Wow, excellent video depicting the change in GSD. I do not breed for the sloped/roached appearance so none of my dogs have the extreme looks of those seen. Amazing vid!
Chicagok9gal I don't know why you got thumbs down on your comment. I completely agree with you. I have a young Czech male, out of Mambo z Pohranicni Straze...almost 100% czech. He's doing great in training, we're going to do personal protection work once he starts to mature mentally. He is not over the top in drive, but more so close to high, but not so high that he's hectic.
Excellent video!!! Thanks very much for posting this. My German Shepherds (see my videos) have in their bloodlines the great dogs which show up at 1:53 and 2:09 in this video. "These are German Shepherds and all the rest are just dogs."
@Swifteagle True, I've seen some nice looking specimens with straighter, longer legs and very athletic builds at dog parks. Invariably when I ask their owners they tell me they came from European working stock.
Some of the ones we have in Australia are Str8 back when standing then slanted in show stance I feel they look more attractive then the ones with to much extension
Why in like every pic the dogs back lag is bent and he looks almost as hes falling. I have a sheppard and shes 14... and doesnt even look like that. Also why do sheppards back legs always seem to go out? no other breeds really have this problem.
@Danny022479 So true. The old time GSD looked a lot like today's Belgian Malinois and was far more structurally sound, which is evidenced by the fact that nowadays law enforcement agencies and most military organizations are getting away from German Shepherds and using the Malinois instead.
....and... 2050..."the cripple von this is a pedigree german shepherd"... with no back legs! .... a champion at it's best... soon they will judge them according to how nice wheelchair they have... the shiniest wheelchair wins! how incredibly sad!!!
@HACKA33 Ah, yes, that is a beautiful animal. A little too short in the leg for my taste but at least the hindquarters do not suffer from too extreme an angulation and the dog has a wonderfully full coat.
I had once considered getting a Malinois or a Dutch Shepherd, though I don't think I'll ever stray away from the German Shepherd breed.....I'll have to be very selective in what I choose though with a female. I'm looking at a possible Puck vom Grafental litter later this year as I would like a DDR female from him....but theres a few other litters I'm looking at due late this year. I might find something that would compliment my Mambo son more so instead. I'm also in the states now.
i totally agree with gdr352...the german shepherd dog was meant to be a utility dog not a show dog....quotes from max von stephanitz himself..take this trouble for me make sure my shepherd dog REMAINS A WORKING DOG for i have struggled all my life for that aim.....he also says...EFFICENCY FOR WORK MUST COUNT FOR MORE with the shepherd dog breeder than the honors of the show ring..the queen of the ballroom is generally not a good mother....so there you have it from the man who founded the breed.
@JackKangaroo1 I hope you get to find a good working line german shepherd in your Area.... I am sure there must be a good breeder out there. I like the working lines, as for the showlines I feel they are ugly with such a curve back, what a shame. regards
If the Military and Police can no longer use this dog, why not a Shiloh Shepherd? The whole point of breeding that dog was to restore the old GSD from long ago. And it totally looks like the true GSD! It has the larger head, and it's larger and does not have the sloping back. I would hate to see this breed also go down hill from careless breeding.
When I was a kid in the 1950s and early 1960s I grew up watching Rin Tin Tin and to me the German Shepherd was THE ULTIMATE dog. I had a gorgeous GSD as a teenager. He was whelped in 1960 when the breed was still agile and athletic. But I'd never get a GSD now. I see them at dog shows, virtual cripples dragging their hind legs on the ground. The next step will be to put them in little wheel chairs because they are nearly paraplegic already. What a shame to ruin a great breed this way.
GDR352 American stock are not even bred to work much anymore. They are bred to be HUGE ....or look pretty for the most part. I have a nice Czech line GSD out of two well known GSDs from the Czech republic. Most American lines I see are also well over 100 lbs...or above 26 inches at the shoulders...well above the standards. Even German show lines are getting horrible. I'm sticking to my Czech working lines....and also I'm getting a nice 100% Eastern German working line female later this year.
I would not say they are abandoning the GSD for the Malinois, there are still many reasons why GSDs make better police dogs than Malinois. IF you have a good trainer. They are better dogs, Malinois are more just very prey-driven and not civil. Easier/faster to train, but not necessarily better! Go with a Czech lines GSD and you will find great dogs
that's not what i meant. asking a question like "are these dogs violent?" is complete ignorance. it's not just a dumb question about the german shepherd as a breed, but a dumb question in general.
how far will the breeders go? till the dogs have no back legs? so they would show them at their fancy parades on wheelchairs.... german shepherd used to be the greatest dog!!!
@theidesofjanuary please don't get any type of dog, not even a maltese if you are going to o "reasearch" over youtube comments. do the animal a favour and just dont get it.
i think GRD352 is right thats why i perfer the knpv mix breeds its awfull how the gdr have become the only dogs for me are malli and dutchies they didnt only lose they're natural body but there carackter too its not a police dog anymore a good german shephard is very hard too find these days
Agree with YINGYANGCHING. Why do you breed this terrible sloping back/over angulation. Even though there probably hip scored they look deformed. I love the breed soooooo much and find it heart breaking.
I also question the maker of this video. This in no way shows the real history of the breed. This is purely a show line history....and not of the REAL German Shepherd dogs. Where are the sables, blacks, bi colors, all of the Czech, East or West German working lines who are more known for doing police work. For having more courage, faster harder hits, still great around strangers or children, but more capable of the work than show lines. Who also have straighter backs for the most part also.
think it is absolutely disgusting what people are doing to the once so beautiful breed, but the good ones are still out there just hard to find. check out my site i have a HANDSOME boy that is so much like the Standered it aint funny, when i show him i get laughed at beacuse he is "different" when really he is the proper german shepherd
ok, how am i a huge hypocrite? and this is the INTERNET! do u really expect every1 to be as perfect as u think u are nd make sure they have spelled everything correctly and that they hav put all their commas nd such in all the rite places? i understand wot u meant now, yes, u should have rephrased. I apologize for bein rude where it wasn't necesarry, I was tryin 2 stick up for breeders i thought u were insulting, but u can't blame me for the fact that u didn't right everythin u meant.
The first GSD's did not have sloped backs. That has been bred in to the showlines over the years and favored for such. I prefer the flat back working lines, just my opinion. But not every GSD should have a sloped back.
Amazing, thanks for sharing this...I'm partial to the older style dogs myself without the angulation as thats how my dogs are.
Wow, excellent video depicting the change in GSD. I do not breed for the sloped/roached appearance so none of my dogs have the extreme looks of those seen. Amazing vid!
I still love Uran wildsteigerland.
Chicagok9gal I don't know why you got thumbs down on your comment. I completely agree with you. I have a young Czech male, out of Mambo z Pohranicni Straze...almost 100% czech. the best dogs you can ever ...
Excellent video!!!

"These are German Shepherds and all the rest are just dogs."
Klodo von Boxberg, absolutely stunning.....now we have the frog dog.
My dog is the granddaughter of Ursus von Batu pictured at 3:02
8 weeks old, long haired GSD, cute!
gutes Video....
it seems that the quality is deteriorating! what will hapen to their rear legs 30 years from now?
German Shepherd is the best dog 4ever!

The old type gsd with the straight back looked healthier
Take a look at 60's Volker Von Zollgrenzschutz Haus 1.07s.That is the Perfect GSD for me.
@Swifteagle True, I've seen some nice looking specimens with straighter, longer legs and very athletic builds at dog parks. Invariably when I ask their owners they tell me they came from European working stock.

Oh look.. they use to have hind legs.
Breeders slowly deforming their stock. All in the name of vanity.
Editing my previous comment, the less straight backs I'm referring to are the more recent show line German Shepherds
what song is that is it queen?
My 2 GSD have straight back
The back leg isn't short!! It's just there normal position that their known for!!!
yeah, me too! i like the old type gsd more to like the cousin belgian shepherds.....
The only TRUE GSD comes from GERMANY... Great photos, Good video, thank you
....and... 2050..."the cripple von this is a pedigree german shepherd"... with no back legs! .... a champion at it's best...

the lower back and legs hs dropped a huge amount since the early 1900.. no wonder why they have so many problems as they get older.
Ah, the frog dog.

yes you all rigth on older times german dheppard can make a hugue jump over fences now thats is a tragedy
@Dalper19 there still the best

they fucked up bigtime with the german shepherds....
Agree with YINGYANGCHING. Why do you breed this terrible sloping back/over angulation. Even though there probably hip scored they look deformed. I love the breed soooooo much and find it heart breaking.
Kimon Von dan alhedys hoeve (2:32) lives a door away from me. Its was very nice dog you can do everting with him. Bye bye Nijverdal.
@JackKangaroo1 Get a working line German Shepherd!
de 70 pra ca decadencia do pastor alemão....
@67DieHardPatriot454 yeah mine is 90% black and he is 22kg at 5 months and my bitch is 10 weeks old and is 6.8kg thay are the best

I got a better looking GSD from the county shelter ... ha ha. No, seriously, those dogs look unnatural and awkward. What a shame :(
