Almost new pickup... NOT WORKING!?

I ran into a fellow luthier and friend in my area last Saturday. He asked me if I could repair this pickup for him. I'm sure he could have done this himself, but it's a fiddly and frustrating thing to work with this tiny wire, and I don't think he wanted to fool with it.
fun fact....
... this is the second almost new "vintage 52" tele neck pickup I've seen with this same problem in about a months time. If anyone at Fender QA is watching or reading.... I'd check the temperature of the solder irons being used to solder the lead wires into the eyelets. I think it's burning the thin 43 guage wire into 2 pieces at that point.
