i do purge air from zones offen i never do a chem flush on a hydronic syetem no need its stagnet water in system all you need to do is a good purge and it will replace and flush the whole system out .on a steam system sometime you can add chemicles to help out with build up
Listen to the man keep temps up so you don't freeze up. Hey Steven that was another good one. People try save only to cause themselves grief that's to bad and a hard lesson to learn!
Great video's. One thing I noticed when my pipes froze last year ( winter 2014-15 w/-7F ambient temps) was to shoot the area with a therm IR gun. I was able to shoot the pip to see exactly where the frozen area was. It happened to be right at the corner of two outside walls. When I shot the corner of the wall itself where the baseboard joins (behind the baseboard heat) - the temps registered 18F coming in. There was a small amount of air infiltrating right at the corner of the walls - directly behind where the pipe froze. Luckily I was able to thaw out the pipe gradually with a hair dryer - again the therm IR gun was worth it's weight in gold. To fix this going fwd - I bought a 90 corner pipe insulation piece - placed it over the 90 pipe elbow - then boxed off the corner with cardboard - and spray foamed the corner - completely encapsulating the corner - along with the pipe. Although my house is old(1870) this part of the wall did have insulation in it - but cold air was still coming in - hitting the pipe. I'm thinking (hoping) that the spray foam along with 90 elbow pipe insulation will never let that corner freeze up. Did this with other corners in my house where the IR gun showed air seepage. There may be other places air is coming in - but as long as it doesn't directly hit the pipe - it's not as destructive.
+jjs777fzr as long as the heat is turned up it will never freeze but sealing up all the badly leaking spots only makes sense . to prevent future freeze ups good luck with it
Another good video Steve. I hate to think about how much damage water can do in a home. Hey question....I'm noticing the splits on your calls are always on the bottom of the pipe. Is there a reason for this? Why not the top or sides?
Nicholas CeeA we kist had a toilet overflow dah to replace the whole lower level floating hard wood flooring light fixtures and countless drywall is patching
Might have had a previous leak right there. It's wise to use a bleeder coupling to release the steam as you solder so the solder doesn't get pushed out from the pressure building up
I guess you are right, having a freeze up could mean more trouble in the future, no way of knowing if there are more joints/pipes ready to pop open. After watching your videos, I am convinced my two zone system is not properly bled which might explain its marginal heat output compared to the flippin high gas bills...
Seeing that old bleeder union suggests this was not the first freeze up in that room (Or so you installed such in another case)? Have to mention: Went to a DOCTOR'S Tri-level home in 1976. He had just moved out and was selling it. Temperature outside -20F. Beautiful brick home with horseshoe drive around to front door... The clown turned the stat down to 55 on his gas hot water 3 zone system with auto feed. It froze; broke and shutdown, and water flowed. Result: Lowest level looked like an ice cave. Middle level had steamed up and walls soaked-froze, etc. Upstairs water running so all floors buckled, etc. Ruined home.
Don't people ever learn. Every year I see people pushing cars, spinning tires and news reporters telling us how bad it is. I rather pay a dollar or two more and drip my water faucets. I repaired 2 neighbors pipe's for free only once. After that they pay. Prevention is always cheaper than repairs.
the best way to learn is the hard way .she said she would leave the heat on 65 from now on...she said she had the water fausets dripping but did;nt thing of the second floor heating.she way a nice lady just did;nt know usally her husband did that stuff he recienly died she said she got off easy only one leak and the damage was not so bad.
Great job, it's amazing what women don't learn from their husbands, and just as amazing what we don't learn from them. They will freeze to death and we will starve to death. Keep up the good work.
Good job Steve. I have always hated those baseboard fin heat. One of my first jobs when I started doing hvac in 1985 was to fix a bunch of leaks in baseboard heat just like that. Always enjoy your videos bud.
When the pipe is still wet and don't have the time to get it dry I wad up some white bread and jam it in the line before I sweat the pipe. Then when I'm done open a faucet with the aerator off and the bread comes right out. Or dissolves in the line. Use map gas too. Heats up much faster.
Nice videos Steve I am a mechanical engineer , mostly power systems .I have been watching your videos for over a year now and think your approach to problem solving is top shelf thanks
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Great job Steven like all ways
God bless you
Nice job Steve.
thats rob
How many blue gloves did you go though? I'm in my 60's and I'm STILL trying to convince myself to use them more often... LOL
if you ever do a power flush or a chem flush of a full heating system will you put a video up am interested on how and what gets done

so is life thats what experience is,,,, things you don't want to do again

Steve do those heat a room with no fins?
Wow, nice job Steve, 4 years ago! Next Level!

Nicholas CeeA pipe spit in all spots .no rime or reason .i have seen top ,sides, bottom .... this videos its just on the bottom
that the way it goes, who knows.

Great video of real world situation!
I guess they pulled the carpet up to prevent mold growth.
Great video Steve, quick question why was there a drain coupling in the middle of the run?
Might have had a previous leak right there. It's wise to use a bleeder coupling to release the steam as you solder so the solder doesn't get pushed out from the pressure building up
It's that cold front for the arctic North! How are you staying warm and keeping other people warm, Steve?
cold here today

+DOLRED yes it can happen .it not the freeze that gets them it the thugh and flood after it melts that will get them every time
I like that comment, "Duct tape is over rated!". lol

My duct tape never leaks...
Your a busy man in this weather Steven! Off to the next flood!
i had to replace a gas furnace today for freeze up tomorrow i can just feel it

thanks for responding txtech
must have been that cheap flea market duct tape, not that good 3m stuff. I heard the 3m stuff is good to 30 psi. lol
i am supriced the duct tape was not holding lol
That's not the first time that line froze and broke...
+Jason Greek probably not .
Ordered a cordless grinder from Milwaukee waiting for UPS to bring it lol
just be carefull with it .with no gaurd
