One of the few times Darius gives good advice.
Whats even more funny is the mirror in real life. The US Army does similar, in that "reconnaissance force" doesn't necessarily mean something light, fast and stealthy, but instead just something mobile and with a radio. A battalion of M1A2's qualifies, and is often used in that role.

I like that they at no point claim to have the most indomitable fighting spirit, insurmountable skills, or inspiring (or competent) leadership. Lyrans are self-aware like that, they keep it real. They have piles of money, and they have the giant guns they bought with that money. It's the rest of the factions that have to use crutches like "skill" to compensate for lacking enough money.
There is an apocryphal, supposed quote from a German soldier from WWII: "A German Tiger is easily worth 10 Shermans... but you always had 11."

There’s a great series called Tex Talks BattleTech that should help learn the lore. Most of the series focuses just on a single BattleMech design, both the machine itself and the in-universe historical context for its creation, but he did a massive two parter on an event known as the Amaris Civil War which is what could be called the setting’s major inciting incident (people have compared it to what the Horus Heresy did in Warhammer 40k, at least as far as its importance to the setting’s present day).
