Whats even more funny is the mirror in real life. The US Army does similar, in that "reconnaissance force" doesn't necessarily mean something light, fast and stealthy, but instead just something mobile and with a radio. A battalion of M1A2's qualifies, and is often used in that role.

There’s a great series called Tex Talks BattleTech that should help learn the lore. Most of the series focuses just on a single BattleMech design, both the machine itself and the in-universe historical context for its creation, but he did a massive two parter on an event known as the Amaris Civil War which is what could be called the setting’s major inciting incident (people have compared it to what the Horus Heresy did in Warhammer 40k, at least as far as its importance to the setting’s present day).
For a quicker intro there’s an overview of the Inner Sphere (titled “BattleTech 101: The Great Houses of the Inner Sphere”) which, if nothing else, should give you background for what this song’s saying about the Lyran Commonwealth.

The Lyran Commonwealth is the richest of the Great House nations in the BattleTech universe. Due to massive trade networks, and amazing colonization drives as well as some of the most entrenched industrial zones in the galaxy, only outdone by Terra itself, the Lyran's can always afford to replace their loses. With enough time.
In the Lyran Commonwealth money rules all. Ludicrous amounts of money fuel one of the largest and most expensive militaries in the galaxy. Thankfully for their neighbors, this means that money also decides who's in charge. Though even if you out plan them, you'll still need to fight them, and they can easily replace any losses they take and send another wave.

The other way could also be called the Steiner way - or Lyran way, which is the same. Because nothing screams "scouting" as several heavy mechs erasing anything they lay their visors on.
But I mean - it gets the job done, right? Enemy positions were scouted. And the fire that burns through their ruins just makes the whole scouting much easier. Once again the Steiner way was proven better!
