Wild Australian magpie has learnt a cheeky new trick!

  • Hero's back must look different on camera for some reason because in real life it is definitely the mottled grey colour of a female magpie and not the pure white of a male magpie. She often visits me with a male magpie so it's easy for me to see this in real life. I also have a video coming up where I compare her with a male magpie to show the difference 🙂

    I used to live on acreage in Northern NSW (Australia). A baby Magpie had fallen from it's nest in a nearby tree, so I put him back in his nest. The next day, the father of the chick flew to my back door and introduced himself, this became a daily occurrence. Some months later while I was outside he returned with the chick I had rescued, who immediately flew onto my outstretched arm. These meetings continued on a regular basis. Over the next 10 years, and subsequent generations of my rescued Magpie did the same as the offspring grew, and became a parent they introduced me to their new chicks. I no longer live at that location but fondly remember the bond I had with the Magpies and how intelligent they are.

      Are you certain it fell from nest. The parents arre known to "deposit" their chick in a safe place where they know it will be looked after. They do this in times where nearby ground food supply might be lacking. A chick turned up near our front door. We have three families that drop by most days for their treats but we try to not get in the habit of this knowing they need to learn their natural instincts. We should avoid putting food in their mouths so they learn properly. The chick was moved further away but parents still drop in for a feed which they fly off with to feed the young one.
      They are the pick of several species arond our area, a chorus of 3-4 of them is unbelievable to hear.

      Awesome story--what a great experience! There have been experiments done showing that crows (very closely related to European magpies, if not the Aussie version--although they behave so similarly) can indeed recognize the faces of individual humans, and recall which ones are friendly (or at least harmless) and which ones have engaged in threatening (experimentally threatening, so no harm was done) behavior toward crows. And there even seems to be evidence that they can somehow communicate to other crows which humans are bad 'uns: one experimenter who used different masks to test crow responses reported that the "threatening" mask--no matter who wore it, he recruited various students to play the part to try to determine if crows used facial recognition, or more generalized clues--got harassment from far more crows than had been threatened by it. So your magpies may well have not only recognized you as a "friend," but also told their feathered friends that you were good folks to hang out with.

    Clearly, part of the problem is that you're bribing the bird to leave, thus reinforcing the coming-in behaviour.
    One possible course would be to leave the bird there, and use another way to get back outside to where the other birds would be fed within the view of the magpie. This, of course, would depend on the magpie not following you further into the house, and also on the bird being bright enough to recognise the consequences of coming inside.
    It also might just result in your having a magpie that follows you everywhere.

    Crows and magpies have great memories as well. I've heard stories of people who fed them, they were tame like these ones, then they moved away. Came back to the area months or YEARS later and the same birds came right up to them like, hey where the hell have you been my friend!!!

      Yes! Some time last year or the year before Hero (in this video) disappeared for months. I thought she was gone forever. Then one day we saw eachother and both excitedly ran over to eachother :) Another magpie was bullying her and must have claimed the territory for awhile.

    I remember a few years ago being in a park in Perth Australia and 2 kookaburras, a duck and 2 magpies came up to us and hung out: I live in the UK and the magpies are completely different - even the sounds they make: Australian magpies make a kind of mild, "watery" cooing sound - while our's sound like an old hag that just dropped something on her toe. TBH they even seem like a completely different species of bird. Our's are quite aggressive and they even look different physically: for some reason, to me, there is something pre-historic looking about Australian magpies but I still can't make out what it is.

    • @HorseWithNoUsername
      @HorseWithNoUsername Год назад

      That's because they are a different species - Aussie maggies are passerines, not corvids. Also, Kookas aren't native to Perth - they're a pest from over east!

    I got to remove my heart monitor today, and will be shipping it back. I've started physical therapy and occupational therapy. Still not very steady on my feet. It's rather frustrating, honestly. I still don't really have much of an appetite, which for me is very strange, as I like to eat. I'm lucky if I can choke down a couple slices of toast. I guess this is going to be a very long recovery. I also found out I have a heart murmur. Apparently, it's genetic; my dad has ir, my brother has it and I think my mum has it.
    Well, I 'm worn out again so I'm going to go to sleep. Chat soon.

    But soon, he may learn that the food is inside the bag... and start coming inside and jumping in the bag to gorge on the unlimited birb seed supply.
