It is absolutely worth it to take a river boat around for a tour. It's interesting and informative. I would recommend having drinks on the Riverwalk and having dinner at MI Tierra. Those places on the Riverwalk really are for the tourists. I'm not saying they're not good. But there is much better at Market Square which is still downtown just not on the river. San Antonio might be considered the epicenter of Tex-Mex cuisine, although the farther south you go (i.e., closer to Mexico) the more "authentic" the Mexican food can be. With all its charm, people sometimes forget that San Antonio is also a large city, larger than Dallas. It's also a tourist area, so places like the Riverwalk, although a must-see, can be pricey.
I would point out that Mexico is a very large country and the "authentic Mexican" food you might get close to the border will be "authentic Chihuahuan" or "authentic Sonoran" food not representative of all of Mexico. I live 40 miles north of the border in Arizona and the food around here as well as across the border in Nogales, Sonora is quite different from, say, what you might get along the Mexican Pacific coast or in Yucatan or even Mexico City. That's one thing I like about California is that there are immigrants there from pretty much all over Mexico and Central America and lots of them run restaurants so the "Mexican food" is much more varied than what you find actually close to the border.
Almost all major restaurants have their menu online which gives a brief description of what each food is (what it contains and how it is cooked). For Tex Mex, especially, you might want to look up anything you think looks interesting to judge its spice level. It is nice for people to recommend things, but everyone's taste is different.
It's so nice to hear someone say they want to visit the northern states! Haha I feel like EVERY SINGLE reaction channel only ever talks about to visit the southern states. Texas, Florida, Tennessee...or California. It gets a bit old to see all the southern food reactions over and over. We're fun up here too! Haha 😂❤
Yes the ride on the riverwalk is great. There is nothing like the sound of a sizzling fajita. You don’t have to put the Spanish rice on a fajita. Sour cream helps cool down the heat in your mouth. I sometimes make quesadillas at home for a snack.
When one of my granddaughters was little, she always drank the salsa at the Mexican restaurants. That girl couldn't get enough. The river walk is nice! the Alamo is small. But the food in Texas is awesome.
May I suggest that you order different types of beans so you can taste the three most popular? Refried beans, charro beans and borracho beans. Also, fajitas are supposed to be only filled slightly so you can wrap it. Try the beef, chicken and shrimp.
Margaritas, Daiquiris, and Pina Coladas are available at most tex mex restaurants, also in the "fish bowl" size, Chips and salsa are complimentary with your meal.
Chips at Mexican and Tex Mex places is commonly always complimentary and you can get salsa too. Drinks like Pop and Coffee are free refill after charged to your bill for first order.
I was going to say the same thing. I would add that rum is more of a Caribbean alcohol whereas tequila is Mexican. I mean you can get anything anywhere, but if you're going for the tex-mex vibe, margaritas would be a better choice.
I have been to Rita's many times. It's not really "great" food. It's decent. You go to Rita's mostly for the atmosphere. Having said that, for you first foray into San Antonio Riverwalk, they're a solid choice. Chips and salsa are almost always free at every restaurant. Usually you'll get chips and red tomato based salsa and green tomatillo based salsa. Queso or cheese sauce is usually available at an additional fee. Rita's does have daqueries.
Chips and salsa are almost always complimentary. And Mrs. H needs to utilize that margarita! The acid and salt tamper down the spice level... until the next bite, that is. :D
40 years of experience eating this food and living here, so trust me when I say mix and match the foods. Rice, beans ,sauces ,enchiladas ,fajitas, all can mixed and matched in different combinations or all together on one tortilla! And it's all better that way!❤❤❤
16:10 " Everyone We've Watched Have Tried This, But Yet They're Still Shocked At How Good It Is" Hey James and Millie, whenever you guys do.come to the US and try some of the local cuisine from whichever state you go. You should definitely do a reaction video of your trying out this food
If you order something like nachos off the menu (like from the appetizer section) then you pay for it. I’ve never been to a Mexican restaurant where you paid for chips & salsa, and often they bring several kinds of salsa or pico de gallo for you. Pico is my fave! And if you eat all the chips before your food comes out, you can ask for more and they’ll bring you more. Other restaurants will bring you bread or dinner rolls with whipped butter, so be careful not to fill up on those before you eat!
i live in san antonio and its an awesome city. i moved here 2 years ago from south carolina. there is so many things to do here and in the surrounding areas. pretty soon there will be the Fiesta which is basically a week+ long city-wide party of any place you go to. most places you go downtown will even have little medals or pins that people collect. the river is even dyed green for St. Patricks day
Keep in mind you don't have to go to an expensive restaurant to get some good Tex-Mex. I lived in Houston most of my 44 years of life and a lot of my favorite Tex-Mex come from your roadside food trucks. Soooo good. 😋
Houston is one of my favorite food towns. Back when I was in grad school, it was a great town for good, inexpensive ethnic food. I learned whole new ways of eating, shopping and cooking while living there.
With the ubiquity of hispanic labor in the US, you can find good Tex-Mex in almost every state (as well as Ecuadoran, Guatemalan, and Puerto Rican food.)
Just be aware that the prices are usually quite a bit higher in a tourist area. Some people may think the food is more "commercialized" & less authenticate. That may or may not be correct.
Strawberry daiquiris used to be a lot more popular in the US several decades ago, but surely there are places that still offer them! Sometimes they have flavored margaritas, too.
You'll love the strawberry Margaritas... You'll probably get a couple Strawberry seeds between your teeth! In Las Vegas, they use long Souvenir Flutes, as they sell their Margaritas "By the Foot"! ALOT of Mexican Restaurants put out Complimentary unlimited Tortillas Chips and House Salsas/Cheese Dips/Bean Dips with their meals.
Have to do Chicago Illinois Mr H and the Beesley's at some point. Just not in the winter, so you can hang out with Laurence from Lost in the Pond. Also so you can try a real hot dog, and an Italian Beef, and a real deep dish pizza.
A good Italian beef is a beautiful thing. I interned at Argonne National Labs one summer. I discovered the Italian beef while there. Good but oh so messy. You might get a fight over the "real" hot dog. Fans NYC dirty water hot dogs might argue with the Chicago dog's claim. I was never able to learn to like deep dish pizza tho'. I tried. Just not my thing.
Those enchiladas are chicken or beef wrapped in a tortilla the sauce is green enchilada sauce probably made with tomatillo and jalapeno. Delicious food, texmex, definitely have to try if you make it to texas or the south...
Green enchiladas are from the same chiles as red enchiladas- it’s just if they are still green when picked or left to ripen to red. Pretty sure that was not Hatch green chili or she might have been caught off guard from the heat. Time for them to come to New Mexico for some real chiles!
The best red dipping sauces are a very suttle spicy. Not too much. After your half way through the chips, your mouth is now on fire, but for some reason, you love it. If they overdo the spice ,it's too hot, and you won't eat much of it. Some restaurants do a cold red sauce, and some heat the sauce up to a warm temp. Either way, if done right, it will be delicious!!❤
Enchiladas are soft tortillas that are filled with a meat and rolled like a burrito. Usually get 4 on the plate. They are usually covered in shredded cheese that melts on top. Then you have either green chili sauce poured on top or a spicy red sauce. Green usually isn’t spicy.
I'm a Florida boy and we have lots of Mexican food and have good enchiladas however, if you want the best hot green chili enchiladas, you have to go to New Mexico
Here in north texas the usual is two enchiladas o. A llate, sometimes 3, and the salsa verde is normally spicy. Every once in a while you get a tomatillo sauce which is less spicy. The normal enchiladas here are: chicken, beef, or cheese. Chicken being shredded stewed chicken with sour cream sauce or salsa verde. Beef being ground beef usually with chili sauce. Cheese normally come wiyh onion mixed in and chili sauce on top. All three are served with beans and rice. That is the norm here. Of course there are variations offered.
Fajitas are definitely my favorite when it comes to Tex Mex. A close second is Street Tacos which are very simple,a corn tortilla, fajita beef, fresh onion, cilantro, jalapenos and Mexican White cheese and of course a squeeze of lime.
Remember that Mr. and Mrs. H have been to other states already. In one of their pre-trip videos they explain where they have been and why. I believe he is the one who has family in the states, so those trips included family obligations.
Hi guys! Chips and salsa are free. They are in San Antonio which is more Mex than Tex, a great town. There are places all over town that have great food. Ask a local and they can steer you to some of the mom and pop places. In Fort Worth I found, with the help of my Hispanic friends, some really small places that don't even have a sign, and the food is incredible! Of course, there are also the big chain restaurants like Chipotle, Pancho's, El Fenix and El Chico that have some passable stuff as well as numerous taco places. Another really good bet is to find Mexican food trucks. They often have some really good stuff. Hope Archie is doing well, you and Millie too, of course. Bye for now.
Texas girl, here. San Antonio is one of my all-time favorite cities. The River Walk is beautiful in the spring. New Year’s Eve fireworks are amazing, if you go in winter.
The Riverwalk isn't the best Tex-Mex in San Antonia. It is rather 'touristy'. Ergo the planetary sized Margarita. You will need to do this one now the H's have done it of course. It is a pleasant area but do the rest of your eating elsewhere. The taco & chili is excellent there. I was too far away going to school in Austin but I might be able to remember a few places.
@@nullakjg767 There ya go . . . A native speaks. I remember Shaun doing a video about a small place in SA & he raved about even the beans. Maybe they should do more Shaun videos.
It doesn't have to be too spicy ;-) Last time was at the Riverwalk, in 2001, I ate at the English pub, ate fish and chips with a heavy Guiness ;-) In 2010 in Dallas, I had fish tacos in blue tortilla.
Hello from Tulsa 👋 hello James and Millie. This should be awesome. To answer your question yes Millie they do strawberry daiquiris and they are that big !!!
This place is on The River Walk in San Antonio. If you go to see The Alamo, there are some REALLY GOOD places that are much less expensive in that area. My mother loves that section and says she always went to the same little hole in the wall places because they were less expensive, the food was amazing and they weren't as busy. If a server puts down chips and salsa in front of you without you ordering them, they are free.
Fajitas are by far my favorite! I used to not like refired beans but i now add a little salsa on top and love them too. My personal opinion is that TexMex compared to traditional Mexican, is that TexMex meats are a little bit smoker taste. I like green enchilada sauce but don't care for red enchilada sauce. You must have pico, so fresh and delicious
Oh Millie, just a thought on a trip strategy. Where you want to go can depend on an event or a time of year, as you are already figuring out, so now that you know you want to go to Texas in X month (May, I think), now search the other states as to, ‘what to do and see in Maine in May’. Build you list of possibilities from what you find and then see what wins and loses based on time and money available. Enjoy your trip, whenever you can make it. (Go Archie… Show them who’s the boss!)
I've been to San Antonio twice once when I was a teen in the 80s then I did my basic training at Lackland airforce base in the early 90's. I love it there and love the food.👍
yes chips & salsa are complimentary at restaurants especially if they just automatically bring them out but there's some exceptions....yes you can get a daiquiri but margaritas are completely different....not enchiladas are not the same thing as soft tacos....they're flour tortillas stuffed with usually cheese or meat rolled up & covered in cheese & either red or green sauce which is flavorful but not spicy
In the States, If you ever go to any kind of Mexican restaurant and they don’t offer UNLIMITED chips, salsa, and soft drink refills FREE, Then you’ve selected poorly and need to drop those chumps like a baaaad habit!! Go to any of their dozen other competitors who make better food and do offer complementary service…Fried Tortillas, Salsa, and Sugar Water are dirt cheap, and any restaurant that doesn’t offer them free has sucky food, service, management, or all three! I mean it….flee!!
Salsa and Chips are complimentary in most Tex Mex Restaurants. Every Friday in San Antonio you will see a ton of new UR Air Force Airman, They have a Boot camp graduations at Lackland Base on Fridays.
Try some New England states.. Maine is famous for their lobster rolls, Rhode Island and Massachusetts are well known for fresh seafood and Italian. Rhode Island has a lot of first and second generation Italians. The food is unbelievably delicious,
In the state of New Mexico (where I'm from), we always debate on whether to have red or green chile on our food. So any Mexican restaurant in NM, you can order it Christmas style. In this case, one enchalata will be covered in red while the other will be covered in green chile.
I like beef fajitas but I also like chicken fajitas too. Not sure if he did, put you need to put the salsa on it. If you want to check out the rivers, there are some really nice ones between Austin & San Antonio in New Braunfels, Wimberley, and San Marcos. Some of the clearest water I've seen. I grew up around here & have lived here most of my life & I love it.
All Mexican restaurants give chips and salsa complimentary as you wait for your meal . I am born and raised here in San Antonio Texas and take my wife to Rita's often for drinks on the river walk.
If you listen to anything, listen to this. All BBQ and TexMex restaurants are not equal. If you come to Texas, get recommendations for the restaurants you go to. Just like anywhere, there are good and bad places. Some of the worst BBQ and Texas Mex I have ever had was right here in Dallas. But also, the best I’ve had as well. Get beef fajitas, queso and frozen margarita, you won’t be sorry.
Amen. There is some scary BBQ and TexMex out there. In my experience, the quality of Tex-Mex is inversely proportional to size of the margarita and the trendiness of the decor. Also, if the refritos and chorizo are vegan, run. My little neighborhood in DFW has great Puebla, Veracruz, and nortenos style Mexican places. But most of the Tex-Mex places are hideous. And we have an outbreak of establishments that come up with cute names for weird mixes of foods stuffed into way over priced tacos. They are great for the hipsters, tho'.
River walk is pricey for tourist, there are soo many other great restaurants that are more affordable through the city and surrounding cities. Texas summers are brutal make sure you order 2 waters with that margarita.
Yep The Chips Are Free & The Salsa Dips!! Plus They Are Freshly Made!! Except For The Cheese Dip Which I Love ❤️ & Always Get It's Not Free But, It's Still Freshly Made & Worth Paying For!! Love Y'all All So Much ❤❤❤
I was born in South Texas and cut my teeth on Tex Mex cuisine. At 81/2, my family moved to Illinois and I was deprived of Mexican food for many years. There are states that sell Mexican food, many sell their version of Mexican food. For years I differentiated between Cal Mex & Tex Mex before the phrases came into common parlance. It’s really misleading to say that you can get Tex Mex in any state because I’ve lived and traveled in several where that’s just not true.
I did my undergrad in east TN. There is fine food there too. Some of the best country hams you've ever eaten come out of Madisonville. Trout from a mountain stream, ramps and eggs, biscuits with fresh made blackberry jam, sautéed fiddleheads, pawpaws.... There's also some lovely scenery. I do love those mountains. Dogwoods and rhododendrons in the spring...
This really is no shade on Texas. I've spent quite a bit of time there and enjoyed it. But. I do find it interesting that so many RUclips Brits visit Texas. I've traveled lots, both in the US and overseas, and I just have never heard anyone recommend Texas as a major tourist spot. California, New York, Florida - those seem to be the big tourist spots. But Beesley's - MAINE yes! It's truly the most beautiful place!
Chips and salsa are almost always free at Mexican restaurants 😊
Which makes you wonder why they bother with having desserts.
If you’re at a Mexican restaurant that doesn’t have complimentary chips and salsa, it’s either Michelin Star-rated, or they’re trying their best to not go under.

Taco 🌮 Bell 🔔 doesn't have free chips and salsa but it's not really Mexican food 😂❤😂

chips are complimentary, make sure you dip them in the salsa. Looks like she let the drink sit, the alcohol went to the bottom! LOL
Nothing better than fresh fried tortilla chips! The salsa sets the bar. If the salsa isn't good then nothing will taste good.

About to pour Shiner Bock myself. The chips are complimentary nearly everywhere in the US.
They are eating at the oldest restaurant in Texas. I've eaten there before. The scenery around where they're eating is absolutely beautiful
Chips and salsa are always complimentary in Texas at Tex Mex restaurants and always come before you even order your meal.
(Go Archie… Show them who’s the boss!)
water will increase the spice heat, milk or sour cream will mellow the taste.
And tequila will make you not care!
Please don't forget about my hometown Chicago we have the most amazing food and skyline
Definitely go on the river boat if you can. That's one of my favorite memories as a child growing up in Texas
I've been to San Antonio twice once when I was a teen in the 80s then I did my basic training at Lackland airforce base in the early 90's. I love it there and love the food.👍
Tex-Mex is great. The River Walk is a treat with all you can see on it. Now they need some Huevos rancheros for breakfast.
yes chips & salsa are complimentary at restaurants especially if they just automatically bring them out but there's some exceptions....yes you can get a daiquiri but margaritas are completely different....not enchiladas are not the same thing as soft tacos....they're flour tortillas stuffed with usually cheese or meat rolled up & covered in cheese & either red or green sauce which is flavorful but not spicy
Not saying Riverwalk restaurants are not good, they are, but they are very touristy. Their prices are for tourists spending money in SA.
The food is unbelievably delicious,
You guys have never had restaurant made chips, have you? Its completely different that the bag chips.
I coincidentally had Mexican food for dinner, in California. I love it. I saw this video on my recommended.
Nobody who has had to deal with the SLEEP DEPRIVATION of an infant will complain about vids being hit and miss... I feel your pain 😂
In the state of New Mexico (where I'm from), we always debate on whether to have red or green chile on our food. So any Mexican restaurant in NM, you can order it Christmas style. In this case, one enchalata will be covered in red while the other will be covered in green chile.
Chips and salsa are complimentary. Some places give you boty red and green salsa. Queso (cheese) you pay for.
Most give you several levels of salsa HEAT.
Love chicken fajitas they even sell fajitas at some grocery stores just to make at Home.
All Mexican restaurants give chips and salsa complimentary as you wait for your meal . I am born and raised here in San Antonio Texas and take my wife to Rita's often for drinks on the river walk.
San antonio river walk is unbelievable at christmas.
Oh most definite,y. I haven't seen a Tex-Mex restaurant anywhere that doesn't do Strawberry Daiquiris.
What they're eating is super common in any decent Mexican restaurant. I have a spot near my girlfriend's that we always go to in Gaithersburg, MD.
Yep The Chips Are Free & The Salsa Dips!! Plus They Are Freshly Made!! Except For The Cheese Dip Which I Love ❤️ & Always Get It's Not Free But, It's Still Freshly Made & Worth Paying For!! Love Y'all All So Much ❤❤❤
Quesadillas taste great with sour cream and salsa (fyi)
I've never eaten at Rita's but Tex-Mex at a 'touristy' (San Antonio River Walk ) restaurant may not be the greatest.
I love The Menger Hotel in San Antonio. Its historic and right next to the Alamo and Riverwalk.
Isn't it haunted?
You can buy TexMex and Mexican food in any state.
You need to do Tennessee...I'm in East Tennessee but I would absolutely travel to Nashville or Knoxville/Gatlinburg to meet y'all!

"Is That Like Tacos?"
Actually, James, Enchiladas are closer to a Burrito than a Taco
Closer to a roll taco but soft.
Some restaurants in the U.S. let kids eat for free. :)
also public transportation everywhere lets kids travel for free. Can save you some bucks when going around town.
For reasons I don't fully understand, Texas seems to loom large in the imaginations of some folks from the UK and Europe.
We try to take all of our friends from out of town to the river walk and do the river cruise tour
Chips and salsa are complementary/free if You're ordering something.
I've never seen a little one yet that didn't love quesadillas.
chips and salsa are free
New Mexico has truly amazing Mexican food.
Don't make me laugh bro everyone knows Texas has the best Mexican food in the states
Fajitas are amazing! You’ll have to try some during your visit.
Come to Disneyland, I work there. Can make some magic for you guys
What are they going to do in san antonio after their brunch?
Lmao such a weird Place to go if youre traveling over seas
The margarita smooths out the spice from the salsa.
