@Michael Terrell II bunkai is nothing like sparring. The bunkai is a pre-set list of actions(blocks/strikes/throws) that the martial artists perform. It shouldn't be compared with a sparring (maybe you were thinking of kumite) as it's a completely different excercise with different goals.
@@Chuck-yt7iq I don't know what's mall karate, but fighting system includes striking, throwing and ground techniques. There's light contact encounters (like in wkf) and full contact (like in Yoseikan Budo, Kudo, ufc, bellator..)
It's one of many different categories where a duo has to show a long practiced choreografie. There are like 20 different attacks with different defense moves. In the beginning the refere tells a number and the duo has to show the requested combo. The sitting judges then give points on how well done it was executed. There are other categories too, where they do real sparring or fighting. This is in my opinion more an artistic style of jujutsu. But impressive non the less.
I used to do this in the youth ranks and that was good fun - I was always fighting for the medals on the national championships. It was not so hard as there weren't too many contenders anyway. I don't have any issues with kata and bunkai at all, and there is probably even a place for duo games, but the acting part here looks gay to me now. Even the way they greet and move is overacted. The formula should be revised so that it becomes clean what it is about: demonstrating realistic techniques without killing your partner. So they can jump when thrown, but don't make it acrobatics. The commentator also doesn't really seem to know what he's talking about. He just gives generic comments, says nothing about the techniques applied. Elbow to the face?... that's empi. No joint locks? Has he even been watching?
