    I immediately fell in love with this knife when I seen it.
    Edit: had this now for 8months now ( today June 6 2022) I love it not just how it looks. Changed it to full scandi grind, rounded the choil edges, and modded the sheath a bit but it's a fantastic knife.

    I'm kind of wondering what it would look like if I polished all the blue out, shined it up and did some gun blue/bleach etch pattern on the flats? Never seen a pimped out Habilis. Would be easier if the handles weren't pinned though.

      Am I mental it's 12:18 on New Years Eve and I'm watching a RUclips. Talk about Prepared Mind!!! Cool blade though what the hell is with the price??

    • @futuresonex
      @futuresonex 9 лет назад +3

      A J Taylor For a hand made, high-end bushcraft/survival knife $230 is actually a mid-range price tag. A PLSK-1 from Battlehorse Knives runs $300. The Pathfinder Phantom by Jeff White is $240, and most of the comparably sized Tops knives run in the $200 - $250 range including the extremely popular Silent Hero, Tahoma Field Knife & Tex Creek XL.
      If you're looking for a really good knife with a more affordable price take a look at the Tops Brothers of Bushcraft knife ($110), the Pathfinder Trade Knife ($111) or the Butcher Knife ($150), both from Habilis, or the Trekker ($86), the Bush Knife ($95), the Bush HD ($165) or the Camp King ($175) from Jeff White Knives, the BK-7 from KaBar (>$85) or the SCHF-36, 37 & 38 from Schrade ($35). (All prices are with the lowest cost sheath option.)
      BTW, you weren't the only one watching RUclips at midnight on New Year's Eve. I don't have a life either. ;-)

    • @ajtaylor560

      Gunslinger454 You know I forgot about the sheath and all the accoutrements on it including a separate fine work knife. Big leather sheath like that must run a $100 anyway. So yea maybe I was to quick to judge. I have a couple of custom knives but William Collins is someone I think I'd like to do business with. He makes some pretty good slicers and all of them are no nonsense knives. Check him out on RUclips. Oh yea, Happy New Year!!

    • @live2hunt388
      @live2hunt388 9 лет назад +1

      +Gunslinger454 Handground maybe...but the blade is waterjet cut to make a blank. The blank is outsourced for heat treat. Habilis justifies the price because they have to pay all shops that actually "built" their knife.

    Gotta admit, it's been a LONG while since I've been impressed by a knife. This one broke the mold for sure, it's ridiculously versatile and tame on the hand from what you've shown while still able to do the big tasks like breaking through thicker brush in the absence of a machete and batoning from wide sticks to thin logs. For less than 250 dollars, this is not even a steal, it's an _investment_.
    I'm really really looking forward to when you give Will his just desserts for contaminating your vocabulary with that cheap viral expression. It'll be the Jessica of non-review videos!

  • @DinnerForkTongue
    @DinnerForkTongue 9 лет назад +1

    Oh, one more thing: have you guys noticed that the better a bushcraft knife is, the more primitive it looks? Seriously, the silhouette of this knife looks like something you'd expect out of a pre-historical artifact from the Neolithic or so. It's pretty neat in my book.

    Okay!!! I've been looking at both the HABILIS SRT and the HABILIS BUSHTOOL. I'm trying to decided if the extra 1.5 inches of length and the expanded pummel is worth the extra $30... I've look everywhere on the internet and RUclips and have not found a single comparison of these two. My request, do a comparison. Be the first and watch others follow suite. Thx. Hope you do take the suggestion seriously tho.....

    I was right there with you on the SRT. The first thing I thought when I saw it online was, "Damn, that is one ugly knife!" (That's the first thing I thought about the standard Bushtool too.) However, once once my bank account recovers from Christmas, I'm going to be trying to decide whether to get a Habilis SRT or a Tops Tahoma Field Knife for use as my primary belt knife, a role that is currently filled by a modded BK-7. Aesthetically the TFK is light years ahead of the SRT, but I'm thinking that the SRT may be the more effective tool. (I know that we're not supposed to care about things like aesthetics when looking at survival tools, but I can't help it. I just do.)
    BTW, a modification that I recently made to my new SCHF-37 may be a worthwhile mod for the SRT as well. I used the Work Sharp in its tool grinding mode to round off & polish the sharp edges inside the choil making it far more comfortable to use without gloves.

    Chris the police are just making sure that the wooded wilderness you were in is well protected so you wouldn't have to use that knife. That siren did f'upped your illusion though,I thought you were in the Smokey Mountains but that's what makes your videos great because you are so damn honest. Hey Chris , I love watching all your knife videos but have you ever thought about doing a video on extremely budget friendly options for large bush craft / survival knives ? I'm talking like $30 and under. I think it would be interesting to see what you could come up with and possibly see you find some amazing quality knives for very little money.

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  9 лет назад

      There is a problem with that. Any good teacher will tell you your knife should be the best part of your kit. All the old masters like Kephart stress that it should be the best you can possibly afford. It's TOO important. The LOWEST knives I'd recommend for extremely budget restricted people are the Schrade SCH36/37/38.

      @Zach-cg7dw 9 лет назад +1

      I would be if I kept everything. I can't. There's no way. I keep the stuff I really really like that fills a niche and the excess I trade, sell, or give away to get more stuff to do videos on. I test and review stuff. Not only on camera. The products don't know what your situation is. They aren't going to act any differently if you test good. The exception to that is shelter/clothing. Which is why we did the recent shelter test video. Some stuff had to be done in the cold. Still waiting for one of those polar vortexes to retest the newer Schrade Axe material.

    The other reason knife makers use 1095 is because it is inexpensive compared to other steels. There are more expensive steels when properly heat treated, that will beat the pants off 1095.

    Can someone explain the point of the choil in a knife with such a wide blade? Why not make the blade all the way to the handle? You can then:
    1) hold the knife by the actual handle while doing fine work without "choking up" on it.
    2) still sharpen the whole length of the blade just as well as you can now
    3) have a longer working edge
    Seems to me that choil is robbing you of the extra edge length just by virtue of existing without offering anything in return.

    It's a template cut piece of flat stock that's been tempered and heat treated. With grinding jigs, a this knife could be made in just a few hours. The $300 price is in no way justified. That having been said, however, they did very well with the design for what it is, but I would have liked to see a little more effort put into the build process for the knife.
    Thanks for the review. I always appreciate and enjoy what you do for the community.

      +LIVE2HUNT still, if you had more edge instead of the choil, you wouldn't need to choke up on it, because the edge would be close to your hand while you are holding the knife by its handle. It would not only be more comfortable to hold, but you'd technically have a longer edge. I really don't understand that choil.

    To me that seems a little pricey for a 1095 knife. I love the sheepfoot blade and all. The choil is a bit much for my taste. With that price I would like to get a higher end steel though.

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  9 лет назад

      I wouldn't. Properly heat treated 1095 is my favorite steel. Doesn't mater to me if there are other one out there that cost more. I've beaten the living dogcart out of my thinner Beckers. I trust 1095.

    • @TAGII2
      @TAGII2 9 лет назад

      I just am saying with that price point I would expect a more expensive steel. 1095 is a good steel but not an expensive steel. That being said, I have no doubt that this is a great knife, but I believe with the cost of the steel, it is overpriced.

    I tried the SRT after watching a few reviews.
    The heat treatment sucked, the edge chipped and rolled with minimal use. One of the few times that I felt money was thrown away on a product. Just being truthful, not trying to be a jackass.

    I am a fan of your videos and what you do, but when you scraped up that young tree for tinder was a joke. The tree was completely alive and wasn't even birch

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  9 лет назад +1

      And? It's STILL alive. And yes, I confused beech and birch. Hence that entire preamble where I explained that is my greatest weak area. I still demonstrated the spines ability.

    I'm shocked people would pay that much for 1095. Makes me love Becker and Esee even more. Cool knife though, just overpriced by at least 2x.

    I don't think most of us are going to spend 229 on a knife 150 or below is good

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  9 лет назад +1

      Would you trade for one? I didn't spend $229 for this knife either. But what if you see one on a trade forum? Don't limit yourself with the price tag. I tell people all the time when I'm explaining things like the Law Of Attraction that you should never tell yourself you can't have something based on what you can afford with your paycheck. I've seen it over and over and over. Right place at the right time. Trades, Gifts, Giveaways, etc. Don't write off good tools just because they are ore then you would usually spend.
