You mentioned cabs being nasty.... coming from mechanical side and supplying said locomotives... wish some of the crews would clean after them selves..

Bring lots of food and snacks guys ! 22 year rail here , nothing worse than being stuck in the middle of nowhere for 18 hours without food !

Red Oxx is the Cadillac of grips for railroaders. Also Autumn Creek is really popular and more affordable.

I highly suggest finding a framed pack. The durability and warranty of those bags are great. But with the weight that are put in our bags you need more support.

I don’t own one but although I see your point about better support, we don’t go rucking with our grip. Sure, I’ve had to walk to my train, at times, a little farther than normal, but I wouldn’t consider this an issue at all. To and from the train for most of us takes a couple of minutes, if that, each time

Like other have stated, Autumn Creek is no longer an option. They are no longer in business which is unfortunate for those who purchased a backpack since they will no longer be repaired for free.

As dear old dad pointed out you can always take off a piece of clothing but you can't put it on if you didn't bring it with you. Also all so true is that second pair of gloves because when you least expect it is when you'll need it

I remember dads grip He had a light , couple of r/r books, flairs, pens, and a shave kit. That’s about all he had. Never had food Or winter clothes

Get a EZ Red when you need 2 hands. It’s a light it goes around your neck it just goes around the back part and looks forward with you and you can flick that light on and you have light on your neck very handy and rechargeable

One thing to note I separate my local keys from foreign railroad keys on separate key rings that way if I happen to lose them on a local when your using them the most often you don't lose everything.

Id be more than willing to give advice on these as well. A good bag like this is a must. To be honest. Im in the process of building to seperate bags for the conductor roll. Im working to build my road bag and a local bag. All I would need to switch between the 2 is my tablet and radio. Also with the gaskets for rail cars. I use a chest pack for my radio and I put 4 or 5 gaskets on my chest pack strap. Plus it allows for me to play with them and make them more pliable.
