    I enjoy watching your interpretations of your schools XYQ and youve had me thinking at length on several things and Ive enjoyed my exploration of your ideas.. and Ive been training now for +20yrs so.. thankyou for sharing..
    I do however take issue with your critique of the opening fist drawing back in up in front of the chin as a "mistake". The key thing beginners need to understand is context, how youve demonstrated its "weaknesses" is not how anyone with knowledge would actually use it. Youve critised it using medium/long range when if anything it has true value inside and over only short range.. The most important thing for beginners is to build the foundation of anatomical alignment, relaxation and strength, body harmony, etc etc.. do the basics often and well and then do more of them....
    As I see it youve started a pretty detailed technical discussion of a basic structure out of context. Im a believer that many of the students questions a self answered thru lots of repetition of the basics.. Too much talk too early is self-defeating as it can close doors to self-discovery.. once this awakening happens then the advanced stuff makes so much more sense...
    Just my 2cents.. pls dont take my comments as hostile, while I practise a different school ultimately in the end we all have no shape anyway as we make our kung-fu our own (if we practise hard enough) so please keep em coming. I may not agree but youve got me thinking...

    Videos like this that correct common mistakes and show why things are done the way they are are hugely helpful to those of us who love Xing Yi but dont have access to actual classes and so are stuck learning from videos. Thank you immensely for this.

      +Christopher Williams You're very welcome. Our ambition is to revolutionise how the internet can be used to teach martial arts balancing material with contact and to reach those who are unfortunate and don't have access to a xing yi instructor. We have way more youtube vids coming up in the pipeline and we are working very hard on our online training material. Stay tuned! :)

    I was taught similar concepts to these when I learnt (rather humbly) some Xing Yi in china. Specifically about Zuan, however I would add that Zuan is simply spiralling energy. The spiral starts in the body, travels down the arm and is released on impact with a good snappy quality. I was told that bare hand practice is always secondary to a weapon and every single movement has a weapon based application. With Zuan, twisting on impact with a sword, opens the wound, and allows the sword to be withdrawn easier.
    Whilst this video is basic, I would like to see more of what Paul has to offer.

    I totally not agree with yout third mistake. Maybe you dont know, but in Hebei xingyi, there are up to 5 different versions of any of the element. My teacher here in Hangzhou ( who is 78, from hebei) teach us those.
    For example with pi. The first pi goes at the same time you step with the front foot, you step with your toes leveled, not like with the heel first ( can not move the back leg), this is for people who are close, the second pi is is also a sliding step with the fornt leg but you hit wen your back leg does the step.
    Does this makes sense?

    • @Xingyiacademy
      @Xingyiacademy  9 лет назад +2

      san5324 Yes there are many variations of the elements, more than 5 in some cases. Try applying your Pi Quan in sparring or fighting and experiment with the variations, see which ones work best. Thanks for watching.

      I use it alot, also, in hebei xingyi there is a total of 3 taolu that all together are considered to be the 5 elements linkin form, other xinhyi only has one.. I love the difference between them.

    What lineage is this supposed to be? I would start with a presentation of 5 element applications, so that ppl can see whether your XYQ holds water. To be honest, I'm not convinced at this point.

      +Muttoza linage will not save your life, of course you have to know where your style came from, but you have to apply today. make work. just my view bro

      @Muttoza 9 лет назад +1

      I'm much more concerned with efficiency than lineage, just so you know. It's just that I wasn't convinced at first... However, after watching a few videos I have to admit that I like some of the ideas and applications.

    • @Xingyiacademy
      @Xingyiacademy  9 лет назад

      +Muttoza Thanks for watching. I think the more people see the more things will become clearer as to how we connect our training and progress. Our school is a fusion of three lines of Xing Yi Quan, one of which was a family line, one a more orthodox and the other is a bit of mystery.

    You are simply confusing/overlapping "martial combatives" with the true reason for form. Form is to train habit and good body mechanics so good combat body mechanics *manifest* when you're under stress, not to mention energy (chi) work. 4:58 of course it's not effective because you're not driving your core with your legs, i.e. you're not using you're whole body for power (your hips even pop backwards). You are not connected to the earth so yea, you have to use your arm's bicep. Then @5:23 you actually use your legs and core and declare the movement has striking power. @6:38 this is wood (almost phoenix fist) not water but your elbow is too high. The water spiral has utility beyond striking. Form is not always "do this in a combative situation." You don't get to chose what you do in a real stress situation.

    • @Xingyiacademy
      @Xingyiacademy  9 лет назад +5

      Rich D Rich, of course this is a demonstration and you can train certain skills in isolation, however "you can only fight the way you practice" (I believe this was said by Miyamoto Musashi), so you should always be aware of combative application. And I agree Zuan does have utility beyond striking but that's not what we're showing here, we'll have much more to show as we put more videos and information online. The reason for training is to be able to utilize skills within a combative situation, with practice you can use what was shown combatively, and more effectively than in a simple demo. I am trying to provide people with information that will make their xing yi more combat effective, I always advocate that people go and test everything, even those things I say, so if something doesn't work for you then you can discard it. Thanks for watching and keep checking back for more.

    10:30 is a way to explain "打人如走路” (beating like walking), but I think it only could be successful when you could make a sneak attack...

    your Xing yi is more reminiscent of Taiji IMO the tigers head embrace you explain resembles a basic understanding of peng energy which while it should be present in all of the internal martial arts it is overemphasized and you are ignoring the elbows rubbing ribs.

    • @Xingyiacademy
      @Xingyiacademy  8 лет назад +2

      +ukguy Cool man. Thanks for watching. Regarding the elbows. I've heard too many interpretations from many different schools and lineages to follow an absolute on this. The view we express is more, the elbows don't go behind the ribs and the elbows are relaxed and have a downwards structured pressure inwards towards the ribs. In our concept of tiger embrace, the elbows don't point out away from the ribs, they relax and point downwards. This is what we have experienced to be practical and extremely effective for practical and natural defense. Our Animal methods build on this concept.
      I've seen some effective looking xing yi where the elbows essentially rub the ribs however, its just not our lineages expression. A different route to the same goal of effective ima so to speak. Its all good though. I enjoy watching and learning from different styles of Xing Yi Quan.
      We have a lot more videos on the channel now so be sure to check them out. Also, if you are in the UK, be sure to message me if you want to come train and have a chat. Always looking to meet up with those who have a passion for Xing Yi.

    Just wanted say in shanxi lineage the hands draw in,forearms rubbing the body as they rise to generate chi.stand in a san ti rub your foreams along your lower rib cage in a circular motion as you breathe deep and youll understand,so much chi is generated from this area. I do agree about your movement being telegraphed and to close creates distance,i guess its about time and place to use it,thanks for the vid.

    • @Xingyiacademy

      +Neal Cummings Thanks for watching and thanks for the comments. Everything is about context and this video was mainly aimed at the beginner transitioning from form into usage. As you progress things become smaller and more internalised, more options become available. But a lot of people get stuck before this stage because they simply can't make anything work. This is just one step along that process and I would agree that there are other ways to do these movements and that a lot of energy is generated from the area around the upper waist. Thanks again.
