We did a conversion of a '66 Mini with a 100hp Zero Motorcycle drivetrain and BMW diff. After studying the weight distribution of the original Mini, we opted to put battery and drive up front with only the charger in back. Handles really well, like the old 100 hp racing versions. So for this kit, I hope the battery in back doesn't mess up the fun factor of the original Mini handling!

An advantage, however, is that it can be approved for use on a series of cars. So if you approve a mini with your kit, you can build a number of them without additional approval. I have previously worked with emc and safety so I know quite a lot about the approval process.

This needs inventing for not just the classic Mini, but for the BMW Mini. There are so many of those barely clinging on because of engine issues (head gasket) but the car is still in inherently good, and importantly safe, condition. They could last 10-15 more years. Kits like this one are just too niche, and the same out£of-reach trap as the other classic electrification kits….the initial car costs a fortune to buy a very good one worth investing in.

    • @waveman1500
      @waveman1500 Год назад +5

The cost is too high at the moment. This type of kit costs nearly twice as much as a Fiat 500e. £42,500 to convert your own Mini or £60k to buy one restored and converted.

Perhaps future batteries would offer greater range? Assuming they don't think people would need much range. There is or was a company that made parts for classic Mini cars. Perhaps one could use in addition to the Mini parts from that company to make a 'new' Mini?

It's good to see that at least on Zonic motor actually exists, but it doesn't matter if no one can buy them. You didn't even respond to my request for pricing information - not even the courtesy of a "go away you unimportant maggot, we won't sell to you" note.

@@FelltenSystems True - the Zonic operation is so uninterested in providing information that it provides no way to query them. Knowing that Zonic was a ZeroEV offshoot I contacted ZeroEV (which was still that name at the time, a few months ago)... and received no response at all.
Given the name of a distributor, I can now see that LegacyEV does list the Zonic motors on the product web pages, with prices. That's helpful; Zonic's website should provide links to distributors if they're not going to respond to queries.
      Thanks for the response.

Fair bit is labour cost I imagine.
Plus once fitted there will be warranty obligations.
A DIY version might be an idea putting the onus on the customer to fit it properly and be responsible for damages due to poor fitting etc with limited warranty could bring the price down for those of us who are confident enough to tackle it.

    £42,500.
It's hardly an incentive to convert to electric
Even assuming the 'kit' costs half that price.
    £21,250 still doesn't work.
Nearer £5k and I'd consider converting a car.

I'm not surprised, all the development, equipment etc, you couldn't do it for 10k let alone 5k, I doubt they're making too much money on that either, only reason new cars cost what they cost is scale, these guys are only probably producing 10's of units a year rather than the 10's of thousands a year car companies make. It sucks but shit costs money.

Part of the reason they own them is to tinker with the engine. To do this conversion you need a sorted body shell or a brand new one, ie a non original car. If you have that money you can maybe afford to convert.
