  • Virtual tour through the Monplaisir Palace. Peterhof, St. Petersburg
Monplaisir (fr. Mon plaisir - "my pleasure") is a palace in Peterhof, an architectural monument in the style of Peter the Great's Baroque of the first quarter of the 18th century.
The palace was built in 1714-1723 at the direction and drawing of Tsar Peter I. The project was developed by Johann Friedrich Braunstein, a student and assistant of Andreas Schlüter in Berlin. Tsar Peter himself chose the location of the new palace, determined its layout and gave instructions on the design of the interiors. According to another version, the composition is based on Schlüter's project, and the entire complex was created in imitation of the small Prussian palaces, including Monbiju near Berlin.
The palace was founded on May 17, 1714 on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland at the very edge of the water. The tsar wanted this small palace, in contrast to the large state residences, to remind him of his beloved Holland, so that the sea could be seen from its windows (although in reality it was a ""Finnish puddle"") and that the palace seemed like a ship ready to sail for a long swimming. It is at this point on the coast that the wetland gives way to an almost seascape. On clear days, Kronstadt is visible from Monplaisir. The palace became the favorite country house of Tsar Peter. When he arrived at Peterhof, he always stayed at Monplaisir. Here he felt like a real European.
A retaining wall was erected for the construction of the palace. The palace consists of a central building (""tent"") with a high roof ""with a break"" in the Dutch style, with a wooden vase on top, and side lusthaus (German Lusthaus - ""Merry House"") with lanterns on the roof. The central “tent” and lusthaus are connected by galleries with huge windows (glazed arcades) at ground level and with small glass windows “in Dutch style”. The walls are made of special, narrow, small-sized bricks (22 x 10 x 5.5 cm). The whitewashed masonry joints of the unplastered walls give the building an unusual and romantic look.
The “promenade” (terrace) of the sea façade is paved with red clinker (extra strong) bricks. The floors of the galleries (each 22 m long) are laid out, in Dutch style, in a checkerboard pattern with slabs of white and black marble. The galleries contain 23 paintings in black lacquered frames. This is part of the collection collected by Tsar Peter during his travels abroad. Among them are the paintings of the beloved Tsar of Amsterdam marine painter Adam Silo, according to which, according to legend, Peter himself took an exam from the students of the Maritime Academy for knowledge of the equipment of ships. Philip Pilman.
The walls of the main, ceremonial hall of Monplaisir are sheathed with oak panels, into which paintings in black frames are mounted. The floor is laid with marble slabs in the Dutch style, ""chess"". This room is reproduced in the famous painting by N. N. Ge ""Peter the First interrogates Tsarevich Alexei Petrovich in Peterhof"" (1872). The walls of the hall are crowned with high walls and a painted plafond with images of the god Apollo, characters from the Italian theater Commedia dell'arte and the heads of the “four winds”: Zephyr, Nota, Borea, Evra. The murals were created in 1718 by Pilman together with Russian apprentices. Sculptural herms from alabaster (allegories of the seasons) in the corners of the padugas are made, according to one version by B.K. Rastrelli the Elder, according to the other - by Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond and Nicolas Pinault.
Tsar Peter, while in France in 1716, invited the French sculptor-decorator and woodcarver Nicolas Pinault, together with the architect Leblond, to Russia to decorate Monplaisir and the Oak Cabinet in the Grand Palace of Peterhof (1717-1720). In 1726, Pino returned to France, where he worked a lot on the interior decoration of private mansions - hotels in the new Rococo style.
