I never imagined anyone enjoying an MRE so much. They must have improved them quite a bit. So sweet of Chaudhary to worry about the soldiers not getting enough to eat though!
They're not horrible, but I imagine they're a lot better than they used to be...ppl actually buy these in bulk in the US for a lot of money
MREs are actually fairly decent. The huge plus is that they are durable and can be prepared anywhere. As an aside, if you are in a cold environment, it takes two of the heater packs to really get the food hot. Also, it is critical to always drink a boatload of water. The rumor is that MREs "bind you up" re: constipation. It's not the MRE that does it. It's that you're out and about, sweating your rear off. You have to drink a huge amount of water regardless. Ciao. -Pun intended.
@@ButcherBird-FW190D mre does have a large amount of salt to make up for what you lose. besides constipation would be a boon out in the field.
@@toomanyaccounts after Hurricane Harvey, the National Guard was pasing out MRE's. I grabbed 2 cases for me and my crew. Got them back to the work zone and read the box. Low Sodium MRE!!!! I was shocked. I went to the HEB mobile kitchen and begged a ziploc baggy full of salt. My crew wouldn't have survived on low sodium meals.
@@toomanyaccounts True re: a high amount of sodium (let's just say salt, I agree). That is almost a necessity re: taste and more especially to extend shelf life. Salt makes you retain water, which is NOT what you want to do in a hot environment. You want to sweat. That's how you cool off. The "Phase Change" of water extracts 20 calories of heat per gram of water as it phase changes. That's "real" calories, not the "kilo" calories we commonly refer to. My point being is you want to sweat in order to cool down. Past this, I don't know how many years of service you have; but I assure you that being constipated is most definitely not the goal out in the field. -And if you were really under fire, you'd happy c*** in you pants. 99.999% of the time you are not under fire or in need of cover (snipers notwithstanding on this comment). Anyway.... Just exactly where did you take desert and arctic survival training ? Lackland for me for desert; and Fairchild for arctic.

Mre's don't always taste the best but they're extremely high in calories and will definitely keep you alive when you have nothing else.

They're not as good as fresh meals but I've tasted quite a few and generally liked them all. I keep some on hand for emergencies.
@@iapplethis when on long foot patrol you pack enough too have 2 of these per day and you are supposed to steadily eat them throughout the day not all at once. Often there is not enough time for the heating element so you just eat it cold. The fried rice is much hated because there is often never enough time to cook it thoroughly and you end up with a mix of wet and crunchy.

When my son was in the Army he brought some home for my Grandchildren to try. They loved them. Lol. I think it may have been the novelty of them mostly.
MRE aren't bad, they are designed to be fine. They aren't supposed to taste good because then you will want them and eat too much. And they aren't meant to be inedible because you wont eat them at all. They are purpose designed to be just good enough that people will eat them.

I was just as impressed as our friends were. I'm an American civilian, and I had no idea that American MRE's were self-heating and so close to being what I call "real food."
Also, Mr. Chaudhary has a big heart. I appreciated his lecture on taking better care of soldiers' diet.
A bit late response, but it's as much for weather proofing ( rain and fire don't mix), as it's a light/noise thing. Fires tend to be notice, while this selfheating bag don't make much noise as you don't need to chop wood, and no light. Meaning you can eat it in near no light, while on trail. Not all armies have those just yet though. When i served in the Danish, we were still using ethanol blocks. Not too much light (dull dark blue flame) and last for a while.
Yes they use chemical reactions to heat. You didn't know that? been that way since the late 90's as far as I can remember.

I remember seeing an Italian Ration review once, and it was literally just stuff from an Italian supermarket--literally local name-brand packaged biscuits and a can of soup that you heat on an esbit stove with a little fuel cube. (with a spork and a napkin, etc.)
I mean, if it works it works, but at the same time MRE formulas and their heating systems are probably one of the better things to come out of America's over-indulgence in war budgets.
When I was in the army I would always try to get the chicken and rice. The hot chocolate and grape Kool aid were the best.

@@catshez I grew up during and after the war and how we deal with food and life in general, might seem strange for others just a small example, if I'm collecting food or worthy items in a game, I'll use them as less as possible for fear that yo might not have them available when I need them, had periods in life when I only could have afford soup so I'm grateful to God for every little thing

The pouches which need heating are placed INSIDE the heating bag during the chemical reaction, not ON TOP of the outside.

These guys are great. The main draw here is the humor from their reactions, but I think my favorite parts are the little nuggets of life lessons about living a humble life and having appreciation.

If you do this again the entree package goes INSIDE the heater
you meant to put the entree bag in the heater bag not on top of it so it comes out steaming. just don't drink the water from the heater bag.
My favorite part of this video is that the guys really got the point that these can be eaten in the "jungle" (desert, forest...) I have a box of 30yo MREs in my closet and I bet they are not quite as good as these. :) Got them as a novelty when I was young. Kept them as emergency rations since. They are likely still edible after all this time.
Got to be careful with those. They're usually only good for that long if they're frozen. Be sure to check the smell before you eat them. The main entree/dessert is freeze-dried and is usually pretty good even after a few decades (especially if they're the ones in the dark brown radiation bags from the 80's) but the bread/crackers tend to go bad. if you do crack one open, you should film it an put it up here! There's a whole community of people who love MREs and seeing how people react to them!

I used to couldn’t eat more than one MRE a day. I’d get so full on part of one, I usually was good for the whole day. There’s a ton of salt in them too to help w dehydration. My fingers would swell so bad. I would get in trouble for not eating more but it was just too much. We usually had dried scrambled eggs and pancakes for breakfast…again I couldn’t eat much. You also learned to trade things that you didn’t like for things you did. Ones w candy were pretty valuable. Like someone said before though, they didn’t always taste the best but did the job when there was nothing else.
The packet to be heated needs to be put inside the FRH (flameless ration heater), not on top of it.
It's always a joy to see them try new things they could not imagined existed. Seems all 3 were satisfied with the MRE's.

Sometimes they are just one meal, but often she's trying 24-hour packs (and therefore contains a lot more stuff). It's actually pretty interesting seeing the similarities and differences between countries.

I love that they are so appreciative of what they were given. Most people would scoff at it and just complain about everything. Yet these men appreciated every aspect of it.
Many countries have MRE's, some of those are very different then the fare given to U.S.A. service personnel. I suspect a rabbit hole is opening for reaction and comparison of MRE's from around the world. I'd watch that!
the big problem is they need to be halal. while the facility that makes these is halal certified that doesn't mean the food is. whoever sent these didn't do their homework.

I was serving in the U.S. Army when the first generation of MREs came out. They were pretty bad. There was no way to heat it except from the exhaust from our M1A1 Tank. If you forgot it it would explode the food packet. Today's MREs are much better and have the water/chemical reaction heating system. I'm not surprised to hear Chaudhary care about how we soldiers eat. He's a great man. I wish I could meet them and their families one day and throw a big feast for them. ✌
It makes you feel happy for what you have after seeing them enjoy an MRE as many of us in the military grow to despise them !

As a American citizen watching these videos have brought me to be more thankful for what I have. Also while watching these videos it proves we all as a people cad share food culture equally and learn from one another peacefully.

An important part of MREs is not just that they're ready to eat but that they can be stored for a very long time. I'm just glad that these look a more edible then what we had back in the 1980s.

@@leojones7266 so, my ex was Hilltop 422. They burned their own chit and got shower breaks every 45 days. That was when they convoyed down to Tuzla Main. There was a small contingent of AAFES facilities there. They even had a Burger King Express!!! Mind you, I would never eat that, lol. Anyway, some schmuck complained to a Stars & Stripes reporter that life was difficult because they ran out of BBQ sauce at the BK Express!!! Well, hilarity ensued when a closet comedian decided to complain that life was hard because our MRE's were so old they didn't have blue M&Ms. BWAHAHAHAHAH! Blue M&Ms were very freaking new. We all got the joke. Upper echelons were not amused.. letters were written to commanders, threats of UCMJ were made. M&M Mars found out about it and sent the soldier a 5 lb bag of blue M&M's! Imagine, opening a package from M&M Mars, removing the dry ice and seeing 5 lbs of blue glory!!!!

Yes lol you are right Barf in North American English means "vomit" but Barf in Urdu/Punjabi means "snow"

I know, they really missed out on eating it nice and hot, and therefore we, in part, miss out on their experience also. Such a shame.
I thought Mr. Chaudhry did until I realized he put the heater on top of the food pouch. With people around them that can at least speak English you think they would help them with instructions.

I love to watch all of the videos about tribal people sampling various foods from the West. They are all such delightful, gracious and intelligent people. I also enjoyed watching the videos that were about experiences too. Great presentations. Keep them coming, please!
I was in the Army from '73-82. We ate WW2 C-rations. OD Green canned ? in an OD Green box. The eggs were green, so I knew where Dr Suisse got his "green eggs and ham" story. We had no way to heat them and were given a P38 small metal can opener that we wore with our dog tags. One time I fell asleep with it on my dog tags chain, rolled over on it, and it was open enough to stab me in the chest. 😂
These MRE'S are an old soldier's dream.

There's a vegetarian lasagna. Basically, deconstructed chicken noodle soup.
They seem to have improved the quality of MRE's since i was in. Spent a lot of 60 and 90 outings in the field and grew to love MRE's
Every time, I’m amazed by the things that come to these gentlemen’s minds first. “Amazing! This is like this other thing, very interesting! But the soldiers deserve more food!” No negativity, only compassion.
i definitely understand the confusion with the heater :P quick tip, only fill the water to the line and put the main course pack INside the heater not the outside, then lean against a rock or wall

I grew up in Germany in the early 80s next to a military base. We were very poor. There was military training several times a week and they often left their MREs behind. After the training, we picked up the leftover food and ammo. ;)

I remember reading that in WWII, the in-the-field army food was not adequate enough, and soliders lost a great deal of weight. It had to be improved on. i am amazed by the heating packet--it must be chemicals.

When I was in the Navy i ate these during combat training before a deployment. I really enjoy them especially you was lucky to have the good snacks (skittles, fig newtons). Soo many varieties available.

I loved MRE's in the 80s and 90s and I was in the British Army, renowned for bad food lol. I loved the baby's head and cheese possessed, and the oatmeal with chocolate powder added - with biscuits fruit and biscuits brown! Best days of my life lol

Man, this takes me back to 97 when I was in Korea eating MRE's in the Hummer at night. I hope grandpa didn't use the heater water to make the lemonade.
In all my time eating these in the army, I never once thought to warm the bread on top of the heater bag while it was warming the entree. It would’ve been so much better! So smart!
It is fairly high calorie to give the soldiers enough energy to march and fight. The heater is so they don't have to start a fire to cook food which could give their position away. Also, many soldiers don't want the heating pack to reduce the weight they carry. You can eat these items cold as they are fully cooked. Heating them just helps warm your belly up on a cold day.

These meals are definitely convenient. I first tried them at a shelter during Hurricane Rita. I was also given a case full during Hurricane Harvey. They lasted me over a year.

They should be in training films about field survival. I'd be convinced to love em cause it could be worst. These guys are awesome.👍

It seems they don't know how dense that food is. It is packed full of calories.
I'm sure it's mentioned elsewhere in the comments too, but one of those meals is supposed to provide somewhere around 2000 calories e.g. one meal should be enough to keep you going for an entire day at a modicum of physical exertion. And yes, when I was in back in the early '90s they were (mostly) mediocre at best, and have come a long way since then, but I still miss some of the included items. The freeze-dried fruit was always a treat, and several of the entrees were quite decent for something that had been in a vacuum pack for months on end. And yes, you had better drink a LOT of water along with them, or you're going to be stopped up. Typically, we'd drink at least a quart and a half of water with one of these meals in addition to the several quarts they made sure we drank during the day.

I have a hunch this might take off. Tribal people try MRE's from around the world. There are tons of different kinds.
Chaudhary needs a T-Shirt that just says "Feed Me" on it.
The food doesn't look nearly as bad as I imagined. No idea what it tastes like but I imagine when they're in the middle of the desert or jungle or wherever in the midst of battle, they probably aren't too picky. It keeps them full, healthy, and alive. And hopefully gives them a little bit of pleasure too.
there are mre review channels where not only the contents but the meal is prepared and the person does a taste test.
I am happy they were spared the Chicken Ala King from the late 80s-early 90s. We didn't have flameless ration heaters back then. I vice-gripped my main packets to the exhaust on my M901 and in a few minutes, piping hot!

it's amazing how they keep praising God for new inventions, new kinds of preparing and packing the food, and be so grateful for what they get
