super nice. I complimented him on his issue of Jonah Hex, where he had Jonah up in snowy Canada fighting corrupt Mounties. He joked and downplayed that issue, but I said it was wonderful, the use of snow in a western, the corruption, the Canadiana, all that. He shook my hand. Dude was a solid and gracious human being.
The compositions and style shifts remind me of "Asterios Polyp." Very interesting.

Cooke designed and executed the opening titles for BATMAN BEYOND. I think that's what he's doing with the titles in this Question story, but as a static design.
My favorite of the Solo series, though all are great. Equal parts breathtaking and heartbreaking. RIP Darwyn.

You really hit my sweet spot with this video. I wore out a copy of Solo 5 poring over those gorgeous pages.
My thought is that he focused on Slam Bradley because the character was a semi-regular in the monthly Catwoman comic he was drawing around the same time. Might be some ideas he had kicking around that wouldn’t have worked in the Catwoman book.
That autobiographical story was brilliant! The style he employed there was reminiscent of Al Wiseman, the first artist to draw the Dennis the Menace comic books, starting in 1953.
There are just a few current comic book artists I think are worthy of this kind of treatment, Greg Smallwood and Chris Samnee being two that immediately come to mind.

Great video, had not seen this Cooke issue before. Another good SOLO edition is Rich Corben, he does a Spectre story in it.
