  • THIS Is How The Indiana Fever DEFEATED The Phoenix Mercury.
In Caitlin Clark’s first game, she put on a SHOW against Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury. Although the Indiana Fever were down 15 points in the 3rd quarter, they came back and won the game. How did they do it? Well, Caitlin Clark led that charge, tallying 15 points, 12 assists, and 9 rebounds. The Indiana Fever just PLAY BETTER when the ball is in Caitlin Clark’s hands.

Young man the real truth is that her teammates at Iowa were more aware of being ready to receive a pass from Caitlin - so they made more catches than her current teammates.

Not just rumors, Fever beat reporter Chloe Peterson from the Indianapolis Star said that it's straight from the team that Clark had a migraine for the entire game. Fever coach Sides didn't say 'migraine' but said that Clark didn't let her know about it until after the game and was with the trainer, which is why she missed the postgame presser.
That's typical Clark, just putting her head down and going to work, regardless of what she has to deal with. And ESPN's previously reported that Clark has suffered from migraines for years (but has never made a big deal about it).

When Indiana Fever is down by 10 points at least, the teammates of Caitlin Clark are slowly learning that they should not panic and keep their composure because Caitlin Clark is there on the court and she will make things happen to overcome the lead by getting points in transition, by passing to them when they are open and by shooting her logo 3s to hype up their morale and dampen the spirits of their opponents.

You are a great analyst and so articulate. You know basketball and know how to explain it. Everything good that happens for the Fever happens because Caitlin has the ball in her hands and her teammates are beginning to understand how to be ready in the right spot on the floor to receive the pass from Caitlin. She is making her teammates better. You are so right about Mitchell. If Mitchell plays the right way, let’s Caitlin run the show, she will get open looks always and will have an opportunity to be an all star every year. I could see them being a special duo if Mitchell continues to learn that Caitlin is the catalyst and takes her lead. Caitlin is a visionary on the court - it is special and as she plays with her teammates longer, turnovers will reduce and her assists will continue to rise. And if her teammates continue to learn how to play with her and actually set screens like they did today, Caitlin will continue to get open looks (and she will hit them - today she hit big shots when they needed a run but she was off as she was not feeling well today).

    I love your videos, Carter!!
I agree with everything you said, with one exception. IIRC, Kelsey was in ball-hog mode at the beginning of the game. She brought the ball all the way to the hoop twice, I think, and ignored her teammates. The third time, she cut under the net and circled back out to the right side. CC was open and was waving and Kelsey ignored her and shot an errant 3. She left the game after that didn’t return until the second half, with zero points. In the second half, she was exactly as you described her, e.g. performing as a teammate to her PG-playmaker AND she hit everything she shot, or most everything.
I like to think Sides sat her down for the remainder of the first half, for disregarding instructions and everyone reaped the rewards of Kelsey playing team ball!!
Keep up the great videos and great analysis, Carter!!

@CarterMomon, this is your best video on CC yet. it addresses so many points that fans and haters keep making, and keeps everything in perspective. you need to just link to this video from now on, to address the points that keep coming up: turnovers, and Kelsey Mitchell, and coach Sides, and CC's vision, and how she balances shooting and assisting, and what the Fever need to do to capitalize on her skills and BB IQ.
relatedly, as you get better known, you might want to keep refining your presentation. (I'm the commenter who requested more replays and slo-mo -- you had a lot of nice replays here, but no slo-mo, oh well!) try telling us what to focus on before you play a clip ("notice how Kelsey passes the ball to CC and then immediately heads for an opening on the wing"). also, I love love love your enthusiasm -- don't ever lose that. but try to keep yourself to a couple of repetitions of your favorite phrases ("good things happen"), and maybe do an example of "here's what I mean: they couldn't have predicted that the defense would be open on the left, but they were in a great position to take advantage of it."
you really are an amazing commentator and analyst, and we all benefit from that. I really admire how you've never let the haters wear you down (love your comment to people going off on some bizarre rant: "okay"), and I feel (though the haters will disagree, of course) that you're being really balanced and objective about the fact that CC is amazing, AND needs to improve, and her coach and some of her teammates aren't supporting her (or helping themselves), but she is making a difference for the Fever. which is, as you said, what she wanted to do: not be MVP or the GOAT or pad her stats at all, but make a difference for the Fever and the WNBA and for women's basketball.
which I feel is your goal too (as well as a lot of other basketball-related goals, no doubt, e.g. in the NBA). so thank you!

Transition offense is when they're at their best. Normally mitchell and wheeler kill transition offense because they hold the ball, dont pass, and dribble too long. Bad or nonexistent screens also halt the transition 2 man game. Wheeler didnt play much which kept the ball in clarks hands and mitchell realized she didnt have it and so started feeding clark, just to get it right back and hit her groove with the spot up shooting. Most of the time they played beautiful ball when running the offense through clark.

I was waiting for this game to see if Caitlin and the Fever could win the respect of veteran player Diana Taurasi. To her credit Diana voiced respect in her after game interview, unlike her comments about Caitlin before the season started. Maybe part of the motivation for Fever to WIN this game is to show the veterans they are worthy of respect! It just seemed to me the Fever REALLY wanted this win. That fire just wasn't there in the Strom game when they lost by 12 points!

Dude! You are on your way to GOAT of RUclips basketball analysis! I enjoy your videos so much. I’m new to the WNBA because of CC and there are some really good things here and other good players. I’m here for CC and definitely rooting for the Fever. Love Boston and the potential of Mitchell being a team player. I’m even watching non-Fever WNBA games. I’ve also learned that so many of the other CC basketball videos (not from you) are flagrant fouls they want to focus on the controversies but not the game. Your passion for the game, and the game played well, shines through. ❤🏀⭐️

Good call about the difference between when Caitlin chest-passes and bounce-passes mattering with other players being able to catch her passes. In the previous game against Seattle, we got a look at how powerful her chest-passes are when she fired one off all the way from the opponent's paint to a player who was in the Fever's paint because she'd hauled ass to get there and open. Most female players would throw that pass one-armed like a football for that distance and Caitlin is so strong that she chest-passed the ball like it was shot from a cannon. In this game Caitlin softened her passes to cut down their velocity, and that made a huge difference in her teammates being able to catch her passes more easily. That translated into better chemistry for being able to competently execute plays.
The Fever are going to have to find a balance where Caitlin doesn't have to take enough velocity out of her passes to make them easily intercepted for turnovers and them being soft enough for her teammates to handle. Once they find that balance they'll become a much more formidable and effective team. In one week, the team went from fumbling passes and not being able to execute easy plays to beating a higher-ranked team in an away game.
It also seems that Coach Sides has finally pulled her head out of her butt, and figured out how to find a better balance between Caitlin's passing-power and her teammates being able to handle her passes by having Caitlin soften her passes for them. She also managed to refrain from making any end-game boneheaded play calls that would have cost the Fever their lead and win. I saw an improvement in coaching and playing this week and it made a significant amount of difference.

lovely analysis of her passing -- thank you!
one thing CC did at Iowa, that probably doesn't translate to the pros very easily (someone argued with me online that it won't translate at all), is passing to the open space the receiver could be (should be) heading for -- where they can pick up the pass and not even need to dribble, just take it to the rim. (Hannah Stuelke's specialty at Iowa.)
no, WNBA isn't a great environment for that style of passing -- but if CC's teammates learn to expect those kinds of passes, so CC can learn how and when to make them, and minimize turnovers, then that's another arrow in her quiver, and something else for the defense to worry about. beginning at full-court, the instant CC gets the ball.

This is the first time I've seen your video and I'm blown away with how articulate you are and how perceptive your analysis is. Kudos to you.👋
Caitlin's great court IQ and ability to see the entire court, like a chess grandmaster can see the chessboard, will help her shotmaking. Her pinpoint passing is getting her teammates to hustle down the court and get open more, knowing that the reward will come when Caitlin hits them with the pass. As her teammates score more, opponents can't double team and triple team her. If she gets any opening she can let fly. It's win/win/win. CC/teammates/team will win.
Caitlin is such a smart, generous team leader. Her teammates are realizing that CC is giving up the opportunity to take a shot, to set up her teammates to go for it.

Great breakdown and analysis, and I agree! 100% CC's court vision is such a gift and is sooo entertaining to watch that she's making a believer out of everyone. As her coaches buy into it more, along with the rest of her teammates, this CC vision-lead style of play becomes more and more infectious and rewarding for all who choose to participate.

Just saw an Olympic ad for USA basketball. “America’s greatest basketball players” was the tagline. You know who I saw? Stephen Curry. Jayson Tatum. Lebron James. Among others.
Know who I didn’t see? Diana Taurasi. Britney Griner. Know who else I didn’t see? Caitlin Clark. I wonder why they didn’t feature any women. Oh. Right. They said “America’s greatest basketball players”.
Gotta wonder, tho. If CC22 is on the team you think the women get featured as well? Hmmmmmm.
    Just sayin’ …

Great job! To your point about wanting her to take the shot, there was a whole lot of low % shooting around the league by great guards yesterday. It happens to everyone! As for Kelsey getting to the right spot, Fever players in most games, have not flowed to the open spaces created, when 2 or more of the opponents players are totally preoccupied with Clark. The best teams all know how to do this instinctively and as a result get many wide open shots.

I appreciate your analysis of Caitlin Clark's game vision. My looking a basketball is new. As hockey and baseball fan, without the slightest interest this sport until I watched Caitlin Clark play. Understanding that Logo 3's are a play that most players at any level have part of their skill set. I was impressed. Then I saw her passing game and it reminded me of hockey's Great One. While she may need to fine tune the actual passes, her teammates need learn to receive better. Being a playmaker can be her greatest strength. The scoring systems in baseball and hockey are very different but in both there must often be a playmaker who assists the scorer. Caitlin Clark can be masterful facilitator.
