- Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has admitted that a lack of military manpower is sapping its forces' morale.
He was speaking as new laws to boost army recruitment come into effect.
Prisoners will now be allowed to join, and fines have gone up for men who ignore the order to fight.
Ukraine’s forces are short on weapons and are trying to shore up a weakened front line. They are facing growing military pressure from Russia, which has made its largest territorial gains in the country in 18 months.

During only the first year of the war (2022) I painstakingly tracked (open source) Ukrainian obituaries of soldiers, and stopped counting near the end of the year, it was just over 121,000 deaths. 2023 was far bloodier for Ukrainians than 2022, and this year has been more of the same. The math adds up quite well.

Zelensky was the first to send prisoners to the front at the end of March 2022. He personally talked about it in his video diary.

It is in the Kiev memorandum - article 6 - which is bundled with the Budapest memorandum on the United Nations website if you want to check.

Exactly, my father was drafted 2 weeks after high school in New York State for WW2. He was 17 with a November 28 birthday. They turned him into an army medic in no time.
