Just saw his show on Friday in CT and he did this song and it was so amazing, the crowd went nuts! They are incredible!! I would have never of heard of him, if I didn’t go see Willie Nelson in September when he was an opener! He blew me away!!

Billy as continued to grow musically and continues to surprise. Saw him 3 days ago and one instrumental section was more like King Crimson than Bluegrass.

In the zone between "Progressive Bluegrass" and a "Jam Band" like String Cheese Incident or The Greatful Dead - at least on this song. They can and do play hardcore traditional bluegrass, and occasional y even an entire evening of such, but generally they don't play the same set every night. They have a huge repertoire. Each member of the band has been playing bluegrass since their tween years (at least).

Billy's main influence was Doc Watson and I believe he sounds older because of the Doc Watson influence.

Mandolins are tuned differently than guitars.from low to high it is G, D, A, E. The strings are paired so it’s actually GG, DD, AA , EE

Some call this "proggrass", progressive bluegrass. I just call it amazing.

Bluegrass doesn't mostly have drummers and Billy's band doesn't use one.he has a different Mandolin player now,but the rest of the band is the same.

JamGrass or Newgrass would be the term I would use...Billy got his name from his dying aunt who called him Billy Strings because he could play anything with strings...check out Billy playing with Marcus King at Carter Guitar in Nashville where they do a great cover of Summertime using the instruments off the walls of Carter...he is currently on tour playing large venues and stadium events.

Psychedelic bluegrass. Billy played in a metal band as a teen. The influence is there. Billy and his band are amazing. I'm seeing them in NC in December!!!

If you want some more modern bluegrass, check out Trampled by Turtles, Devil Makes Three, or Old Crow Medicine Show :) You'll find the genre pretty distinctly divided between old time stuff and the younger generation's take on the genre, sometimes called "newgrass". All my recommendations there are modern bands. If you want an old time bluegrass song, Fox On the Run by Bill Emerson is a great example.

Always enjoy watching folk enjoy Billy's masterful flat-picking. Especially thru this, his #PanteraBluegrass masterpiece! This is one of my favourite live music captures on the web. Superb. :)
p.s. the excellent Michael Palmisano uploaded a great breakdown of this performance on his channel for anyone who'd like to know more. ;)

This song tells of his early life and his escape from being surrounded by heavy drugs.
Billy now has added a fiddle player.

While the instruments are traditional bluegrass, the song really wasn’t. Bluegrass typically uses mostly standard major chords, this song is using some minor key progressions to changes the “tone” of the song. Bluegrass songs tend to always sound happy while what Billy did with this song was create a more somber tone with some minor chords and single note progressions in the solos

They have added a fiddle player full-time as of July 2022 with consequent intensity boost.

Billy is the singer. Got the name Strings from his aunt. He's played since he was 3. Taught by his dad. He's a true prodigy.
