I substitute melted butter for oil and use buttermilk instead of milk. They come out light and fluffy on the inside with just the tiniest bit of crispiness around the edges. Stacked two to three high (depending on the circumference) with a generous pat of room temperature real creamery butter in between each pancake. Then lots of pure maple syrup that's been warmed up a bit. It's heaven on a plate! And a couple eggs. Doesn't matter if they're boiled, fried, or scrambled; 2 eggs, some bacon or sausage, and 2 or 3 pancakes in a stack is a common uneventful American breakfast. Beverage can be coffee, tea, or milk.
Pancakes with eggs and bacon or sausage is the typical American breakfast. When they say Full English or Full Irish, they mean the different things they eat with the eggs and toast, but there is no way they could eat a whole Full American. That's really two meals for most people: pancakes and breakfast links; eggs with bacon. I prefer a biscuit with my eggs rather than potatoes, though. Fried potatoes with or without sausage is a third option, imo. Just fill my plate with potatoes, fried with a crispy bottom and enough salt to make it worthwhile. Nothing else is needed.

My mom used Bisquick a lot in the 1970s & 1980s when I was a kid - pancakes, waffles, biscuits, strawberry short cakes, etc. I kinda got Bisquick'd out. My son prefers Pearl Milling Company (Aunt Jemima). I prefer using an electric griddle over stovetop since there's more temperature control. My mom's 1960s surface unit has temperature control on one burner, so if you didn't want to take out the electric griddle you could still control it on a griddle pan. I'm old fashioned when it comes to syrup. I'll take original any day -- especially if it's from Vermont. But I am a sucker for dipping bacon or sausage into it at breakfast. It just goes together so well. Maple bacon is also delicious. Although if I did had to pick a flavored syrup I think I'd go with good old fashioned blueberry. Very satisfying.
Bourbon aged means the syrup has been aged in barrels that were used to age bourbon While it does absorb some of the trace amounts of the alcohol that was once in the barrels there is almost no alcohol in bourbon aged syrup ( it’s less than one percent)
Definitely put butter on the pancakes before the maple syrup. Also, sausages or bacon goes very well with them. Finally, either scrambled eggs or eggs over easy to make that a nice weekend morning breakfast.

Oh, and I see some commenters have missed one little point, when putting the butter on the pancakes, make sure the pancakes are still hot, that way the butter melts on the pancake.
Absolutely, butter first on the hot pancakes and then the syrup or jam. Enjoy, need any other American goodies, be in touch. My paternal grandfather came from Bristol, grandmother, London (1888) and visited a cousin on Gurnsey !!! I love getting a glimpse of Archie, what a good boy !! God bless you all. Also thank you for having such an open mind about "things" American !! Be well. 🇺🇸❤
Thanks for sharing your experience with us all. Fluffy Pancakes with lots of real butter and real maple syrup lathered all over. Mmmm. That’s how I like em and stacked high.
Nice video. Be aware, that the most traditional and the BEST way to eat pancakes, waffles and French toast in the US is with a bit of butter and real maple syrup; they are wonderful with coffee (or tea) which "cuts" the sweetness; however, in reality, the majority (the vast majority) of Americans have never had real maple syrup; our supermarkets will have half an aisle of numerous brands of "Pancake and Waffle syrup", which is made with high fructose corn syrup and colorings; the most common brand is Log Cabin, but they are all basically the same; this section of the store will also have 3 or 4 brands of real maple syrup comprising of less than one tenth of the syrup section; it is relatively expensive compared to the "Pancake and Waffle syrup"; if you are on a budget and have a large family. it would be quite a splurge to always buy real maple syrup, and the alternative is "okay"; However, if it is within your budget, real maple syrup is WONDERFUL! Most of it comes from Canada, Vermont and even NY state
No idea if you all warmed up the syrup first... but if you get the syrup good and warm/hot (use a small pan of water then once it's good and hot, sit the syrup bottle in the pan with the lid open (while on the stove at medium heat)... then put some butter on the pancakes, add the hot syrup to melt the butter, been eating them that way fo 50yrs lol 😋
I know I'm not the first to comments about this and I'm sure I won't be the last. When James said, "So much put on." I shook my head. That wasn't even enough for one bite. Come on y'all. Drench that sucker.
So fun watching you taste test American pancakes with various maple syrups. When you go to IHOP, they'll also have a selection of fruit flavored syrups you can pour over your pancakes. Enjoy!!😊
IHOP syrup probably is not "real" its probably all high fructose corn syrup. Skipjack is from Vermont so it's the real stuff. Never a bottle of fake stuff in my house lol
I have ate pancakes with maple syrup, pancakes with corn syrup, an pancakes with molasses. But what was always on them was butter. Butter is a requirement.
You've probably also discovered that once you bring out syrup it tends to find its way all over your kitchen. Pancakes are a very flexible bread and can be used with almost any topping, sweet or savory.
Great video you two, as far as I’m concerned syrup should only be syrup, nothing added. And yes butter first then syrup, eggs and bacon or breakfast sausages are a must. Beautiful little one.
Stack them: Pancake, butter, pancake, butter, pancake, butter…Canadian maple syrup poured all over and dripping down the sides. With your favourite salty cured meat product on the side. ON A PLATE! Eat with fork and knife!
I like my pancakes with butter and cinnamon sugar rather than syrup. I think the syrup is so sweet it takes away from the pancakes. You should also try pitting chocolate chips on the pancakes as soon as you take out of the pan. They get nice and melty. Better than putting directly in batter.
Mmmm…… pancakes 🤤. I’m a minimalist with my pancakes. Regular buttermilk pancakes with butter and natural maple syrup is all I need. Krusteaz brand is my favorite.
Just an FYI.. We {Americans} don't always eat syrup with our pancakes. Sometimes we just put some butter on them and eat them like that. Sometimes we like to put fruit on our pancakes, like strawberries, blueberries or bananas. When you go to IHOP they will give you strawberry syrup and blueberry syrup. Yeah the syrup is a little sweet but the food industry here in the US over sweetens everything, so we are use to everything being too sweet. Other things to try on your pancakes I always put butter or margarine on my pancakes along with anything else. butter just makes them taste better even when adding other toppings Cinnamon and butter Just plain honey Whipped Cream Chocolate Sauce or Nutella Any kind of fruit spread, jelly, jam, preserves {when I say Jelly I mean the American definition, not Jello} Caramel topping sauce A popular twist on pancakes is to cook them with either Chocolate Chips, Peanut Butter Chips or Butter Scotch Chips. You add the chips just before the batter gets solid and you flip them quickly. Warning.. all of these will make the pancakes sweeter I've never put anything spicey in my pancakes.. I don't think it would make them good
@@FrankTomaka-ie8fh I disagree sorry. a lot of people put fruit on their pancake and when they do that they do not use syrup. I fail to understand why people on social media always have to try and contradict statement when they don't know what they are talking about
Definitely needed the butter! I doubt many Americans eat pancakes without butter. Just a slice of warm butter after taking them out of the pan makes such a big difference. But your pancakes look well mixed and cooked. You can also try adding berries to the mix such as blueberries or raspberries or some people enjoy bananas. The first syrup (pure maple syrup) is generally regarded as the best, if you really want good syrup make sure its from Vermont, New York, (really anywhere north east) or even Canadian syrup. And Ihop is not the best pancakes you can get Waffle House has better pancakes than Ihop, but a local non chain restaurant is likely to offer you some of the best American breakfast food you can eat and be prepared to have your plate over flowing. Great video guys!
To throw in my two cents, I grew up with short stacks of three pancakes. While hot, you put a pat of butter on each pancake, and then you spread it around. The salt of the butter is a good counterpoint to the sweetness of the maple syrup - sort of like salted caramel. After they are buttered you pour a generous amount of syrup on the top pancake, less on the middle, and less on the bottom. The syrup will run down the sides of the stack and be absorbed by the bottom pancake. Then you slice in and enjoy.
I have realized over the years that I use much more syrup than most other Americans (but, although I grew up modestly, I grew up in Buffalo, and perhaps being on the border of Canada and NY State also producing maple syrup, we always had the "real thing", not "Pancake and Waffle syrup", such as Log Cabin or Mrs Buttersworth)
I hope you got real maple syrup. So many people get pancake syrup assuming it's maple and it's colored karo syrup and all you are getting is sugar. To get me to eat pancakes as a kid, my mom would use cookie cutters on them. Another idea beyond fruit toppings is putting peanut butter or cinnamon and sugar on top.
Usually when I eat pancakes, I'll have something a bit savory alongside them, such as sausage. That way, they counter-balance one another with the sweet and savory. Personally, I find the regular maple syrup and the berry syrups to be the best. My favorite berry syrups are: boysenberry, blackberry, blueberry, and strawberry. I also like fresh fruit and powdered sugar as a topping, too. Butter is a must with pancakes.
I would say that "breakfast sausage" which is different than other sausages, is absolutely the most common meat to serve with pancakes; however, bacon is good also
Pancakes stacked 3 high with peanut butter spread between them and maple syrup on top. Served with real southern link breakfast sausage. I even have this for supper sometime.
You have to butter your pancakes before putting on the syrup and they're eaten on a plate. If you're going to do American food, do it the American way.
We always just make pancakes from scratch--flour, a little sugar, baking powder, baking soda, egg, and oil, blended into a batter. It's really not hard to do. With real maple syrup, a little goes a long way.
Yeah, I was going to say that pancakes from a mix (which, to be fair, most restaurant pancakes are) are fine, but from scratch it's a whole 'nother thang! And so easy. There's nothing complicated about mixing up pancakes. And our favorite way to have pancakes is with fried eggs and sausage. YUM! Both of those things like to slide into the syrup just a bit, and a bite with all three in one...that's what breakfast is all about. If you make your batter a bit thinner, you can make crepes. The best crepes I've ever had were at the cafe' at Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. They gave us a complimentary order as we were a largish group, and we shared them. They were folded over into quarters and stacked, three or four high (but paper-thin so not a "big" stack, and piled with peaches in a caramel sauce with whipped cream. OHMYGOODNESS!! One bite and I was ready to take on all comers for the rest. ;-)
I know many comments say to dip sausage, bacon, and any number of things into the maple syrup... Just so you're aware, not all of us Americans like that! Nobody in my family likes to drown everything with syrup. If it touches on the plate that's okay, but I prefer the savory things to stay savory. Try it to see, but it's perfectly okay to not like syrup on eggs or whatever.
I always put butter on my hot pancakes so that the butter melts into the pancake. And I use very little syrup as I am diabetic. I love pancakes. At IHOP, they even have blueberry syrup but I usually go with plain maple syrup.
If your ever in the states IHOP is probably the most common, but the best place I've ever been for pancakes is The Original Pancake House (their chain was quite literally the first pancake house in america, but unlike the others they focused on quality in the few places they were; rather than expanding everywhere like IHOP.) They have some really good specialties like their crepe's, dutch pancakes, & german snitzel's, etc.
A plain buttermilk pancake mix is even better with apple bits or blueberries right in the batter, Some prefer fruit syrups....others sweetened fruit with whipped cream. If you do not have a syrup, a fruit jam either cold or warmed up wiill do the trick. They are usually served in place of bread at a meal. More of a cold weather food sometimes served with sausage or bacon and eggs. IHOP was famous for its Belgium waffles in our after hours date night romps.
When you cook pancakes, the perfect time to flip is when bubbles rise to the surface of the uncooked side, pop and leave a little hole. Should be a perfect golden brown and set enough to stay intact when you flip them. Maple syrup and a pat of butter for every pancake is traditional. I think North Americans take the availability of Maple Syrup for granted but it's glorious. 🙌♥️
I make pancakes once a week for my children. Buttermilk pancakes from scratch taste the best! It’s also very common to have Canadian maple syrup in the US. And next time cook up some eggs and your choice of meat, pancakes is too sugary to eat alone. Loved the video!
A good pure maple syrup (with some butter) is the best pancake topping, and while you can find US produced product, the Canadians seem to have the best PURE maple syrup.
in America we got hotcake griddlecakes pancakes and flapjacks, for words for fried batter, and still only one word for LOVE and like they said must apply a nice scoop of butter spread on each cake before adding syrup . I remember as a poor kid sometime if no syrup was available we would use jelly or make our own syrup which was just boiling a pile of sugar in water
I make homemade Buttermilk pancakes via the original Betty Crocker cookbook recipe. I have made a (reg) yogurt version too. But as others have said, eat them warm with butter before any syrup goes on. I like them with just butter. If a mix or a restaurant I do use syrup. Blueberry pancakes or syrup are good. Milk doesn't give the same taste as buttermilk, yogurt etc. More bland, imo. I just had pancakes at IHOP for Veterans day. (free red white & blue pancakes) strawberry on one side, blueberry compote on the other side & whipped cream down the middle. I preferred the blueberry half & could do without all the sweet stuff. It was nice though and good. It's just that, basically, just give me a short stack of buttermilk pancakes with a few over easy eggs & some crispy bacon. I am in heaven!
Real cream salted butter on hot pancakes. When I'm cooking them, as soon as I flip the pancake I add a little pat of butter so it can start melting while the pancake is still cooking. Then add syrup. As others have mentioned, crispy bacon is great with them, especially dipped in the maple syrup. If you're not a big syrup fan spinkle on a little powdered sugar and/or fruit instead.
Pancakes reheat and freeze well. I like to double the batch, stack them with waxed paper or parchment separating them, bag them and just put them in the refrigerator to have the rest the next day.
To add to what was said below-melted butter on the pancakes first, then syrup will be more authentic & so good!! Blueberry syrup or Strawberry jam is also good!
I have buttermilk corn meal pancake mix. I add a 1/4 cup of warm milk and coconut yogurt. Add organic frozen blueberries. I only use organic milk and syrup. The Pancake looks so delicious. Archie is so cute.
yes usually we spread butter on top of pancakes then pour syrup on top to cover the entire pancake and have puddles on side. then eat the pancake and dip it in to puddle of syrup on side. The majority of people use maple syrup. So use flavored syrup like strawberry syrup of blueberry syrup. Once in awhile you will see someone use srawberry sauce on top like you use for strawberry shortcake.
Incase no one else mentioned it “bourbon aged” means the syrup was stored in a used whiskey (bourbon) barrel so that some of the whiskey flavoring is absorbed into the syrup
I have never seen pancakes eaten out of a bowl before. Always, always, always butter prior to syrup.
We ran out of plates to keep the syrups separate. aha! Didn't know about the butter but will tryout next time :D Thank you :D

Most of it comes from Canada, Vermont and even NY state
It is expensive because it takes 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup. But it is worth it.
Try it with some Canadian bacon and golden browned hash brown potatos.
While the pancakes are still warm, put some butter on them, then add syrup.
No idea if you all warmed up the syrup first... but if you get the syrup good and warm/hot (use a small pan of water then once it's good and hot, sit the syrup bottle in the pan with the lid open (while on the stove at medium heat)... then put some butter on the pancakes, add the hot syrup to melt the butter, been eating them that way fo 50yrs lol 😋
butter and maple syrup... can't go wrong.😊MUST eaten HOT.
@nate9696 I belive you are right. I haven't seen an IHOP with real maple syrup.
@@nate9696 It still tastes good whatever it's made of.
@3DJapan fair, I just don't like the sugar/fake stuff. Taste so diff too me
To me, ihop is on the bottom of the list. Local diners are usually better.
I love just plain original maple syrup from our Canadian neighbors up north. However if I do a flavor, I prefer blueberry infused maple syrup.
I eat pancakes with butter & strawberry jam...sometimes I include powder sugar on the strawberry jam...
Always add butter on top of the pancake
Love the fact that you two are honest with your reactions.
The best thing I like about pancakes, is the variety of flavors you can add to them , not just the variety of syrup
Millie needs a glass of milk after that salted caramel syrup. 🥛 Also a knife to cut the pancakes 🥞
Other things to try on your pancakes
I always put butter or margarine on my pancakes along with anything else. butter just makes them taste better even when adding other toppings
Cinnamon and butter
Just plain honey
Whipped Cream
Chocolate Sauce or Nutella
Any kind of fruit spread, jelly, jam, preserves {when I say Jelly I mean the American definition, not Jello}
Caramel topping sauce
A popular twist on pancakes is to cook them with either Chocolate Chips, Peanut Butter Chips or Butter Scotch Chips. You add the chips just before the batter gets solid and you flip them quickly. Warning.. all of these will make the pancakes sweeter
I've never put anything spicey in my pancakes.. I don't think it would make them good
it is a fairly small minority of Americans who don't put syrup on pancakes
@@FrankTomaka-ie8fh I disagree sorry. a lot of people put fruit on their pancake and when they do that they do not use syrup. I fail to understand why people on social media always have to try and contradict statement when they don't know what they are talking about
One last thing my grandma used to have preserves when she didn't have syrups ( like blueberry or strawberry and even apply butter).
We did too growing up. Usually grape jelly (not Jell-O!) but preserves are nice too. And apple butter which usually has less sugar.
Butter your pancakes before syrup!
Now imagine that pancake with an egg, sunny side up, sitting on top.
Try it with peanut butter on it and another one with jelly on it
IN THE STATES WE HAVE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SYRUP FLAVORS.
You need to try blueberry pancakes with maple syrup and butter
Take 2 pancakes with butter on them and put a fried egg and bacon on them and make a breakfast sandwich
Yummmmmm!!!!
Looks great i like bacon ham or sausage along with each bite to cut the sweet
To throw in my two cents, I grew up with short stacks of three pancakes. While hot, you put a pat of butter on each pancake, and then you spread it around. The salt of the butter is a good counterpoint to the sweetness of the maple syrup - sort of like salted caramel. After they are buttered you pour a generous amount of syrup on the top pancake, less on the middle, and less on the bottom. The syrup will run down the sides of the stack and be absorbed by the bottom pancake. Then you slice in and enjoy.
Hard to get too much syrup lol, That first one definitely didn't have enough for my taste.
Did you guys put some butter over it? I like my with a glass of milk or coffee with no sugar. used a knife to cut it with!
I would say that "breakfast sausage" which is different than other sausages, is absolutely the most common meat to serve with pancakes; however, bacon is good also
Buttermilk pancakes with Canadian maple syrup. The best!!
Pancakes stacked 3 high with peanut butter spread between them and maple syrup on top. Served with real southern link breakfast sausage. I even have this for supper sometime.
Been waiting for you rry all the things you see!!
Blueberry compote is the best topping for pancakes in my opinion…. A close second is a banana Foster’s sauce.
One bite and I was ready to take on all comers for the rest. ;-)
Where's the milk?
….and don’t forget, add fruit like berries on top.
@@kikibigbangfan3540 Yes, milk is pretty important to pancake batter. :)
Don't forget a little bit of butter in top
I always put butter on my hot pancakes so that the butter melts into the pancake. And I use very little syrup as I am diabetic. I love pancakes. At IHOP, they even have blueberry syrup but I usually go with plain maple syrup.
Butter always makes them even better. The original maple syrup is the best but there is also a blueberry syrup that s very nice.
Pancakes are best with molasses or honey. Not the store bought stuff. From a local bee keeper.
Sausages are great with pancakes
SapJack is an amazing Vermont maple syrup. They also have a delicious maple butter
Slapjack is made with corn syrup though.
Millie, I agree with you. I only eat pancakes with butter and regular maple syrup. I never heard of the other flavors.
I eat it with Jelly.
Pancakes are my favorite thing to eat once a week on a day off. A little late breakfast with pancakes, syrup, bacon, and coffee. Perfect.
Use plates… add butter to the pancakes first and serve with eggs and sausage
beans on toast, and pancakes in bowls. brits are an interesting bunch
The more syrup the better. Good job 😋 👍
I make pancakes once a week for my children. Buttermilk pancakes from scratch taste the best! It’s also very common to have Canadian maple syrup in the US. And next time cook up some eggs and your choice of meat, pancakes is too sugary to eat alone. Loved the video!
A good pure maple syrup (with some butter) is the best pancake topping, and while you can find US produced product, the Canadians seem to have the best PURE maple syrup.
in America we got hotcake griddlecakes pancakes and flapjacks, for words for fried batter,
and still only one word for LOVE and like they said must apply a nice scoop of butter spread on each cake before adding syrup . I remember as a poor kid sometime if no syrup was available we would use jelly or make our own syrup which was just boiling a pile of sugar in water
My first comment you can’t put too much syrup on a pancake don’t worry
I personally just like butter on my pancakes. 🤗 I'm not big on sweets, so melted butter on piping hot pancakes was always my favorite breakfast! 😋
