    Speaking about the girl who died... I remember that well too. The thing you left out of your explanation (even though you illustrated it) was the Carousel of Progress turned clockwise making it safe to operate since the operator was stationed on the left side wall and could see an oncoming wall coming toward them as the carousel rotated. For some unknown reason Disney (WDI) decided to make the carousel rotate CCW for America Sings setting up the potential death trap. You see when you rotate the carousel CCW and the control panel which was still on the left wall made the oncoming wall be at your back side. If you the ride operator were peeking over into the next compartment to see your fellow employee, which is what Debbi did, the wall would creep up behind you undetected and cut you in half before you could move out of the way. Why did Disney sacrifice safety for rotating the carousel the other way is unknown? I'm sure they could of solved any issue it may of had running American Sings clockwise. They should of either made it rotate clockwise like the original Carousel of Progress or move the control panel to the right wall for America Sings to make it safe. Whoever designed that, safety was not paramount in their mind.

    • @AreYouInterestedOfficial
      @AreYouInterestedOfficial  7 лет назад +48

      Thanks for further explaining the rotation change, I can see how I definitely could have included that alongside the animation to make it clearer. Even though I was aware of the rotation change, I never thought about how it impacted the safety of the ride for the operators. It does seem like they could have just built the ride in the same rotational order that the COP was presented in; I wonder why they decided to change it.

    • @worldsgreatestride
      @worldsgreatestride 7 лет назад +14

      She had no choice because that's the way Disney designed it. However she did not need to peek into the next compartment, that was her mistake. To avoid it all Disney should of moved the controls to the opposite side of the wall before opening the attraction. Easy fix, yet they elected not to make it.

    To add some more additional information about the night that Debbie passed away. I worked approximately 100 feet away from her on the car ride. As I mentioned before, it got very dark. There was twinkling lights inside the theater and it was very dark and I was told by a friends of mine who also worked on that attraction that Debbie got on stage and cross to a theaters to visit her girlfriend and she was walking between the two theaters when it happened. She was crushed to death. Once that happened, the theater was closed and the redesigned this stage, and also where the cast member would sit if anybody got out of their seat. This theater would stop . Also they have breakaway walls next to the wall to the theaters just in case there was a malfunction I personally believe that training had nothing to do with. She was not supposed to get on stage during the operation of the attraction.

    Debbie Stone was only 18 years old when that incident occurred. A lot people must have heard the very loud screams of her as she got crush to death by the wall. I heard on a video that she was crushed against the stationary part of the stags. It is very sad to hear that her injuries caused her to die in a few minutes. People tried to get to Debbie Stone during the incident but it was too late.

    I always wondered how the girl died. But this explanation makes the most sense:
    "Unfortunately, he [Marc Davis] had the stage lowered slightly, and they did some other changes and when it first opened, there was a young girl working on it-- she was an honor student at college-- but she was always fooling around, and she didn't stay on the chair like she was supposed to. And she would lean out, and lean between [the two walls] when it would come to close, and she would see how long she could stay there before she'd pull back in. Unfortunately she didn't pull back in in time, and her head was mashed. And she was killed and Marc was devastated by it. Her parents were suing, and the people who were in the other side of the wall saw her doing this, and so the parents lost the lawsuit, because she wasn't on the seat where she was supposed to be. But Marc always felt that was his fault by lowering the stage."

    Carousel of Progress was a great ride at Disneyland. I remember it well and the last scene, the Christmas scene was my favorite. There was a color TV console in that scene with a built-in color video tape recorder (VTR) which was state of the art for 1972. Remember Beta Max did not come out till 1976 and VHS not till 1978. This color recorder was called Cartrivision for cartridge-television. As a kid I'd marveled at this video recorder in this attraction as they were available in stores like Sears in 1972 as a console TV/VTR, but the price might as well been on the moon because the retail price for one of these consoles with built-in video recorder was $1,800. That was big bucks for 1972. Disneyland had it so I would love to ride the ride just to see the video recorder play that short western skit in color.

    I've been on that ride back in the spring of 1996 at Disney World in Orlando, Florida . It was neat. You sit in a theater and the theater rotated. At the time I didn't know if it was the theater rotating or the stage rotating. There was different stage sections that had the same characters of animatronic family members that would talk about the different progresses of technology and life in different time periods. At the end of one of the segments of the animatronic talk about life and technology of a certain time period the whole animatronic family would start singing the ketchy toon and the theater you are sitting in would rotate to the right and go on to the next section of the stage. I do remember the lights on the stage would dimly blink gently a couple of times the moment animatronic family would start singing the toon and then the stage would start to rotate. I had no I idea the dimly blinking blink lights was a warning for employees to get out of the way of the rotating stage. I had no idea blinking stage lights was linked to this young woman's tragic death in 1974.

      I was going to mention the changed song too, but reading through the comments I found it here. I visited the Carousel of Progress in Florida in the 70s, 80s and 90s and vividly recall the change in music. The later song has a chorus “now is the time, now is the best time” but for the life of me I could never recall how the first song I heard went. I assume it is the one musicians are rehearsing around a piano in this video.

    In July of 2001. I was able to ride in Magic Kingdom's carousel of progress. I fell in love. I was 8. Turning 9 in two weeks. I have no other memories of Disney, except for this ride. I love this ride, to this day. Mcparks is trying to build this in minecraft..

    I didn’t know that carousel progress is at Disney World. I loved that as a kid. I also didn’t know Deborah was the first employee accidentally killed at Disneyland.
    I’m her age and in early 1975 I had moved to SoCal.
    I took a grocery training class from her father. He told us about his daughter and what happened to her.
    It was horrible and we were stunned.

    My grandmother was around at that time she was at least 12/13 yrs old. When she went on america sings with my great great gradmother aka her mother , so when my grandma herd the scream from debbie she was mortified by the bloodcirtlying scream. But she herd something else along with debbie's scream she herd like something had been craked open or mashed, then she found out that her head was crushed. :( Rest in peace Debbie

      That's just a made up lie ! The truth is no one will every ever know what really happened that night ! But there are a lot of rumors and lies going around especially about her messing around ! From what I read about Debbie is she was a very sweet nice respectful young lady who was very compassionate. So all of that stuff about her I believe are just lies being put out there by mean spirited jealous people

    There is a video of her moments before her death. The stage moves and she steps back, you hear her scream.
    How could anyone mistake that scream as part of the show? That was a primal scream of terror and death. It's so fucked.

    I wonder if Disneyland and Disney world are haunted by people who died there. I've read rumors and people claimed to have seen apparitions and shadow figures in and around the rides.
